Fiction Thriller

Act I

Keyboard clacking filled Data Comm Group’s dim rooms. Ethan Reeves hunched over multiple screens, his hazel eyes darting between financial data streams. The lines of code blurred as he squinted, trying to make sense of the suspicious patterns emerging.

A burst of energy shattered his concentration as Zoe Chang exploded into the room, her vibrant blue hair a whirlwind around her face. “Guys, you need to see this!” she exclaimed, her words tumbling out in a rush.

Ethan tensed. “What’ve you got?”

Zoe’s fingers flew across her tablet as she pulled up a series of ordinary stock photos on the primary display. “A user called ‘SasBono57’ uploaded these to Shutterstock and Getty Images. My pattern recognition software flagged some weird anomalies.”

Ethan’s brow furrowed as he studied the images. “SasBono57? Doesn’t ring any bells.”

Marcus Williams rolled his chair over, his calm demeanor a stark contrast to Zoe’s frenetic energy. His fingers traced invisible patterns on the screen as he leaned in, thick-rimmed glasses reflecting the light. Suddenly, his eyes widened. “There’s a hidden message here. Conventional steganography is cleverly hidden within image metadata.

Zoe bounced on her heels, her multiple ear piercings catching the light. “What’s it say?”

“Find something that sees beyond the spectrum,” Marcus read aloud, his deep voice tinged with curiosity.

The room grew silent as the implications settled. Ethan paced the floor, running his hands through his dark, wavy hair. His mind raced, trying to make connections. “Beyond the spectrum? What could that mean?”

Zoe rapid-fired theories, each more outlandish than the last. “Alien technology? Secret government projects? Oh! Maybe it’s about seeing ghosts!”

Ethan shook his head, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth despite the tension. “Let’s stay grounded, Zoe. We need facts, not science fiction.”

Marcus tuned out their banter, his fingers attacking his keyboard as he delved into research on unconventional visual perception methods. Ethan watched him work, admiring the older man’s methodical approach.

“I’ll try to trace the stock accounts,” Zoe announced, her focus shifting as she blitzed her keyboard with renewed vigor. “Ethan, can you help me cut through these anonymizing layers?”

Ethan nodded, pulling up a chair beside her. For hours, they worked in tandem, navigating through a labyrinth of digital misdirection. Ethan’s strained eyes burned, but he pushed on, driven by the thrill of the chase.

As the sky outside darkened, Marcus’ voice cut through the concentrated silence. “Tetrachromacy,” he breathed, excitement creeping into his usually steady tone.

Ethan glanced over, curiosity piqued. “Tetra-what now?”

“Tetrachromacy,” Marcus repeated, swiveling his chair to face them. “It’s a genetic condition where some women can see a fourth color spectrum. What if the hidden data in these images can only be perceived by a tetrachromat?”

Zoe’s eyes lit up, her fatigue forgotten. “That would explain why it’s undetectable by normal means!”

Energized by this new lead, they scrambled to test the theory. Ethan’s fingers flew across the keyboard, calibrating their high-end IR and UV detection equipment. Hours ticked by as they ran the suspicious images through every test they could devise.

Frustration mounted as each attempt yielded nothing beyond the original steganographic message. Ethan slammed his fist on the desk, the sharp pain a physical manifestation of his growing irritation. “We need an actual tetrachromat to confirm this.”

Zoe chewed her lip, a habit Ethan recognized as her ‘thinking face.’ “But how do we find one? It’s not exactly a common condition.”

A slow smile spread across Ethan’s face as an idea took shape. “We make them come to us. Zoe, how fast can you spread some online puzzles?”

They worked relentlessly over the next few days. Ethan designed a series of fiendishly difficult puzzles incorporating subtle color challenges in the near-UV and near-IR ranges. His mind raced with possibilities, each puzzle more intricate than the last.

Zoe put her social engineering skills to work, spreading the puzzles across various platforms and forums. Her ability to adapt her approach for each audience never ceased to impress Ethan.

Meanwhile, Marcus developed specialized image editing software capable of encoding messages in specific wavelength ranges invisible to both normal human vision and standard equipment. Ethan watched in awe as Marcus’ fingers danced across the keyboard, lines of code flowing like poetry.

Using Marcus’ software, they created their test images, embedding them within the puzzles. Ethan insisted on adding a specific message: “If you can read this, you’ve won! Call 503-680-7817 or email winner@dcg.net.”

Days passed without a successful solve. Ethan found himself obsessively refining the puzzles, pushing the boundaries of what was possible. Dark circles formed under his eyes as he worked through the nights, fueled by a mixture of caffeine and determination.

Zoe expanded their distribution network, her usual exuberance tempered by the growing tension. Even Marcus’ calm demeanor showed cracks as the pressure mounted.

Late one night, as they were about to call it quits, their secure line rang. The shrill sound cut through the heavy silence of the room. Ethan’s heart raced as he answered, putting it on speaker.

“Hello?” An enthusiastic, slightly rambling voice came through. “Is this the puzzle people? Oh, fiddlesticks, I hope I got the right number. You see, I solved your puzzle, and let me tell you, it was a doozy!”

Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. He exchanged a look with Zoe and Marcus, their eyes wide with anticipation. “Yes, you’ve reached the right place. You read the number?”

“Oh yes! I’m Millie, by the way. Millie Farnsworth. I’m a librarian in Boise, and puzzles are my hobby. But this one was special. There were these colors, you see, colors I don’t think most people can see. And they gave me this number to call!”

The team exchanged stunned looks. Zoe mouthed, “It worked!” while Marcus quickly scribbled notes. Ethan’s heart raced, realizing the implications of what Millie had just confirmed?

“Millie,” Ethan said carefully, struggling to keep his voice steady, “you’ve done something extraordinary. The fact that you could see that hidden number proves you have a unique ability.”

Act II

Millie Farnsworth clutched her puzzle book, her whimsical cardigan out of place against the sleek building. She steeled herself. Just another puzzle to solve.

Taking a deep breath, she entered, her eyes widening at the high-tech interior. Her slight limp became more pronounced as she navigated the unfamiliar terrain, clutching her puzzle book for comfort.

“Welcome, Millie!” Ethan’s voice rang out, startling her. She turned to see the lean, intense man approach, his hazel eyes flickering with a mix of excitement and caution.

“Oh! Hello, thank you. Quite the setup you have here. Reminds me of that sci-fi novel I read last week about-” Millie caught herself, realizing she was rambling. “Sorry, I tend to go on tangents.”

Ethan’s rare smile appeared. “No worries. I hope your flight was comfortable and the hotel suite meets your needs. We appreciate you taking this leave of absence on such short notice.”

Millie nodded, overwhelmed by how quickly everything had happened. “Yes, thank you. It’s all very generous. I’m just eager to help however I can.”

“Excellent. Your expertise is invaluable to us,” Ethan replied. “Now, let me introduce you to the team leaders. Each team leader has a small group of specialists under them, including our decryption experts.”

As they walked, Millie’s gaze darted around, taking in the array of screens and unfamiliar equipment. A petite Asian woman with vibrant blue hair bounded up to them, her multiple ear piercings catching the light.

“I’m Zoe! So glad you’re here. Your puzzle-solving skills are amazing!” Zoe’s enthusiasm was infectious, and Millie relaxed slightly.

“Now, now, Zoe. Let’s not overwhelm our guest,” a calm voice interjected, “I’m Marcus. Welcome aboard.”

Despite their warm welcome, Millie couldn’t shake the feeling of being a fish out of water. She fiddled with the edges of her puzzle book, seeking comfort in its familiar presence.

Ethan guided her to a large screen displaying what appeared to be ordinary stock photos. “Millie, we need your unique perspective on these images.”

Millie leaned in, her bright green eyes narrowing in concentration. Suddenly, she gasped. Patterns and colors, invisible to the others, danced across her vision. “Oh my! It’s like a hidden tapestry woven into the image. There are swirls of indigo where the sky should be, and threads of copper running through the grass!”

Emboldened by their interest, Millie attempted to decipher the hidden data. Her brow furrowed in concentration, but after several minutes, frustration set in. “Oh, fiddlesticks!” she muttered under her breath. “I can see it clear as day, but it’s just... gibberish. I’m sorry, I can’t make any sense of it.”

Ethan’s eyes widened in realization. “It’s encrypted. I should have expected as much.” He turned to Millie, his voice reassuring. “This is still incredibly valuable, Millie. Just describe what you see, and we’ll work on breaking it into plain text.”

Marcus calmly explained encryption. Millie’s analytical mind swiftly grasped the concept. “Like a cryptogram,” she mused. “The colors are just the outer layer.”

The team set to work decoding the encrypted messages, with Millie providing detailed descriptions of the patterns she observed. Her unique perspective led to several breakthroughs, each one boosting her confidence.

Millie flagged the incoming encrypted message, promptly routing it to Sara, one of the decryption specialists on duty. As they uncovered more information, Ethan abruptly straightened up, his eyes fixed on the screen. “Hold on,” he said, his voice tense. “I’ve seen this signature before.”

Zoe leaned in, frowning. “You’re right. It’s... oh, no!”

“What is it?” Millie sensed the room’s atmosphere shift.

Marcus turned to her, his expression grim. “It’s the Global Economic Forum. They’re behind this.”

Millie’s eyes grew wide. “But they’re supposed to be the good guys.” Her naivety about large-scale conspiracies became apparent as she struggled to reconcile this revelation with her worldview.

During a brainstorming session, Millie’s vast knowledge from years of reading random facts proved surprisingly useful. “You know, this reminds me of a historical cipher I read about. The key hid in plain sight, much like these images.”

Their perception of Millie shifted. They saw her as more than just a visual aid, valuing her intellectual contributions as well.

Ethan’s fingers flew across the keyboard, inputting the new parameters based on Millie’s insight. The room fell silent as lines of decrypted text filled the screen.

Zoe gasped unexpectedly. “Oh no,” she whispered, echoing her earlier reaction, but with even more gravity.

“What now?” Millie asked, sensing another shift in the room’s atmosphere.

Marcus leaned in, his expression darkening as he scanned the data. “They’re planning to flood every major financial network with false data simultaneously,” he said, his voice tight. “Stock prices, economic forecasts, bank statements - all manipulated.”

Ethan swore under his breath. “It would cause panic, runs on banks, market crashes... we’re looking at a potential global economic meltdown.”

Millie’s mind reeled as the implications sank in. “But why? What could they possibly gain from this chaos?”

“That’s what we need to figure out,” Zoe said grimly, her gaze locked on the screen. “And fast. We need to know when they’re planning to strike.”

The team exchanged worried glances, the weight of their discovery settling heavily on their shoulders. They raced against time to prevent a catastrophe that could affect millions of lives.

Zoe’s voice, filled with excitement, permeated the room. “I’ve intercepted communications mentioning a Dr. Schwab!”

Millie perked up. “Dr. Dieter Schwab? I remember reading about him in an economics book. He’s quite influential in financial circles.”

As the team delved deeper into the consortium’s plan, explaining the potential global consequences, Millie felt overwhelmed. The weight of the situation pressed down on her, and she retreated to a quiet corner. Her fingers instinctively filled in a Sudoku puzzle as she tried to calm her racing thoughts.

Ethan noticed her distress and approached. “How’re you holding up, Millie?”

She looked up, her eyes clouded with worry. “It’s all so big, so important. I’m just a librarian from Boise. What am I doing here?”

Ethan crouched beside her, his voice gentle. “You’re solving the biggest puzzle of your life, Millie. And you’re the one who can see all the pieces.”

His words resonated with her, helping her see her place in the team more clearly. She nodded, a determined glint replacing the uncertainty in her eyes.

As they returned to work, Millie’s gaze flicked between the encrypted data and her close to finished Sudoku. Suddenly, she sat up straight. “Just a minute! There’s a pattern here, similar to how Sudoku grids interlock!”

Her excitement was palpable as she gestured animatedly, explaining her reasoning. The team gathered around, their faces a mix of confusion and growing realization as Millie’s breakthrough led them to discover the consortium’s timeline.

An intense debate erupted about how to proceed. Millie hesitated to speak, intimidated by the high stakes. The discussion swirled around her, a tempest of technical terms and ethical dilemmas.

“We should alert the authorities immediately,” Zoe argued.

Marcus shook his head. “That could cause widespread panic. We need to be strategic.”

As the debate reached a fever pitch, Millie’s soft voice cut through the chaos. “What if we approach this like a library catalog system?”

The room fell silent, all eyes turning to her. Millie’s cheeks flushed, but she pressed on. “In a library, we organize information so it’s accessible but not overwhelming. We could release the information strategically, guiding the right people to the right ‘books’, so to speak.”

Her unique perspective shifted the conversation, ultimately shaping the team’s final decision.

As they implemented their plan, Millie worked alongside Zoe, applying her librarian’s organizational skills to manage the influx of information. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, creating a complex system of tags and cross-references.

A mix of terror and exhilaration coursed through her veins. Despite being uncomfortable, she embraced the thrilling challenge. As she worked, Millie caught her reflection in a darkened screen. The woman staring back at her - with determination in her eyes and a slight smile on her lips - seemed both familiar and strange.

For the first time in years, Millie experienced renewed life, her mind and skills pushed to their limits. She was no longer just a small-town librarian; she was a crucial part of a team working to save the global economy. And despite the enormity of the task ahead, Millie Farnsworth was ready to rise to the challenge.

Act III

Millie’s mind reeled from the revelation about the GEF. The team swiftly regrouped, determination evident in their eyes. They had to act fast to prevent economic chaos.

“We need to shut them down,” Ethan said, his voice cutting through the tension. However, time is limited for a comprehensive solution.

Zoe leaned forward. “What’s the play, then?”

Ethan’s fingers flew across the keyboard. “We’re going to use their own system against them. Those stock photos they’re using to transmit data? We’ll upload our own with a surprise.”

He turned to Marcus. “Fetch package Delta-7 from the library.”

Marcus nodded, moving to a secured terminal.

“A virus?” Millie guessed.

“More like a digital time bomb,” Marcus explained, returning with a flash drive. “When they open our photos, it’ll trigger a fake system update, regardless of their particular operating system. Their computers will be stuck in an endless loop.”

Ethan added, “It won’t stop all of them, but it’ll cripple their operation.”

The team worked diligently, uploading the infected stock photos. Millie’s role was to continue decoding incoming messages.

"Millie, keep an eye on those incoming encrypted images," Zoe instructed. "Alert the decryption team immediately when new ones arrive, and have them report back as soon as they grasp the situation."

Hours passed. Financial markets showed signs of manipulation, but were far less than feared.

“It worked,” Zoe breathed, relief clear.

Ethan leaned back, satisfaction mixed with concern. “For now. But we need a permanent solution.”

Millie nodded, realizing their fight wasn’t over. Despite being wounded, the GEF was not defeated.

“What’s our next move?” she asked, surprising herself with her eagerness.

Marcus beamed. “First, we rest. Then we plan our long-term strategy.”

As the adrenaline faded, Millie felt a mix of exhaustion and emotions she couldn’t quite name. The events of the past few days had shown her a world she never knew existed, and she struggled to reconcile it with her life as a librarian.

Ethan approached her, his expression softening. “You did great today, Millie. Your skills were crucial to our success.”

She turned red at the praise. “Thanks. I never imagined my puzzle-solving abilities would be used like this.”

“That’s often how it goes,” Zoe chimed in. “The skills we think are just hobbies turn out to be our greatest strengths.”

As the team wound down, Ethan cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention. “We’ve bought ourselves time, but the GEF won’t stay down for long. We need a permanent solution.” His gaze settled on Millie. “And for that, we’re going to need everyone’s help.”

Millie felt a rush of anticipation as Ethan continued, “Millie, we’ve seen what you can do. Your skills, your quick thinking—they’re exactly what we need. We’d like you to join our team permanently. Help us find cyber criminals and put a stop to them in their tracks.”

She looked around at her colleagues’ faces—Zoe’s encouraging smile, Marcus’ approving nod. This was more than a job offer; it was a calling.

“I accept,” Millie said, her voice filled doggedly. “Whatever it takes to finish what we’ve started.”

The team welcomed her with smiles and congratulations. As they began discussing their next steps, Millie knew she had found her true purpose. The life of a children’s librarian was behind her now, replaced by the challenge of unraveling a global conspiracy and protecting the world from digital threats.

The fight against the GEF was far from over, but Millie felt ready to face whatever came next.

Nicely done! I like your take on the prompt with colors only certain people can read. I also love that a librarian became a key player to stopping this global catastrophe, as I'm married to one.
