The Alone Part
Suzanne Marsh
The spherical shaped object hovered over the desert then made its descent onto the desert floor. The creatures in the object took on human form before exciting the craft. The leader of their group; Mihcel spoke:
“Our mission here is to convince earthlings we come in peace but with a warning, they must
find better sources of energy, their carbons are killing our planet, as it will kill theirs.”
There are three of us, we will each go into one of their large cities, Brinter, you will go to
Las Vegas, you will stay in touch with me at all times. Henttie, you will go to Los
Angeles and I will go to New York City. These are the biggest offenders to our planet.
We must keep in contact at all times, we have what earthlings call five years, in that
time, we must stop all the carbons from entering our planet's atmosphere. One last thing
before we leave, do not expose yourselves to anyone, it is not our desire to scare them.”
Mihcel decided it would be more prudent to change his name to Michael, he also needed a surname, the others had already chosen theirs. Brinter, changed his name to Bart Mandarin, like the orange. Henttie, being a female being chose Megan, Meg or Meggie for short her last name Castle. Mike thought about the last name he had chosen, Mack. They would meet again at this spot in five years, Mike could only hope they would accomplish what they needed to in such a short time. He also knew that Zandiff their leader would not tolerate their making their presences known until the correct time.
Mike arrived in New York City, he had never seen such a dirty city, he wondered if all humans lived like that. The houses were so close together not like home where space capsules house their forms until they were desired for something to use for labor or mind bending. ‘Nothing is perfect, but this place is terrible. The smell from exhaust fumes nearly killed him until he became used to it. He found a small apartment to rent, in some place the earthlings kept calling Brooklyn. He began to notice the opposite sex, one in particular, caught his attention. She was an earthling, with huge brown eyes, a smile that melted his heart. He wanted very much to meet her, but he a mission to complete, then return back to his planet. He knew years were comparable to micromoments, he would do the equations once he was settled in. He waited every afternoon on the corner of fifty first street for the beauty. He found her walking toward a brownstone a block from his own. He decided that night to visit her in her dreams. In the interim, he contacted Brinter and Henttie. Brinter spoke softly into his transmitter, which was located in his rather pointed ears:
“Are you there Brin? What are the conditions in Las Vegas?”
Brinter wasn’t sure exactly how to answer the question since he had just arrived:
“I found a small I guess house is the translation. I am going to seek employment at a casino.
These earthlings are horrible. They have smoke coming out of their machines, and out of their
noses and mouths. I tried to put one out, I suppose that was not a very intelligent thing
to do. He punched me in the nose and moved on. How is New York City Mi?”
“Brin, to be truthful it is a awful as where you are. You would think earthlings would be
more careful with their environment, sooner or later we must make our presences known
to them. I think we should gather as much information as possible then transmit it Zandiff.
Last to report was Henttie:
“MI, why did you send me to this place? Moving vehicles on the ground, a big cloud over
the city. Los Angelos is not the place we would wish to live at least I would not.”
“Henttie, it is not your job to decide where anyone resides, it is your job to send information
to Zandiff about conditions there.”
“Conditions, it is dirty, it is smelly, earthlings are odd at best at worst, I saw an earthling today
with rings in his nose, his ears, his hair was purple, red and green. If that is not strange I have
no idea what is.”
Mike noticed it had become dark, it was time for him to find the girl and settle in her mind. He wanted to see what type of dream sequence she experienced for her time to rest. Mike made himself invisible, then waited for the girl to go to bed. He had to get into her mind, maybe she would aid him in understand these earthlings, he was not ever sure they were worth saving at this point. She opened a door with all sorts of odd apparel, took one out, laid it on a chair. She then put something on her face that made it white. Then she put water on her face. Mike had never seen anything like that, he continued to watch. She laid down on the supposed was some sort of rest table. She fell asleep instantly. Mike, mind bended into her cerebrum. He waited patiently, rapidly she began to vision, a warmer climate, a nice garden with flowers, Mike decided to aid her as she dreamed. He knew he could put thoughts into earthlings' minds, which was what he did. His voice melodic inside her head:
“Come with me to a world of beauty, away from this place. Gardens with flowers, beauty with
dirt. Water, so clean you can see the bottom.”
She moaned and turned over; it was not as easy as Mike had thought. He tried again:
“We will go someplace where there is no odors, no pain, just beauty.”
She moaned again:
“Yes, yes I will go with you, but I must be back by Sunday.”
Mike sighed the thought: ‘what is sunday?” He sent the report to Zandiff. Zandiff explained to Mike that this Sunday business was a day of the week. He explained the increments of time such as days, weeks, months and years. Mike decided it was almost time for him to return to his planet. He tried once more with the girl as she continued to sleep:
“Come, fly with me be my companion. Leave this place of pain and sorrow.”
She awoke with a start to find Mike hovering over her head:
“Who are you and where am I?”
Mike smiled indulgently as he replied:
“I am an alien, I come from the planet Mira, it is many light years from here.”
“Oh fine, I knew I drank too much, what are you a little green man?”
“Well, I have a green undertone, would you like to see it?”
“I think you better leave before I call the police.”
“What are those?” He said with a twinkle in his eye.
“They will put you in jail for breaking into my apartment.”
“But I did not break in, I simply came into your mind.”
“Oh fine, then show me what you look like.”
“Well, all right if you insist.”
Mike, turned into a small white being, with large eyes, and a green tinge. The girl sat staring, then ran across the hall to her friend's apartment. All she could utter was:
“We’re not alone.”
