A dreadful silence remained in the room as we ate our dinner. My dad sat beside me, it's really hard for that to happen. We don't eat together often.
"Andrew," My dad called.
"Yes? "
"Have you decided or not? "
It's the inevitable fate that I have been evading for too long.
"No father." My voice was firm.
"Take your time son, take your time."
After dinner, I went into my room and locked myself in.
Bzzzzz....bzzzzz...
"Hello?"
"Hey, Andrew! What are you up to?" Claire asked?
"Oh hey Claire, nothing much. You can say I am 're-evaluating'."
"So you are still unsure if mafia is something you want to be a part of?"
"Yeah."
"Believe me, you were born for it."
"Yeah, I guess."
"Alright, I know what will cheer you up!"
"Oh really?"
"Yup, I am coming to your room right now!"
"Wait, what?"
With that, she disconnected the call. Within a few minutes, she was at my door. I grumbled as I opened the door.
As soon as the door opened she wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug. At first, I considered pulling away, but her soothing warmth convinced me otherwise.
"To be honest, your idea isn't half bad," I said.
"I knew you would like it." She replied cheerfully.
I don't know who pulled first but we separated. She closed the door behind her and sat next to me on the bed. She gazed into my eyes and I almost kissed her. When she realized that I wasn't going to kiss her, she just smooched my cheek. Her soft lips left a lingering sensation on my cheek.
"Yeah, I know," She said before I could have responded. "You still are sceptical about marriage in the same group, about marrying me."
"I am not sceptical about marrying you, I just don't want to marry someone because my dad wants me to," I said.
"You don't need to be nice to me, I am not very eager to marry you either."
Well, that stung. I don't know why but it did. Am I crushing on her? No. No. Don't let your thoughts run wild. Focus.
"Yeah, whatever." I eventually mumbled.
"Your thoughts don't align with your words, do you know that?" She said.
"Oh really? So now you can read thoughts?"
"No, but I have studied psychology, so I can read people."
"So what can you read about me?" I asked, not even sure if I want to hear what she will say.
"You are running, not from responsibilities, not from people, from yourself," She sighed. "You need to clear up your thoughts and act upon what you want."
"I..." I tried to speak but no words came out.
"I'll see you tomorrow." She said and left my room.
I kept turning in my bed all night long, thinking about what she said. I always admired the wise part of her that always guides me in distress.
The next day she was a little thrown off. Perhaps a little down after our encounter last night, it's not like I blame her. In my acts against the 'marry in your group' idea of dad, I have been completely rejecting her in the process. I have to make sure to let her know that I don't dislike her.
"What was that for?" Claire let out a shocked cry as I smooched her cheek gently. " We are in the middle of a street! Are you out of your mind?"
"No, probably for the first time I am in my mind!"
"What does that even mean?"
Alright, that sounded cool in my head. Not so cool out of my mouth.
"I thought about what you said last night, and I just realised that I have not been acting the way I should."
"Whatever, if this is another 'I am not against you I am against my dad' speech I don't want to hear it."
With that, I pressed my lips on her. Hesitant at first, she slowly started kissing me back. The moment felt like an eternity, after we pulled back none of us looked the other in eyes.
" I just want you to know if I choose to marry you, it won't be because dad wants me, it would be because I want to."
She turned around and ran straight into the school building without saying a word or looking back.
I entered the school feeling a little funny from the events that preceded. I saw a large crowd surrounding the notice board. I pushed my way through and my blood went cold.
"The heir to Bluerose and Red Sharks are in our school!"
What! How did anyone manage to get this information? And wait I am the heir to the Bluerose but Red Sharks, they are sworn enemy, their heir is also in our school!
I have to talk to Claire, if there is anyone I can talk to now it would be her.
I started to search for her everywhere I could, suddenly someone grabbed me from behind and dragged me into the girl's bathroom.
"What the-"
It was Ray, I saw her in my maths class.
"Ray! What are you doing?"
"Keep your voice down, idiot!"
"What are you doing?" I repeated.
"I know who you are, and you should know who I am." She said.
She started removing her shirt.
"Oh wait we are students! Don't you think we should not be doing this?"
"Stop imagining things, we are not about to have sex." Her words were firm. I was relieved to hear that, for a moment. Before she showed me the tattoo on her shoulder.
"You are one of the sharks!"
"Yeah no shit, Einstein. I am the heir. Just like you."
A chill rolled down my back as I realised that she knew my secret.
"How? How did you know?"
"Remember the time, when we were at the pool party?"
At first, the memory was a blur, but then it came back into focus, last year at a pool party my secret was almost blown.
"Yeah."
"I saw the tattoo on your back when you fainted in my arms."
"But I was wearing my t-shirt!"
"I always suspected you, it was the best opportunity to confirm. I took you inside and removed your clothes. I thought the Bluerose members had tattoos on their thighs, why do you have yours on your back?"
"Wait for a second, you mean you removed my pants?"
"Obviously. No feelings attached."
"God you are such a-"
"Don't even think of calling me the b-word."
My face flushed red as I imagine myself laying on the bed and her removing my clothes.
"You have a nice body though." She said, blushing crazily.
"Thanks, I guess," I replied calmly, remember she's the enemy.
"I am not your enemy," She said. " Our dads have called a temporary truce till we are over with this."
"Wait, over with what?"
"Don't tell me that you don't know about the anonymous third group trying to bring us down."
I seriously don't, but yeah no need to tell her this.
"Oh yeah right."
"You are a very bad actor."
"Ok, I don't."
"Well, my dad told me to work with you, we need to get every piece of information on the third group. We are going in the streets tonight, don't be a sissy and be present on time."
"Wait!"
Before I could stop her she vanished out of the bathroom and into the crowd. I secretly made my way out and into my class.
A third group? Gotta talk to Claire, she must know something about this!
Bzzzz....bzzzzz
"Hello?"
"Andrew, I have got a mission for you."
"Let me guess, work with Ray of the sharks to find out what this third group is up to?"
"Well looks like you met Ray already, but don't get too close to her. Truce or not, she's still a shark."
"Alright, I will be careful."
I don't even know how to shoot properly, I don't know how I am going to fare in this.
Ding!
'Meet on the rooftop.'
I make my way to the rooftop to find Claire and Scarlet talking.
"Hey girls!"
"Took you long enough." Scarlet.
"Hi Scarlet, long time no see."
"Hey morons."
We turned around to see Ray walking up to us.
"Andrew, meet Ray."
"Uh yeah, we met already," I replied.
We talked about our plans, deciding to go in two teams. Scarlet and Claire are going to check the dark alleys where the group's activity has been on a rise. While I and Ray will go to one of their supposed hideouts.
The school went by without any more incidents, phew.
I can't help but feel a little bit weird, today has been weird, the rumours in school, the temporary truce and the third group.
The night was dark. I packed a dagger and my gun before going out. I met Ray at the Bar.
"Should we roll out?" I asked.
"No, not now."
"What?" I let out a surprised cry.
"Just wait, you will thank me later."
We waited for 15 minutes before leaving for the hideout, as we closed in, a car came our way and Ray pulled me into a tight street.
Our bodies pushed together, we stood there till the car vanished from sight.
"Who were they?"
"Potential threats."
"How?"
"I saw them going into the building."
"You came here alone? Are you crazy?"
"What?"
"You know you could have been hurt!"
"Why are you so worried about me?"
That stopped me right in my tracks. It's a fair question. But I am not sure myself. I always saw her as a loner in school. She used to eat alone, sit alone, play alone. No friends whatsoever. Until I started eating with her. She always was nice to me. I saw her as a weak one, but now she is all-powerful.
"Cat got your tongue?"
"I... Don't know."
She pressed her lips onto mine. The moment of bliss didn't last long but left a sensation on my lips.
"Don't get too used to it." She said and walked away, towards the hideout.
I followed her we sneaked in through a broken window. The edge of the glass cut her forearm open, she didn't even seem to notice.
"Hey Ray, here," I whispered as I wrapped my handkerchief around her wound.
"It's not necessary."
"You can't go dripping blood everywhere. And what if it gets infected?"
She seemed to say something but I couldn't hear it.
I softly pecked her lips, she seemed stunned at first then she gazed me right in the eye.
"You know I am an enemy right?"
"No, you are not my enemy. You are my friend, a person who I care about a lot."
She kissed me again, our kiss lasted longer than before, filled with passion our tongues intertwined. At last, we pulled back, out of breath.
"That was nice." She said.
I nodded and we started walking into the building.
"I will take the fourth and fifth floor, you get the second and third," I said.
"What about the first?" She asked.
"I guess you are stuck with me on that."
She smiled and we made our way to the first floor. As expected, the first floor had nothing. She stopped on the second floor and I moved up to the fourth.
I took out my gun as I started walking in the unsettling corridor, wallpapers tearing down, broken windows, scratched doors. This would make a great horror movie set.
I ducked behind a table as a man dragged two girls into a room. I couldn't quite make out the face.
This is it. They are here. I should get Ray.
"Aaaaahhh!" A scream echoed from the room. I know that voice Scarlet!
I kicked the door wide open, the masked goon startled to see me drops his knife.
"Big mistake. "
Bang!
I shot him right in the chest as he drops like a sad pancake.
I untie Scarlet who hugs me. I notice she has an on her collarbone. Supposedly given by the goon.
She cries in my shoulder as I hold her tight.
"How did you end up here?" I asked.
"They caught us in the streets, " she said. "There were too many of them."
She cried more.
That means Claire is in danger too, the second girl was her. But she isn't here. I have to find her. But I can't Scarlet as a crying mess. I tightly grip her.
"It's ok. You are ok now."
"I almost died!"
"But you didn't, you are alive. The Scarlet I know won't let anyone who hurt her get away that easy. Want some revenge?"
She smirked. "You always have the right words."
I chuckled, she pressed her lips onto mine. "I like you, Andrew, from the very beginning."
"I like you too," I said.
We have been working together for years now. She has been ever so graceful with her computer skills. Hacking into almost anything that she came across with ease.
"Where is Claire?" I asked.
"She was taken, they went through that door."
"Ok, let's go."
We sneaked into the room, Claire was sitting in a chair, tied and half-naked.
"So miss Claire, how are you doing?" The leader asked.
Two other goons laughed.
"Better than you will be doing when my men get here." She said.
We shifted to a different hiding position for a better view. Then another chair came into view, Ray!
Just like Claire, she was tied.
"Alright, on the count of three," I whispered.
Scarlet nodded.
"One. Two.Three."
As we stood up the leader pointed his gun straight at my head.
"Took you long enough." He said. "Move out."
We walked into the centre of the room.
"You!"
The leader was none other than my Dad's best friend and Partner. Joshua.
"You son of a gun!" I said." Pathetic, backstabbing weasel! We trusted you."
"Now, now, Mr.heir. Watch your tongue, you are after all in a precarious spot."
I gotta be careful, one mistake and he will blow my head off.
I took away my gun and my dagger. I felt completely powerless, weak.
"Now, time to die!" The leader exclaimed.
"Exactly," I said.
The leader stunned by my words asked, "what?"
"Time to die, but not for us for you."
The two supporting goons fall.
"What did you do?"
"Me? Nothing. However, Scarlet modified my gun and dagger to electrocute the wielder." Taking the chance I tackle him to the ground as Scarlet stomps on his hand and take the gun away.
"Time to die." I said before I shot him in the knee. "In a little while though, I am sure dad would like to do this himself."
We untied Ray and Claire and took Joshua to Dad.
There he was 'executed'.
The Sharks and Bluerose agreed to call the truce permanent on a special request by us four.
And the main event is still left. Whom do I love?
Claire. Wise, passionate, cute.
Ray. Bossy, strong, tough.
Scarlet. Smart, understanding, nice.
I closed my eyes. And I dreamed of her, the girl whom I love.
I ringed her phone first thing in the morning.
"Hey."
"Hi."
"Are you busy?"
"No, what's up?"
"Meet me at the Cafe. 11 am. On the dot."
I reached the cafe early, too early. Still, an hour left before she comes. But the wait is worth it. I turn my gaze. And I see her, standing near a tree outside. She came early too.
"Hey!"
"Oh, you are early."
"Yeah."
"What did you want to talk about?"
"Should we go in first?"
"Yeah sure."
We drank coffee, as I tried to muster up the courage to speak my mind.
"Ray, will you be my girlfriend?"
Startled by the sudden proposal, she placed her cup down.
"Are you proposing to me?" She had a spark in her eyes that I never saw before.
" uh yeah?"
"YES!"
She exclaimed before kissing me, her lips were soft, and I could taste the coffee on her tongue. It was blissful as long as it lasted.
" I want to be with you forever."
THE END.
