Christian East Asian Fiction

Many people don't realized how fascinating is the world of cooking food. but at the same time many people also realize that cooking is an art called the culinary arts. Cooking has evolved into high end shows to win a prize hosted by experts in cooking who are called chefs. We didn't call our mothers to be a chef when she cooks for us but can we also call them experts in cooking? Of course, why not when they cooked many food specialties from main dish to desserts. There is a typical family in the Philippines particularly in the northernmost part the Ilokanos wherein members of their family have gone to other countries to find a job there and live there. Ricky and Urna has four children. Three of them are living abroad particularly in France, Italy and the United States. Ricky tilled his farm to raise his children while Urna tended their small pharmaceutical store. It is every Filipino parent's dream to send their children from kindergarten to university to support them until they finish their education. Boyet was the eldest among them and a male whose dream was to become a physician. Since he is the eldest his parents has all the resources to support him at the local university offering the Doctor of Medicine course. Boyet showed his exemplary educational achievements being a consistent first honor in his grade levels in the elementary and high school to be a valedictorian in the elementary and secondary school presented to him on his commencement exercises. He passed the entrance examinations at the university and automatically became a scholar being a valedictorian. He studied hard to maintain his scholarship so that his parents will not carry all the financial burden of this long course he has chosen. It takes eight years to become a doctor another year to take his board examination. On weekends he would go to the restaurant owned by his aunt. He learned some recipes like chicken adobo bistek (Filipino Steak ) Filipino Milkfish in Tamarind Broth. Her mother Urna is so happy that Boyet knows how to cook so he will not have any problem to feed himself where ever he goes. And it's true. After taking the Board Examination to become a licensed practitioner topping the results of the examination he is offered a scholarship to go to Italy to pursue his specialty on surgery. He specialize in organ transplants. While there he goes to eat in the restaurant and try the recipe at home like Florentine Butter Chicken, Italian Wedding Risotto, and Agnolotti del Plin. Meat filled agnolotti (with the pinch) using braised meat. The agnolotti are stuffed with pork, chicken, veal and vegetable filling with butter and cheese. He cooks rice the main staple in the Philippines a part of his main dish when he cooks. Maria is the second child of Ricky and Urna. She studied Nursing at the same university where Boyet took his medical course. Maria was also a consistent honor student like his brother. During her internship she is assigned to assist the doctors at the children's ward. She likes it there helping parents to feed their children. Mostly children are being fed with rice porridge. Maria volunteered to cook rice porridge and bring it to the hospital. Urna emphasizes to her children about the importance of cooking so her children know that food is the way to have a healthy body. Even though they have a drugstore she is not using much to her children to build up their immune system. The body can heal itself. After Maria has finished her Nursing course she assisted the doctors at the Pediatrics Department upon passing the Board Examination to become a licensed practitioner in Nursing. She is sent to the United States to join the hospital staff of the United States Navy Hospital. She met a Navy Captain and became engaged. Inside the army hospital the prepared food is hamburger. She misses her Filipino food of fresh vegetables and Asian fruits. How she wish to sip the Pork Sinigang (Pork Soup) and Chicken Tinola (Chicken Soup). Casseroles, are served like burrito casserole and chicken ala king casserole. No matter how good are the hamburgers and casseroles Maria really missed the Filipino native dishes. Norie is the third child of Ricky and Urna. She finished her studies as a teacher. Her major subject is Home Economics teaching children home cooking, food preservation like cooking jams, chutneys and pickles. With so many fruits around brought by the farmers in their farm she is able to cook and preserve the fruits. It is a big help for her not to have the ingredients when they need it during class demonstrations. Many tropical vegetables like long beans(sitaw) ampalaya leaves (bitter gourd leaves) camote tops squash flowers alucon katuday and bilunat leaves are rich in antioxidants as they are mostly fibers to clean the digestive organs. To be a teacher in the Philippines does not pay much. Norie left for France to be a caregiver which pay her more than double of what she is paid in the public school. The Philippines is the main source of labor export. From professionals to skillled trades. Norie can use her cooking being a Home Economics Teacher. She easily learns to cook the French recipes given to her like Chicken Cordon Bleu, Fetuccini Alfredo and other main dish and side dish French recipes. The youngest child of Ricky and Urna is Allie. Ricky and Urna hopes Allie will not leave them anymore. They asks her to take Pharmacy so she will be the one to take over as soon as Urna decides to retire. She has one year left to finish her pharmaceutical course when Maria announces she is going to have her wedding in the Philippines to marry his US Navy Captain who may adjust to the weather and food but Ricky and Urna assured that American food will be serve to him while in the Philippines.
