“Did she say anything?”
“Nothing. She hasn’t said a word. We even tried to get hard on her but she didn’t break.”
“Let me give a try.”
“You sure you can make her tell the truth?”
“Let’s see.”
“Just don’t use force on her otherwise we will have to arrest you for beating a woman.”
Sebastian went into the interrogation room where Samanda was kept as she was under the guilt of killing two men, her own husband Victor and her neighbour Bruce.
“Hey Samanda. I am Sebastian Shaw. My colleagues call me double S or sometime sss…you know that rattling sound of a rattlesnake.”
“I did it. I killed my husband and our neighbour and I am not guilty about that. I demand death for myself.”
“I know you are not but I also know that you are hiding something. Usually murderers run away from the crime scene. Why surrender?”
“Because I had enough of that man,” Samanda screamed out tearing her shirt from the collar. There were deep marks around her neck running to the shoulder and everywhere below her body.
“You want to see more officer!” she screamed again but this time there was pain in her voice. Before she could do anything else Sarah rushed inside the interrogation cell and restrained her.
She was still trying to breakout. Sarah had to lay her head on the table and force it until she came under control. She cried a lot and then asked for water.
“You now know that I had been a victim of domestic violence. I had been, since the very beginning because of that man and his friend.”
“You could have asked for our help before taking such a major step. At least you should have thought about Bruce’s daughter. Because of you she is an orphan now. She has no one.”
“She was an orphan, Bruce had adopted her,” Samanda continued, “And regarding asking your help, I asked for your help but your officer didn’t take any action against it.”
Sebastian stared her for a while. He was confused that whether she was right or wrong in her place. He stood up after a while and silently left the cell.
“Who was that officer she was talking about?” Sebastian asked.
“Sir he was the in-charge before you and as she said he do was corrupted.” Shawn replied.
“A corrupted officer was ruining our image and you all just let it happen?” said Sebastian.
“We complained against him that’s why he got suspended and you were appointed.” Sarah replied.
“Well the marks on her body do confirms the statement she gave still she I doubt her reason for killing their neighbour,” Sebastian continued, “Keep on asking her.”
The police was thinking that they had solved a part of the case but still there was a lot which they were unaware about. Sebastian got a call from one of his officers who were investigating about Samanda’s husband’s background.
It was from Mark, who was investigating about the victim’ background. “Sir this Victor was really a twisted one.”
“Tell it clearly Mark, what you have found?” said Sebastian.
“Sir this Victor used to supply girls in hotels for his clients.”
“Sir basically he used to select those who were financially weak but their looks and body was good. They used to have a deal that Victor will pay them huge if they work for him.”
“Have you found the hotel where he used to arrange all this?”
“Sir basically there are three to four hotels where he used to supply girls but coincidentally they all belong to the same man.”
“Excellent get that person and bring him here. We will interrogate him here.”
“On my way sir.”
Now this was really a big clue in the case. Things started to become clear to Sebastian but before coming to any conclusion he wanted to be confirmed. Mark arrived at the Police Station with the owner of the hotels and their respective managers
.
Without any delay Sebastian directly said, “Does any one of you knew Victor Clark?”
No one replied but their faces said that they do. “I do not have much time. Either you say or we will make you say.”
One of them, after gathering some courage replied, “He was a regular guest in our hotel.” And he stopped.
“Go on, speak everything you know.” said Sebastian.
“Actually he and his partner used to bring us guest and we used to give them commission on that.”
“Partner, who?” said Sebastian.
“Bruce!”
“Didn’t you ever feel that whatever you were allowing in your hotels was illegal?” said Sebastian.
“This happens in almost every hotel. Everyone…”
“There is a difference in arranging such nights and being arranged for such nights. Isn’t it managers?” said Sebastian.
I don’t know why but it feels like that the owner also knew about it.” said Sebastian.
“Believe me sir I had no idea that my hotels were being used for such purposes.” said the Owner.
“I am giving you four, a second chance,” Sebastian pointed to the managers, “You tell me whether he was involved or not.” said Sebastian but no one replied, as Sebastian had expected.
“Look if you tell the truth you will get fired but you can get another job but if you don’t say you will be fired as well but I will make sure that you don’t get another job.”
All the managers again looked at each other and then looked at the owner who was not interested in having an eye-contact with anyone of them.
In the end one of the spoke, “Actually we were introduced to Victor Clark by our owner. He told us to always have an entire floor available for Victor.”
“Mark, take them in custody. Get their statements and you know what you have to do.” The managers knew what Sebastian meant, even asked for mercy but he didn’t pay any attention to them.
“This makes some sense but…I still can’t understand why she has to kill Bruce?” said Sebastian.
“What did you understand sir?” said Mark.
“As they said, Victor was in this semi-prostitute business. Either Samanda have tried to stop him or…”
“Or what sir?”
“Or he wanted Samanda to get into his business but she denied and that’s why he must have beaten her.”
“That means he wanted her to do so many times and she denied everytime.” said Mark.
“What kind of man he was?” Sebastian continued, “But why Bruce?”
“Maybe it was Bruce’s idea to use Samanda.” said Mark.
“Probably.”
Then Sarah came with another report which made Sebastian to think about the case once more.
“Sir Bruce’s daughter has given a statement. She told that her father and Victor were about to go on a vacation when Samanda came and tried to stop them and during that both of them got killed by her.”
“They might have planned to take her to some hotel where they may use her. Samanda already knew about them so she tried to stop them.” said Mark.
“But again why she tried to save Marina when she doesn’t care about her?” Sebastian continued, “I mean when I interrogated her she told that she doesn’t care if she had made someone an orphan again.”
“If you ask me sir, I think because of motherhood,” Sarah continued, “She might get attached with Marina when she heard that Victor and Bruce were going to use her to earn money.”
“She couldn’t be mother that’s why she thought of Marina as her own child.” said Sebastian.
“Her story is also very emotional sir. She lost her fertility after the death of her first child.” said Sarah.
“She had a child?” Mark asked.
“It died during birth.” said Sarah.
“Sir there is a nurse outside who wishes to meet you.” said Robert.
“Call her in.” Sebastian replied. Robert called her in as he had said she was a nurse. She was identical because she was still in her uniform. She was also carrying a file with her.
“Sir I am Rebecca Green. I am a nurse at Osmosis hospital. Actually today a lady officer came asking about Victor Clark. I had almost forgotten about that person but today when I heard his name again everything just rushed back again.”
“What do you know about him that you want to share?” Sebastian asked.
“Doctor must have informed your officer that Victor’s child died during birth but that’s not the truth.”
“What?” Sebastian got shocked, “You mean she was alive!”
“Yes sir. Actually Victor Clark asked the doctor to tell her wife that her child was born dead.”
“But why?” Sarah asked.
“Victor didn’t have money to pay for the operation and neither to run his family. He told that he had someone who wants a child and he will sell them his. The doctor wasn’t ready to this because selling a child is a crime but he begged a lot and after looking to his condition doctor agreed to make a report that his child was born dead.”
“So what happened to the child?” Sebastian asked, “Whom did he sell his child?”
“I don’t know sir. We handed her to him, after that we have no idea what he did with her.”
“She was girl!” Sarah said.
“Yes mam, Victor and Samanda had a girl child.”
Sebastian was again lost in his thoughts trying to connect everything to each other when he thought of a random theory made by him.
“Sarah from where did Bruce adopt Marina?” Sebastian asked.
“God’s Child Orphanage.”
“We need to go there. Sister you also come with us.”
They rushed to the orphanage and went to the Matrons and asked that when did they receive Marina. Matron told them that it was on 23rd August late night when they heard a baby’s cry. The nurse confirmed that on the same date Marina was born in the afternoon.
Everything was clear. Marina was Samanda’s daughter. Victor’s plan was to use Marina in her business but Samanda would have never let that happen so he used the doctors and left Marina in front of an orphanage from where Victor adopted her and waited until she grew up.
“That means Samanda knew that Marina was her daughter but why she called her own daughter an orphan during interrogation?”
“Because she had almost ended her life. Marina was an orphan and would become an orphan again if Samanda didn’t claim her. She may have thought that Marina may get a better family this time because her original family has been crumbled.”
“She did take a bold step. We have to do something. She has her hearing in court tomorrow. We can’t let her get punishment.” said Mark.
“We will Mark nut now I have a call to make.” said Sebastian and he took his mobile, went through the contact list and dialed a number.
“Yeah mom…Yeah I am fine…Yeah everything is alright…Just wanted to hear your voice…Yeah everything is fine just had case which made me listen to you voice.”
