Jackson walks through the park, wishing his mom would give this up and allow him skateboard with his friends- which he almost never does- ”Mom please.. I'll be back before you say my name” she gives him a stern look of disapproval and says ”Teenagers your age don't know what it feels like when walking through the park.”
” Of course we don't!” how could they when they had a life to live!
His mom refuses to listen to her only child and relishes her time with her son for hours on end!
His mom points at a blonde girl sitting on a park bench ” that's Joan, she's about your age” he groans..
They finally get home. Jackson runs straight to his room for a once in a year nap on a Saturday.
He moans ” I'm never walking that long again!”
The next day, they go on another walk while Jackson complains endlessly ” WHYYY!”
His mom kept silent. She always took him on walks, always.. there was a time he thought he could get used to taking these boring walks but NO!
They pass pretty Joan whose on her laptop.
” I need my freedom. I need it! Other moms don't trap their only bird in a cage telling it to walk all day!”
She glares at him coldly. ”Sorry mom”
Why won't she understand!
For crying out loud mom! I don't need permission from you!
Right there and then he decided to run to the skate park opposite this frequent outing park. He has no idea why, how needed to feed the fire . Skateboarding was his passion! He knew it! From his blood upwards!
Just one ride. Just one
He knew a guy that brought two skateboards! He could borrow one and do a trick ” Jackson!”his mom yelled out of the tip of her voice. He didn't answer.
He crossed the road without looking. In a blink,he tripped and half of him was crushed by a truck. All he could hear were screams, Joan calling the emergency lines ,an ambulance.. And his mom's sobs. He was hurt emotionally and physically . I don't wanna die yet. I'm still too young... please I don't wanna die! I'm sorry mom. I'm sorry I didn't listen.
He was drifting to sleep...
In immense pain he awoke. Panting, he looked around the hospital room. He saw a wheel chair by his side. His mom was asleep, her head on his hospital bed.” mom?” she jerked up looking tires and stressed.
”Jackson!” she was about to embrace him in a hug when she looked down at his blanket covered legs. Tears in her eyes, she whispers ” I'm so sorry..” Jackson stares at her in total confusion. He's too fatigued to ask questions. He tries moving his legs but they ache like a stab!” What happened?” his mom shakes her head. How long had he been in this hospital?
”What about school mom?”
”You've missed school a couple of weeks” sniffing, she stands.
He keeps his mouth agape” weeks?”
She nods. ”They needed to operate on..” she eyes the lower part of his body.
Not my legs. He shakes his head in misbelief and removes the blanket from his legs. ” My legs!” tears were on the verge of eruption”Mom..no more school.. No more skate boarding..No more walks in the park?”
”They gave you a wheel chair”
”It's my fault.. if I listened to you” relaxing in the bed, he closes his eyes.
”If I allowed you go”
”-you made the right choice not allowing me go. We were having mother-son bonding time.”
The doctors walk in to give him medication. He struggles a while, wanting to ask more questions then takes them willingly.
He knew he was going to be the talk of the school,he was going to get bullied.
He'd never walk again.. he didn't even care about skateboarding as much just the walking...
The next day he gathers his thoughts.
He didn't realize how much he enjoyed walking till now.
He wished he could rewind time, wished he could listen, wished his favorite limbs weren't gone.
His legs were like a long lost friend and he was mourning them.
The truck wasn't at fault,it was him.
His first time of using the wheel chair was frustrating. He couldn't do anything himself, could he?
He couldn't bath himself! Ugh!
Two months after the incident they go home . Julia notices her son is depressed and misses the old Jackson. One day she asks ” wanna go to the park?”
”What's the use?”he replies lifeless in his bed room.
Later on she starts home schooling him because of his fear of school gossips.
She decides to buy prosthetics for her son. He'll be very delighted at it! she thought.
A few months later his mom tells him they were going to the park and nothing was stopping them. How could she? What was she thinking! He thought. There was no use doing anything..There was no use going to the park! He wanted to shout at his mom, that would do no good..
He was dragged to the park by his mother. She left him there in a wheel chair a while and came back with a white long bag. She knelt down in front of him. Smiling she brought out the thing in the bag.
His expression was dull and now exciting.
He cried as she put it on his short legs.
When they were on ,he struggled to stand.
He was standing in the park with his mom! His thighs ached a little but who cared!
He smiled at his mom and she smiled back.. ”I love you mom”
”I love you more and your legs ”she held his hand and they took it one step at a time.
Five months no adrenaline! Look at me now world! I'm bursting with it! Even better! I'm walking!
They reached Joan's bench and she became excited at his new legs even though they'd never met. She cared or had a crush.. Whatevs!..
He was back in school with the new girl, Joan being protected by him.. he was walking.
