Horror Mystery Thriller

Date of Incident: June 3rd, 2005

Case Number: 67

This account is one of the more recent cases. As I continue to investigate the high strangeness surrounding the town of Selene, I realize that many of these cases require some back story. I will lay out for you the events of what happened on June 3rd and then recall for you the history of this small junction in Selene.

The frightful events that occurred that day have all been relayed by Lissa Sanders:

"That afternoon, my husband and I had gotten lost on our way to Selene. Without knowing it we were just on the outskirts of town when we experienced something truly horrifying.

It occurred just off of Bringly Road. on the east side of the old train overpass. We were visiting my husband's parents, an elderly couple who had both called Selene their home all their lives. My husband was familiar with the many roads and highways that wound their way through the town. However, on this day, he seemed to lose all sense of direction once he made what he told me must have been a wrong turn. For the road he turned on was one he believes he had never driven on nor was aware existed. He turned onto the road devoid of being conscious of what he was doing. It was the sort of moment when one finds himself driving for a long period of time only to come to a sudden realization that you have not paid any attention to what you were doing or where you were going. He figured he had to have driven this way many times before, so he thought nothing of it when he felt a sense of foreignness that he rarely felt in Selene. After driving along this road for some time and seeing not a single soul he commented about the unease that he felt. An unease that I likewise shared.

In order to lighten the mood, he responded by saying, 'it must have been the gas station burrito I ate just an hour before.' We both nervously laughed. Then suddenly, we look up ahead and see a woman standing on the side of the road. She was wearing what seemed to be a night gown that was all white. She was standing stiffly with her body turned towards the road. As our car came into view of her she slowly raised her thumb up to signal for a ride.

As their car neared, my husband said he was going to stop to see if we could help her, but I quickly responded, 'no! Don’t stop!'

'What? Why would we not?', he asked.

'I do not know. I just, I just have a bad feeling about it.'

'I think we should at least ask her,' he said.

'No! Do not! Keep driving!' I insisted.

This caught him off guard because very rarely if ever would I contradict him and insist on an opposite outcome.

Taking my concerns into consideration, he kept on driving. As we drove past her, we both hesitantly looked at her to see how she responded. We both regretted doing that.

As we drove another mile we began arguing about something petty. He started to yell at me which he never did. Then all of a sudden, he takes a quick glance in his rear view mirror only to see the woman sitting in our back seat.

He yells and slams on his breaks.

He then turns to look in the back only to find it empty as it should be.

'What are you doing?' I asked.

'That woman, I… I just glanced and saw her sitting in our back seat.'

'What?', I said.

'I must just be a little on edge. Let’s keep going.'

We then continued on our way down the road. After driving for what seemed like a mile, another strange thing happened. Despite being unfamiliar with the road we had found ourselves on, I seemed to recognize a railing that I was certain we drove by. In fact, the reason I recognized it was because I thought that it was right where the lady was standing.

It seemed to me that my husband likewise noticed but before he could say anything, I asked, 'are we going in circles?'

I was wondering the same thing. But no, I have not made any turns. It must just be a similar spot.

We anxiously drove another mile down the road when we made our way around another bend to find ourselves not only driving towards the same spot as before, but standing on the side of the road once again was the woman. She was standing with her arm outstretched just as she was when we first saw her.

My husband slams on the brakes and the both of us stare with shocked faces towards the woman. Neither of us could find words to say. We must have sat there for a whole two minutes. We said nothing and stared without blinking. He then quickly throws the car in reverse, turns around, and drives in the other direction.

We make our way around one more bend until suddenly we find ourselves driving back towards the woman in the same direction as before.

'What do we do?', I asked.

'I don’t know,' he responds.

'Maybe we could at least see what she wants,' I said.

'Are you crazy? I don’t know what is going on but I most certainly know that that woman is only going to cause us harm.' he said in response.

'What are we going to do then?'

'I don't know.'

My husband decided to keep driving past her once again in hopes that their nightmare would end.

It did not.

Just like the times before, there she was standing and waiting for a passerby to pick her up.

After driving past the woman another handful of times, my husband decides to stop and talk to her. 'I guess there is not much harm that a small woman can do, right?' he said nervously to me.

'I guess you’re right,' I responded.

He slowly inches the car forward and rolls down the passenger side window and asks with a shaky voice, 'h-how may we help you?'

'I need to get to Raven Jct. please.'

It was likely because we were spooked but we both were shocked by the innocence of her voice. Like a child asking her parents for a bite to eat.

My husband then decided to unlock the doors and told her that we would be willing to take her to her destination.

She then slowly turned, made her way to the back door, opened it, and got in. My husband, on high alert, put the car in gear and drove forward ever so often looking in the back seat. We never said a word to her. The last thing I remember was when we approached the old overpass. I heard a loud crash and my husband yelling just before I blacked out."

Lissa Sanders was found along with her husband in a car that crashed into the concrete wall of the overpass. Her husband was dead by the time the paramedics arrived.

The officer who visited Lissa in the hospital had relayed to her that there was in fact no woman in the car or around the scene of the crash. I have done extensive research and only came across one case that may be connected to this woman in white.

Nearly thirty years ago a young woman was walking along Bringly Road all by herself. Why she was by herself and why she was walking in that direction, no one knows. At some point she was picked up by a truck coming towards her direction. She asked for a ride and the driver quickly obliged. However, when the driver reached the overpass he suddenly stopped. He turned towards the woman and quickly gagged her and bound her. He got out of his truck and carrying Margarate, he climbed to the top of the overpass. He walked to where he could stand just above his truck. He then dropped the woman off the overpass and she landed flat on his truck. She died on impact. The man then walked himself all the way back to town and turned himself in at the police station. He confessed to everything but never gave a motive. He would later die in prison by suicide, exactly one year after he killed her.

One detail I left out of Lissa’s story was that their car windshield was completely shattered in such a way that a head on crash would not cause. It was as if something or someone had landed flat on their windshield from above.

The hitchhiker lived near Raven Jct. Why these things happen, I have yet to find an answer, but I hope these accounts and my investigations will prove in time to string together the high strangeness of Selene, NE.

That was creepy! It would be interesting to know how many cars have passed on this street before this couple.
Sounds like an interesting case.

Very well done - and super creepy - certainly leaves a lot to the imagination. I want more! I steered clear of this prompt because it seemed a bit daunting - you wrote this like a pro! Concise, with just the right amount of suspicion and chills. You nailed it! Welcome to Reedsy - KUDOs!
