Adventure Contemporary Fiction

'When are they going to let me speak?' I sat there, dumbfounded, as my friend and my boss ganged up on me in the front seats of the car, (I was in the back), talking over me every time I said something, and not listening to a word.

Who did they think they were? Are they blatant woman - haters? Should I give up or keep trying. The chatter went on and I fell silent, frustrated.

I thought these people actually liked me. I guess I'm just a dumb 'woman', not worthy of paying any attention to by these elite 'men' who evidently had no part of being born from a woman, just landed here on their feet, and either that or their holy sacred mothers were immaculate. (And I was non-existent.).

Ok, time to get out of the car. I felt like just walking around the block. I was disillusioned, but wanted to pursue my own happiness and forget about this disrespect. I guess they had the right, I can't control them. It's rather rude, though, I thought. Sort of like torturing me or trying to get over or one - up me, or maybe they were defending themselves from me, yes that must be it. I was happy to finally come to an understandable conclusion, and trotted over to the doorway. Please, right this way, I said with a grin as we were led through the restaurant by a short blonde in heels 7 inches high. This was my goodbye dinner, I was going off to college but so far nobody seemed really very congratulatory at all.

My boss chose a table by the front window, and I agreed cheerfully. He had said he would treat but my friend also, (wanted to contribute.)

I had my own money just in case. Everything seemed to be going well when my ex-husband Jake came prancing in, from I thought he lived downstate, with a prostitute- looking girl hanging on his arm. He just glanced over then started laughing.

I had to go talk to God, so I got up and left to go outside for some air, using the excuse, I needed to find my phone charger (a mobile one). While outside, I paced back and forth in front of the building, steaming, hardly hyperventilating, but quite peeved. I almost wanted to say ,'Let's go somewhere else', but wanted to play it cool as possible.

The blonde was taking our orders, except I wasn't there, and they were explaining to her as I sat down, then they were like 'There you are,' and I sat down and ordered a salad and a soup. I scooted back in the chair, and peeked to my right and left. Oh my god, he was behind me , I was facing the window and his table was getting more people!

He was obviously rubbing it in my face that he was having a better time than me so I got up and threw my glass of water in his face. I didn't think about it, I just overreacted and paid for it. He got up and slammed me against the wall as the other restaurant patrons looked on.

'Listen I'm going to college and I'm going to be happy and I don't need you!' I screamed.

His girlfriend trotted in her heels to the bathroom. Saying she needed to 'freshen up' like she was some sort of Hollywood star. Huh.

I laughed and returned to my seat.

'Can I have a wine?' I looked at my boss, expectations high again. He just waved me away and returned to the oh, so engrossing conversation him and my friend, once just acquaintances, were having about whether a coffee bean is an actual bean or considered, a (fruit.=

Ugh. I looked over to the happy couple and decided to let them be. I couldn't really handle seeing him with another. My friend considered me his girl friend. I was like going along with it. I took his arm in mine, hooking it, and looked over. My ex happened to look up, saw us then pretended not to notice or care and was eating, though rather hurriedly and the server came with our meals and everyone enjoyed.

For one moment, then my boss popped the question; " Who was that."

"Oh, just someone I used to know."

"Please don't do that again. You're causing quite a scene. Please stay seated." He waved a motion that meant, stay there with his hand. My friend nodded and I supped my soup, looking up at my ex and then I started giggling. Is this a joke?

Omg look who was coming in, from the next state over. "Peg!" My sister came over and hugged me where we were sitting, and then got seated. She was with her friend she'd known since high school, Jane.

Anyone else? Oh my god why was it snowing. I thought it was June.

The music came on and I got up to go to the dance floor. My friend Justin came up and took my hand, spun me around then we did dome impromptu ballroom dancing then I sat back down, exhausted but refreshed.

Everyone seemed to be enlightened. And we partied. And we danced. I met the prostitute girlfriend in the bathroom and she seemed like a nice person. Actually me and her had some things in common.

Anyway, the next day I woke up in my car outside my friend Justin's house, at the wheel and do I simply backed out, and headed down the highway toward home. Actually I flew down the highway, but I got home and who was there, but my tall handsome ex with a bouquet of roses. Ha ha!

That's the end of the story. I have to write more words to complete the word count. If you excuse me, I'll just write conversationally, til I get the rest in. Thank you for reading my story, or for allowing the story, if it does get allowed, and I thank Reedsy for the great opportunities.
