TW: physical abuse, violence
Entry one: Hello diary. My name is Randolph Correy and I have just received you as I turned eight years old. I wanted to fill you in on the basics of my life. I have a Mommy and a brother. My Daddy died when I was a baby in a car wreck. I never knew him but my older brother Matthew did. Yesterday Matthew took away all my cars and flushed them down the toilet, I hate him. I wish I had a nice brother
Entry two: Hello diary. Today we took Matthew to the hospital because he wouldn’t stop vomiting. It was super gross. On the way to the hospital Mommy looked super worried but I think Matthew is fine. He probably only is puking his guts out because he snuck into mommy's secret chocolate stash. The weird thing is that when Matthew told Mommy where he got the chocolate she turned white and ran super fast to the car. That's what Matthew gets for flushing my cars down the toilet three days ago
Entry seven: Hello diary. Today Matthew came home from the hospital. I heard the doctors tell Mommy that he has a weed in his tummy from the chocolate so I don’t know what that means. Maybe I can plant him into the garden and he can grow into a pretty flower. All I know is that I am never eating chocolate ever again because I don’t want a weed to grow in my stomach too.
Entry twenty two: Hello diary. Today Mommy went on a date with a man named Jeff. He seemed very nice when he was with Mommy but when she left he gave me a mean look and I didn’t like it. The worst part is that when I tried to tell Mommy how mean Jeff was to me she told me I was making it up. She is so mean!
Entry fifty five: Hello diary. Today I am so sad. I just turned nine and I went for dinner with Mommy and Jeff and Matthew. When they brought out my cake Matthew blew out my candles so I punched him. After I punched him Jeff took me to the bathroom to talk to me but as soon as we got there he punched me in the stomach really hard and lifted me up by my shirt
“If you tell anyone about this I will punch you again!” He said. I ran out of the bathroom crying and when Mommy asked what happened I had to lie to her and tell her that I fell so Jeff doesn’t hit me again. I hate Jeff and I wish that Mommy will break up with him
Entry seventy two: Hello diary. Today Mommy went out of town and left Matthew and I at home with Jeff. At night when I showed Jeff my math test he got so angry. I got a B and he started yelling about me and asking why not an A. He took off his belt and started whipping me with it and it really hurt. He hit me so hard on my back that I started to bleed. When Matthew heard me screaming he ran downstairs and jumped in front of me. “If you tell anyone about this I will kill your mother!” Jeff hollered. Matthew and I sat on the floor crying for the rest of the night. I wish Jeff would die
Entry one hundred and three: Hello diary. Today while Mom was at the store Jeff had to watch Matthew and I. Right after Mom left Jeff ran upstairs and came back down with the only picture we have left of Dad. He threw it on the ground, then took out the picture and lit it on fire. Matthew leaped at Jeff and tried to get the picture out of his hand but Jeff was too strong. Jeff threw Matthew on the floor and started punching him. When we heard the garage door open Jeff quickly picked up Matthew and threw him down the stairs and ran to wash Matthews blood off of his hands. “HELP” Jeff screamed “MATTHEW FELL DOWN THE STAIRS AND HIT HIS HEAD!”. My mom believed Jeff. She believed his story of how Matthew fell down the stairs and hit his head. Matthew was rushed to the hospital and in a couple hours pronounced dead. My mom believed that Matthew died because he fell down the stairs but I know the real reason. No matter how many times I told mom the truth she thought I was just grieving and needed somebody to blame. Jeff killed my brother and one day I will get revenge. For Matthew
Entry seven hundred and sixteen: Hello diary. Today I celebrated my eighteenth birthday. It was awesome. I got accepted to my dream college and my girlfriend Cara did too. Yesterday I got revenge for Matthew. Yesterday Mom and Jeff got into a fight. When he got home he threw his plate on the floor because his meat was too chewy and he made Mom clean. Then he started yelling at her and then hitting her. He started punching her and soon enough she fell to the ground, weak but still alive. I was not going to let Jeff take another person from me. I pounced on to him and put him into a headlock. When he was out of breath I let go and punched him so hard that I knocked him out cold. He was still alive though. I was not going to be as low as him. I called the police and Jeff was thrown into prison for everything he had done. I feel accomplished and my Mom promised me that if I know something is off she will believe me.

I thought that this was a great book. It showed maturity fro 8 to 18 and that a realistic relationship in a kids life that real kids have to go through. It gave a insider perspective of what kids really feel and go through behind their parents back or how their treated normally. They know its wrong but they are so scared and threatened and you cant really do anything in that situation if no one listens to you. I loved the idea that it was also passed down to his daughter to continue the ritual. A truly great book.
