Historical Fiction Fiction Suspense

A very odd stone building stood in front of my house. It looked as if it was built during the Victorian era! I entered and a saw all the furniture but a chest took my attention. I expected some diamonds or gems to be inside. I was about to open it when... BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. I jumped and saw myself standing over my bed. It was 7:00am and my bedside clock had triggered the alarm. I had been dreaming all this while. This was sheer bad luck! I was about to open that chest, who knew I would be rich but that did not happen. I was thinking that I might get another chance in reality but that time I was really frustrated and tried to break that clock! What a wicked thing! That clock stopped me from being rich! I then made a mental note to sell this “bad luck” alarm clock and buy a good one instead.

The day went pretty good. I came back home from school and while entering my room, the first thought that hit me was that stone building that I had dreamt this morning. Somewhere in the back of my brain, I felt that there must be a building like that from the Victorian era with that same chest but I did not back my instincts. I was cycling back home from my tuitions when I passed through the Royal colony. It was a string of old houses, bungalows and mansions which dated back to Napoleon’s era. It was a very picturesque location and a very ‘tourist flocking’ area. I have visited there many times. I decided to spend some time by riding around the colony, again the stone house thought came to my head, which normally doesn’t happen until I was totally sure about it yet I thought that I was dreaming it all up.

I was exiting the colony when something caught my eye, I polished my spectacles and when I was about to see what it was, a stone skidded near my cycle tyre, an angry man shouted “Hey you! Move out of here! You aren’t supposed to come here” I was about to reply when another stone came skidding and almost missed my ankle! I cycled out of the colony and went back home. I was back in dream land and I was standing in front of the same old house and this time a very old man holding a lighted torch came near me and said “Knave, I am John, I guardeth this house centuries ago in 1897. I has't cometh to bid thee yond this house hast a big f'rtune inside. if 't be true thee useth t c'rrectly, thee shall leadeth a most wondrous life and thee shall at each moment findeth yourself beside the po'r” (translation: Boy, I am John. I guard this house centuries ago in 1897. I have come to tell you that this house has a big fortune inside. if you use it correctly, you will lead a great life and you will always find yourself beside the poor.) I was astound! What a character! I knew a little bit of Victorian English by reading Shakespeare’s plays, so I understood what he told. He disappeared and gave me some time to look around the place, it looked very very similar. I tried to recall it but I couldn’t

This time when I woke up, I was totally determined that this house was there in reality and I would find it by either hook or crook! It was a Sunday, so I cycled to the grocery store and went past the Royal street when I suddenly recognised the place. I went in and parked my cycle near that place where I was attacked by that angry man. I looked out for that man and stood in front of that stone house! I tiptoed in to the house and I was awestruck! Every single furniture was there and even a calendar which had a picture of Queen Victoria and dated to 1897! I had this foolish idea of finding my birthday and as it turned out, 23 July 1897 was a Friday! What a coincidence!

I looked for the chest and hunted it al over the house when I thought of checking the 2nd floor. I climbed up the spiral staircase and Lo! The chest was right beside the bed! I could tell you that this house belonged to a very very very rich man. You would think about it too if you were in my place. The couches were gold plated and there was a silver plated sink! I went near the chest and tried opening it, I shall tell you here even the strongest person in world couldn’t open it. Then I could open it by pulling the lid from behind. I am not a strong boy but you know sometimes brains are enough to even defeat the strongest man. Gems fell out of the chest! It was shining so much that I literally went blind!

I recalled Mr. John’s words and thought about the good cause he told me about. I came up with many ideas ‘Charity? No, Poor people? No, Helping India? Yes.’ I thought. I quickly called up my parents and told them about the incident. My birthday finally arrived and a phone call came just when I just blew the birthday candle! It was from an officer of the Government of India! They were pleased for my contribution and rewarded me by giving 9% of the jewels I had given them! I didn’t want it but I was forced by them to accept it. A fantastic week passed by and I celebrated my birthday in style! Look here folks, you may think I dreamt everything but I can pinch myself to prove that I was awake after all. I would never have experienced this thrill and excitement if I wouldn’t have backed my instincts and who knows, one day your dreams will come in real life. That "bad alarm clock" was proved to be lucky after all!
