Fiction Friendship Romance

Alyssa gripped onto the wine glass, listening to the classical musical of the restaurant and looking out to the cityscape. The smell of the dishes wafted through the air, and a bead of sweat trickled down her cheek.

She gnawed on her lip, looking down and glancing at her watch every few minutes. She could feel the waitress’s eyes burning through her, full of fascination. A man slipped into the chair in front of her, she slammed the wine glass down onto the table, and she pointed to her watch and raised her eyebrow.

“You’re late.” She said, venom clear in her tone. The man in front of her was dressed lazily, not at all what she expected when her parents set her up to this horrible date.

He cleared his throat, shifting around uncomfortably. The pungent smell of garlic from the next table burned his nose, and he looked the woman straight in the eye. She fluttered her eyelashes, leaning forward in curiosity. “So, what is your reason, Mr. Evans? Based on your attire, I guess you were on an adventure?”

He breathed in and pushed his hair back, leaning forward in turn. “My name is Eugene, not Evans.”

Alyssa’s ears turned a shade of red as she coughed. “No, I’m sure it said Evans…”

“I’m not Evans. He skipped on you and sent me here to reject you.” He said, letting out the breath he was holding.

She went silent for a minute as everything blurred out, the sounds of the classical band and the chattering of the rich around her. She stood up and straightened her dress. Alyssa was about to run off until Evans stood up with her. “In my defence he told me he was meeting a high school stalker who was forcing him here. You don’t look like a crazy stalker.”

Alyssa pursed her lips and raised a brow as he grabbed her hand, darting his eyes around the room before staring straight at her. “So, erm… Want to go and do this date? You’re pretty and all…”

She turned and smiled slightly. “I’ll pay the tab, and you can take me out somewhere in return.”

He gave her a smile back as they left the restaurant, she felt out of place in her dress next to his casual wear but slowly shook it off. It is not her fault he did not know how to dress to impress. She slithered her arm around his and clicked her tongue. “So, Mr. Eugene, where are you going to take me?”

“To have the best night of your life, Mrs. Rich Girl.” He responded.

She blinked in curiosity before laughing out. “And how do you know I’m rich?”

He motioned towards her glittery dress and she chuckled softly, she suddenly gasped as he pulled her through the street harshly. It was hard to keep up to his long strides with her heels, but soon they halted at a small building at the end of the street that did not match all the beautifully decorated scenery around them.

He took her inside and she looked at him, confusion on her face. In front of them were a bunch of old-fashioned arcade games, and a shady man smoking a cigar by the counter. He tucked her hair behind her ears and took her to the first game.

As she jiggled the sticks and watched the flashing screen in front of her, she began getting more immersed in the games. The games only plebs played, quoting her father. He wondered how he’d react knowing that she was on a date with a ‘pleb’.

Eugene came from behind her and clasped his hands against hers, causing her to gasp. As they played together, she started choking out laughs of ecstasy. A slight smile tugged onto Eugene’s face seeing the uptight lady so happy as he continued showing her around the vibrant room full of wonders that she had never experienced before.

As they walked out in euphoria as she turned to him. She made a motion with two fingers near her ear. Eugene pulled out his phone, she snatched it from his fingers and tapped around, inputting her number and giving it back. He looked at her and rubbed the back of his neck. “Alyssa, that’s your name…”

She paused before a grin plagued her face. “You don’t know my name, yet you took me out to this wonderful day?”

“I mean, I didn’t want you to be upset over your date ditching you…” He spoke.

“It was arranged, I never was upset. But thank you for your kind heart, because now I know who you are completely. Next week, let us meet at the restaurant again. I’ll take you out.” Alyssa kissed his cheek.

She took out her phone and dialed her driver, before turning to him. “You should call an uber, if my chauffer sees me out with you, he’ll report to my father immediately.”

He nodded, flustered and embarrassed at the idea of a lady taking him out.

Eugene left the street and waited for his uber to come, his cheeks turning red as he placed his hand on the place she pecked. “She was beautiful.” He uttered.

The next day, Evans lounged on his couch as he yawned. “So, did you turn her down?”

“You really missed a catch Evans. She was wonderful,” He gushed “her eyes! And she was so pretty when she smiled.”

“Eh? My friends told me she was a chubby pig, being the daughter of a posh man.” He drawled.

Eugene snorted to himself, shoving through his fridge. “Well, I got to thank your friends. She’s taking me out next week.”

“Oh?” Evans sat up.

“She’s rich, beautiful and entertaining. You missed the perfect lady Evans, and now she’s mine.” He took his phone out of his pocket, looking at her contact again.

Alyssa with a heart on the end, Alyssa. He came into that date expecting to reject a stalker and met a beautiful maiden.
