Fantasy Inspirational Drama

Green walls, packed bookshelves, tapestries with mystical symbols hanging from the ceilings, dimmed lighting, and plush floor seats lining the baseboards, this was the space you were engulfed in at Moon Passages. Angela had been living in Denver, Colorado for the past six years reading palms, tarot cards, and giving spiritual visions at special request (private one-on-one session only, of course). Her storefront, Moon Passages, was located on a popular tourist street, so business had flourished quickly. She classified her life as pretty wonderful since she recently bought a house with her slightly older boyfriend, Nick, who was known in the local area for owning the best hot yoga studios. Nick complemented Angela well, his muscular build, brown well kept hair, smooth face with an ambitious smile. Also for the first time in her life she wasn’t wondering where her next meal would come from or if she’ll make her rent payment on time. When Angela turned twenty-one, she moved here seeking a fresh start to make something of her life, and one day on her way to the supermarket she noticed a woman in the park with a sign that read “I’ll tell you where it begins and ends, for a couple presidential friends $$$.” The woman was dressed in long colorful robes, her hair was wrapped up with several layers of scintillating scarfs, and she had quite a striking appearance for someone who was obviously scamming people, in Angela’s opinion. Angela never believed these sort of people were actually psychic, she figured they were just giving gullible people hope, who wore their struggles and successes like a billboard sign. Besides, with social media these days you can learn everything about a person in less than five minutes. At that moment Angela realized exactly what she could do to get by in this new town. She ran home and got out her computer and learned everything she could on all things psychics, she put together an outfit with the clothes she owned that resembled the woman she saw in the park and made her way to the strip mall. Once she arrived she found an antiques store that was being run by an eighty-five year old vet that was eager to talk to anyone that would listen to his old war stories. After just a few minutes of talking with him, he was convinced and allowed her to set up an area in the store to begin her business. Flash forward six months and Angela had hustled her way to her own building space, employees that would gather information on people through Instagram and Facebook before Angela would meet with them, and a few NDAs she wrote up herself thanks to Youtube law, for all her employees. Angela was living her best life until one day she was making her breakfast and she started to daydream very vividly. This had never happened to her, one moment she was cracking an egg and the next she was in an office with Nick and a woman she’d never seen before. They were talking pretty intimately and intensely, so she attempted to move closer to hear. As she leaned forward it was like someone hit a zoom button because she was then so close to this face she could fog his glasses. Nick started to inform the woman how much Angela was making at her store and that he could convince Angela to give him ownership under his yoga studios. The woman laughed with a sort of sly smirk and then started to kiss Nick profusely. The zoom out button must have been pushed because with a quick blink Angela was back in her kitchen with egg yolk soaking through her sock. Angela went her entire work day on autopilot thinking about this strange vision, and things became really weird when she saw this mystery woman walking past her studio window. Angela gathered her things quickly and started to follow the woman, they went a few blocks and she found herself outside of one of Nick’s studios. Her intuition told her to head to the back window for a direct view of his office, oddly enough his window was open for clear sound just like her dream. And there they both were, playing out the scene she saw that morning. Angela’s breath quickening, her heart beating faster with each step she took away from the building, she couldn’t believe she really had a vision and even worse was her boyfriend really plotting to steal everything she built and give it to another woman? As she wandered around town, she found herself drifting into another one of these “visions,” this time she was sitting in a room she’d never seen before, papers in stacks all around the floor filled to the ceiling, a mirror that almost appeared to be moving like water, and the woman in the park she had seen six years prior. She was making herbal tea and called for Angela to come stand with her. “Your life has alway been in your own control, you’ve just allowed your fear to lead you,” said the woman as she turned and smiled at Angela in a way that made her heart feel lighter. Within a second Angela found herself back on the streets of her town looking at her reflection through a salon window. Coincidentally enough, she could see the woman as well! At first she couldn’t tell if her mind was playing tricks on her or if the woman was really there. As Angela quickly turned herself around, she could see the woman standing in the park in the distance, Angela dashed across the busy city road, rushing and bumping into people as she struggled to get to her, as if the moment may be fleeting. As she stumbled up to the table, Angela very much startled the woman, “I need your help, I’ve lost my way, and you are the one who helps me”, Angela shouted to the woman. The woman, including the other people in the park, stared at Angela pecurly, while one small child grasped her mother’s hand tightly. Angela didn’t seem to care about any of this, all she knew is she wasn’t leaving there without some answers. Politely the woman pulled out a chair at her table for Angela and kindly introduced herself, “Nice to finally meet you Angela, my name is Kinthala, but you can call me Kin.” Angela couldn’t help but wrinkle her brow at such an odd name but quickly absolved the look because she didn’t want to offend maybe the only person that could help her, and then it hit her, “Wait, how do you know my name?” Kin smiled lightly, “By your appearance you seem to have a more urgent matter, what brings you here today.” Angela began to tell Kin everything that had happened to her throughout the day, what brought her to Denver, and her falsified career she’d built, Kin gave Angela a feeling of ease she hadn’t felt in a long time. Even if Angela didn’t think Kin was a real psychic, being able to talk with someone authentically made Angela feel a sense of relief. Kin immediately started to pack up her things and instructed Angela to follow her to her car. As they drove for a little while Angela noticed them pulling up to a library, they entered and Kin took Angela to a restricted area Kin told her she had access to, through her employment there. As they entered the room Angela instantly felt the familiarity from her vision, “this was where I was when I saw you!” Kin smiled and said enthusiastically, “I know I saw you coming.” Kin offered Angela a seat and began to tell her about her own story and how she gained her psychic abilities. Angela was surprised to hear that Kin’s experience was a sort of warning of her intuition as well. As the time was getting later, Angela decided to call it a night, Kin advised her to allow things to play out as they will and allow the visions to merely work as a guide for her reactions. Now that Angela knows Nick’s plan she can decide to look at this as an opportunity to live a true life, give him the business and get out of the relationship. Angela thanked Kin for everything and told her she would definitely need her help in the future. So they agreed to meet every Saturday in the park, so Kin could give Angela lessons on controlling when the visions came. As Angela was leaving she just had one more question for Kin, “Did you see all this happening to me, when I saw you in the park six year ago?” Kin smirked and responded, “It looks like your Lyft is here.”

Hi Marquita, I'm leaving this comment as part of the Reedsy Critique Circle, I hope you are participating as well. First off, a technical issue. Not sure why, but your story is all one giant paragraph. I know you didn't mean to do this, but be careful about where you cut and paste from. I very much enjoyed the story! You squeezed a lot of calendar time into short story, and it worked. However, you don't need to say, "Flash forward six months...", as a reader it feels more technical and less prosy. "Six months later..." will do. Speaking ...
