We all have goals in life. Each one of us wants to achieve something, whether great or small, at some point in our lives. We have deep-seated hopes and dreams for the future and a burning desire to accomplish some great feats. It's stitched into the very fabric of our society, woven into the core of who we are, deep down inside. It's emblazoned in our DNA, genetically pre-dispositioned, not just for mere survival, but also with a yearning passion to thrive. The hardest part of acheiveing your goal is trying to set it as a priority, its difficult finding time for it.
If you want to succeed, you need to set goals. Without goals you lack focus and direction. Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life's direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding. Think about it: having a million dollars in the bank is only proof of success if one of your goals is to amass riches. If your goal is to practice acts of charity, then keeping the money for yourself is suddenly contrary to how you would define success.
To accomplish your goals, however, you need to know how to set them. You can't simply say, "I want" and expect it to happen. Goal setting is a process that starts with careful consideration of what you want to achieve, and ends with a lot of hard work to actually do it. In between, there are some very well-defined steps that transcend the specifics of each goal. Knowing these steps will allow you to formulate goals that you can accomplish.
My freind Matthew always had the dream of arranging a fundraising event for the needy. He was inspired by his great grandfather, a philantrophist who contributed most of his wealth to those who needed it. Matthew has volunteered in many fundraising and charity events, helping thousands of people that were in need. Every time we met, he'd always tell me about his dream of organizing his very own event and how excited he would be to do it, so I thought I'd try and help him out as a freind.
Matthew is currently in college studying Architecture, and he takes his education quite seriously. After joining college, me and Matthew rarely get to see each other, and thats mainly because Matthew is a bookworm, and when he isnt studying, he's working at his uncles store. Matthew rarely gets time these days to volunteer for charity events, but recently, after he got his long break, me and him planned to set up a food bank in a nearby area also referred to as the "slums"
Althought we are at the very end of the year, I wanted to help him accomplish this goal by the end of this year.
We decided that we would'nt waste time and immediately got to planning. We first called our freinds to help us get the necessary essentials that the needy would require, after we arranged everything that was needed for the food bank, we headed to the slums the next morning. It was around 15 of us that volunteered for this food bank, we delivered the essential packages to the needy.
After that he arranged a really big event, which featured popular figures around the area, Matthew came up with an idea of an event where everyone would be able to take part of. It started off as just 10 memebers and eventually grew to 100+, and the best part about this event is tha it never ends! Matthew made a system in which the event woukd take place every week. But it wasnt easy making the event, he started off by negotiating with many nearby restaurants and businesses where many people would come to, setting up booths that displayed and presented the idea. After 1 month of negotiating and setting up booths, his idea finally worked out.
The first event took place a week later, and surprisingly, it attracted quite a crowd. He sucessfully managed to raise and give out 1000 dollars worth of food to the needy. Matthew was now quite known for his generosity, but he still wanted to go big. For his next event, he arranged for well-known figures in the area to participate for the event, he got them to feature on the poster and also the other big promotions that he had planned. The second event was even better than the first one, this time attracting an even larger crowd.
The event keeps getting better by the week, as matthew has now started his very own charity organization.
Today, Matthew is very proud of what he has done for the community, even though I am writing this stroy about him, here is his say "grew my direct audience marginally to between 15–20k, although the indirect reach through partners and collaborations is probably much higher. Either way, I’m not concerned with this metric anymore. It seems much more important to create quality content for my existing audience than to worry about new people joining it. So that’s what I’m doing. It will grow organically on its own. My job is to add value and make a positive impact on people’s lives."
It was something that was really self worth, and it made me very thankful for whatever i have today. The best part of this whole event was seeing the smile on those faces, it expressed alot of happiness. The most important part was thag Matthew finally got what he always dreamt of, just as the year ended.
Goal setting is much more than simply saying you want something to happen. Unless you clearly define exactly what you want and understand why you want it the first place, your odds of success are considerably reduced. By following the Five Golden Rules of Goal Setting you can set goals with confidence and enjoy the satisfaction that comes along with knowing you achieved what you set out to do.
So, what will you decide to accomplish today?
