Coming of Age Drama Friendship

Too focused on what her next meal would be, Tanya was watching her best friend's lips move, but was not able to hear what her best friend was saying over the growling of her stomach. The two friends had had it rough that year, that year was the year their friendship would really be tested. Tanya was an only child and her father was never in her life, he’d walked out on her and her mother when she was three. Tanya had basically raised herself, her mother had turned to an addict when her father left and she became a prostitute to help support her habit. Risa had come from a very strict household, her parents were very judgemental and did not approve of the many things Risa liked to do, the things she liked to wear, and even the music she listened to.

Like many young friendships, the two girls met in school in 3rd grade. The two were inseparable, stuck together like glue, as they got older they’d begun confiding in each other as much as telling the different stories of things that had gone on in their lives. The two girls had gone through a lot together over the years and got through it all together. Now, they were seniors in high school, Tanya’s mother’s addiction had only worsened over time, sometimes her mother wouldn’t even come home for weeks at a time. Tanya had worked two jobs to try to support herself so she’d have a place to stay, but it was hard. Risa’s mother passed away from cancer when she was 13, once her mother passed away her father became an alcoholic. Risa’s father became abusive, thoughts of running away had often crossed her mind, but she’d loved her father too much to leave him and let him kill himself slowly. The two friends often talked about going to another state and becoming successful business women. Until one day, Tanya had been woken up by a loud bang coming from her front door, still trying to rub her vision clear, she’d looked in the mirror across from her which revealed two large men covered in black clothing from head to toe carrying guns coming towards the room she was in. Tanya quickly slipped on slippers and grabbed her phone and managed to slip her tall and slim body out through a window nearby in her room before the men could even see her. She ran and ran, ran to the only place she knew to go, to Risa’s. Once she arrived to Risa’s house she caught her breath and knocked on the door, Risa opened the door and gestured for Tanya to come inside,

“Be quiet, he’s sleeping”. whispered Risa with the split on her lip that her father had left her. Tanya nodded her head as the two had started up the stairs to Risa’s room. As soon as they reached Risa’s room and closed the door a sharp exhale had released from Tanyas chapped lips. She sat on the bed and began crying as Risa comforted her, Tanya could hardly get any words out to explain what had happened and how scared she was before Risa said “Let’s leave the state.”

Tanya objected and stated reasons as to why they couldn’t, after a while of debating about it Tanya finally agreed, the two began planning how they would do it, whose money they’d use for what and what routes they’d take.
