"Did you see what Linda from Accounting did?" one commuter spoke to another. I stared at the floor of the train and clutched my suitcase between my legs. I could feel the warm thighs of the person sitting next to me touching that of mine. Many commuters walked out of the train to the bustling streets of New York and some came in.""Marymount train station, Please alight if needed." a monotone voice came from the speakers of the train. Okay, this is my stop I thought to myself as I squeezed between the sea of people. I swiftly got off the train and walked towards the exit. Looking at the mountains of people walking all around the place, talking on their phone, or with friends, I immediately wished I was back at my grandma's farm and not in this mess of adults, teens and children. I need to calm down and get to my apartment and I can at least finish my university homework by myself, I thought to reassure myself.
So it is this dilapidated building is my house for approximately 3 years, great, I thought to myself. I took a deep breath and pushed open the doors of the building. The cracked walls coupled with buckets on the floor catching water from the ceiling really made it look like a scene from a stereotypical horror movie."What do you want, little lady?" the woman at the front counter asked me in an annoyed tone." I...I...need the keys to...room 209...I live here, "I said, scared of the lady." Here you go, now runoff." the lady replied, handing me the keys to my room. Without hesitation, I grabbed the room keys and scurried away towards the lift. I pressed the lift button for the lift to come down and meanwhile I looked around the lift lobby, realising that I was the only one in the lobby. I was interrupted by the ding of the lift. I walked into the lift and was about to close the lift door when I saw hands hold open the door and come in, it was a couple. They pressed the button to go to the level they needed and I followed suit.
"That secret hill near Benjamin Train Station is such a peaceful area!" the male said
"That one with the single tree on top?" the female asked
"Ya, that's a perfect place to study or have a picnic! We should go there for a date next month," the male person suggested. Before hearing the next part of their conversation, I had already left the lift and went to my apartment. A secret hill?A secluded area?A peaceful area? To study at? It will be just like at my Grandma's, I thought to myself. I dashed towards my room, opened the door and threw my backpack on the floor as if it was trash and went to the train station again.
Benjamin Train Station, right? I thought to myself. I was standing when I reached Temaj Train Station thus when I saw an empty seat with no one on it, I jumped at the opportunity and sat in the seat but I soon realised that was a mistake. Looking at the surroundings, I saw two men sitting next to me. The big burly man sitting next to me looked like a gangster while the skinny man which was also sitting next to me looked harmless. Instinctively, I gravitated towards the skinny man as I didn't want to get into any trouble so early into my stay in New York. Upon reaching Benji Train station, I felt a tugging on my purse. I turned to my left and saw the skinny man trying to snatch my purse."Stop trying to steal my purse!"I exclaimed in a high pitch. My shrill voice attracted all of the passengers in the cart. Some of them stepped up in a bid to stop the purse snatcher. Realising he was caught, he let go of the purse and ran out of the train empty-handed. Some of the commuters asked if I wanted to report this to the police but I didn't want to trouble the police with this small matter so I just decided to go on with my day." Benjamin Train Station, please alight if needed" a familiar monotone voice suddenly spoke through speakers in the train Wait, why am I near, oh right I'm supposed to go to that secluded hill, I thought in my head, still dazed from what happened.
After alighting at Benjamin Train station, I searched for the hill the couple was talking about. Why would there be a hill in this urbanized part of New York, I thought to myself. While doing a full 360 to locate the hill, I managed to find it. I sprinted towards the hill to see if the couple was actually telling the truth. Upon reaching the top of the hill, I sat leaning against the tree and looked out to the view. What kind of rubbish is this? This isn't an outstanding view! I thought to myself. The factories releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the cars also releasing greenhouse gases, skyscrapers blocking the view of the clear blue sky, the air felt very moist, it didn't felt secluded at all because of the blaring of the car horns! I thought to myself. This is the final straw! I hate living here! Why would this place be a calming area? Why are people now not earning money properly and stealing people's bags even more now? Even though this place is closer to my university than my Grandma's farm, I don't mind walking 2 hours to get there! I thought to myself
I walked back to my apartment because I didn't want anything bad to happen to me on the train anymore. I grabbed my only bag in the apartment and passed the keys to the landlord, grinning from ear to ear, thankful that I chose not to live in an apartment, more importantly thankful that I chose to move away from New York to Heaven on Earth, even though I have to wake up 2 to 3 hours earlier to get to University. I grabbed my handphone out from my bag and dialled my grandma told my grandma the good news "You're coming back to my farm? That's great, honey!"My grandma said joyfully since my grandfather kicked the bucket when I was still a young child and no one lives with my grandma.
I bought some trail mix to prepare to make the long trek all the way to my grandma's farm which was 20 miles away. After two laborious days, I finally reached the place I call home. I stepped into the farmhouse beside the big lake and smelled the familiar scent of home lingered in the air, usually buttercream cookies and dog food."Honey, is that you?"A sweet voice came from upstairs."Yes, Grandma, I'm home!"I said excitedly, knowing it was my grandmother, my caretaker since my parents stay in Nea Zealand."Oh Hi dear!" my grandma said."Hi, Grandma"I exclaimed, rushing to my grandmother going in for a big hug. While hugging me she told me to go take a bath because apparently, I smelled like "city people", whatever that means. I walked up the stairs to take a long bath and was greeted by the sight of Archie, my beloved dog. His woofs were telling me that he was happy to meet me. I went to the bathroom and took a bath. After taking my bath, I threw together a cool, comfortable fit and wore it. I picked up my homework bag and guided Archie to the hill in front of the flower field. I could tell Archie knew what we were going to do.
Archie and I sat down, I was leaning the only tree on top of the hill and Archie sat on the mat that I laid out just now. I took out my homework books and started doing my homework. After finishing my homework, Archie and I still sat there in my home without criminals, without pollution and without noise
Staring out at the rows of flowers, the pond full of life, the trees beside the flower field as if placed perfectly, with Archie, without criminals, without pollution and without noise. I felt home, I felt myself. I wasn't living in a city, but maybe I'll live there one day if the world becomes like my home, natural and peaceful.
Natural and peaceful.
