Romance LGBTQ+ Fantasy

Kai never expected to see Rowan ever again.

Yet here he was, somewhere in Japan and staring through the cafe window, trying to figure out if he was imagining things or not.

Watching as the man he had watched die some seventy odd years ago laughed with what looked like two teenagers.

The door to the café opened as someone walked out, and Kai was able to hear the last part of their conversation.

"You really need to get better at Japanese, Rowan. Our business is going to suffer if you don't."

That was all the confirmation Kai needed. Rowan was alive, but how? And how did he still look the same? Not that he had any room to talk, but for normal mortals...unless...

No. Rowan had to be human. Kai had thought...

Red clouded his vision as he stormed into the shop, so many years of emotions bubbling up at once.

"What in the actual fuck, Rowan?!" Three heads snapped in his direction, and Kai could see the flicker of emotions pass through Rowan's face. First confusion, then shock, then confusion again, and finally panic.

"I...Stupid Knight?" Stupid Knight? Did he seriously not even remember his name? Rage boiled up even more as he strode over, slamming his hands into the counter and bringing his face close to the dirty blonde's.

"You're supposed to be dead!" Rowan jumped, placing a finger to his lips and looking around frantically.

"Hey hey hey, whoa! Let's calm down, okay?"

"Calm down?! Calm down?! Did you seriously just tell me to calm down?! How in the actual hell am I supposed to calm down when I just found someone who I was convinced died seventy years ago?!"

"I'm doing it aren't I?" The whisper was hissed out, and Rowan's blue eyes became hard. "Looks like both of us have a lot of explaining to do, huh Kai?" Kai blinks, some of his anger fading. So...Rowan did remember his name. No, no time for sentimental thoughts. Shaking his head, he glares again.

"I think one of us has more explaining than the other, considering the fact I watched you...I watched you die!" Kai throws his hands up in frustration, trying not to let any tears fall from his eyes. "Right after you swore you would be safe, the next day I turned around to find you walking into a minefield and then BOOM! No more Rowan! Care to explain that?!" Rowan opens his mouth, but just as he does, another voice speaks up.

"Geez Rowan. You could've at least told the guy you fake your death to keep under the radar." Kai turns to see one of the teenagers, recalling seeing two of them before and feeling a rush of embarrassment at the fact he had forgotten they were there. The young male smirks, as if he knew Kai had forgotten them and leans over the counter. "Poor guy looks like he worried about you all this time. What was it he said? Seventy years ago?"

"Hey! Isn't that when we met you for the first time?" The other teen pops out from behind Rowan, a grin on her face as she pulls a lollipop from her mouth with a 'pop'. "We almost ate you! Good times!"

"Guys, please don't egg the situation on." Rowan sighs, his fingers pinching his nose as he squeezes his eyes shut. "We're supposed to be keeping a low profile, remember? Acting like humans?" Realization hit to the fact that Rowan telling him to calm down earlier was to protect his cover, but along with it came another flash of anger.

"Oh, so you meet them the same time you meet me, but they get to know you're not human and I don't." Rowan opens his eyes, glaring.

"Yes. Because, like Rei said, they were going to eat me. It was an emergency, unlike with you who I thought was a human. Care to explain why you look the same as you did, or are you going to keep being mad at me for a secret you also kept?" Silence followed, before the male teenager started laughing.

"Oh my god, you two are so stupid! How can you look at each other and not know the other is some type of supernatural?" Rowan snorts, a playful grin on his face as he rolls his eyes.

"Because you and your sister knew I was one until I panicked and told you the truth." He sputters, standing from the counter and crossing his arms as he glares at Rowan.

"I was young, I have an excuse! Back then even you had been around for a long time, you should've known!"

"Rowan is naïve though. He fell into our trap at that time too, remember?"

"Oh, right. Sorry Rowan, guess you're just stupid." Kai could tell the somber look on the male's face was fake as he patted Rowan's shoulder, causing the older one to huff.

"Shut it. Anyway," his eyes turn to Kai again, and he could read several questions in them, "calmed down?" There was a pause before Kai slowly nodded, and Rowan smiled. "Good. You burst in here kind of like a storm, and while I like storms, they aren't exactly ideal in a café." Snickering at himself, Rowan leans over the counter and hesitantly places a hand on Kai's. "It's...good to see you again. I didn't think I would." Kai bites the inside of his cheek and nods.

"Yeah...it's good to see you too. I still don't understand though, how-"

"You never found my body right? Just things that would hint I died?" Another pause as Kai thought about it before he looked at Rowan in shock.

"You planned it that well?" Rowan shrugs, straightening up again and sighing as he stares out the window.

"When you've been doing it as long as I have, you get really good at it." The girl (Rei, was it?) places a hand on Rowan's back, and he looks at her with a small smile before he sighs and ruffles her hair, causing her to make a sound of protest. "Anyway, I saw in the papers back in the US that you made quite the name for yourself. Still acted like a Knight even after the most accident prone was gone huh?" Kai snickers, shrugging as he smirks.

"Old habits die hard. When you're raised as one, it's hard not to be one."

"Nice as it is to see you too hesitantly flirting with each other," Rowan squeaks, his face turning bright red and Kai can't help but snicker, "we still have a business to run, and it's about to be rush time." At the younger males words, Rowan turns to look at the clock and makes a noise of panic.

"I still have to get the cupcakes ready!" And just like that, he was gone, leaving Kai alone with the two teenagers. Or...teenage look-alikes, after all he knew now they were at least seventy years old. Rei smiles at him, spinning the lollipop in her fingers.

"So, Mr. Perfect Storm, I doubt you'll be able to talk to Rowan anymore today here. Buuuuut~!" She pulls out a notepad and a pen from her apron, leaning on the counter and brushing some of her dark hair back as she scribbles something down, ripping the page out and handing it to Kai. Reading it, he found an address and a time, and looked at her with a raised eyebrow. She simply winks as she puts the lollipop back into her mouth, turning and walking towards the back with a bounce in her step.

"That's Rowan's apartment. Show up or don't, either way it'll be entertaining for me." The male teenager smirks, almost an exact copy of the girl (twins maybe?) but a bit more sinister. He waves to Kai before leaning on the counter next to the register, opening a magazine and flipping through it boredly. Kai takes that as his sign to leave, sighing as he walks out the door.

Looking at the slip of paper again, he feels too many emotions run through his mind at once, but he shakes them off, walking towards another store front.

Might as well find something to wear.
