"Joey Stern?"
"Ah, yes. That's me. Ma'am"
"The manager wants to see you now, this way please."
Joey knew this would be easy and he will nail the interview as he had practiced for the past few days. Every line was programmed in his brain like “Tell me about yourself” and “What can you contribute in our company?” “Why do you want to be an auditor?”.
This will be his first job if ever he will be accepted. He spent his five years of life mastering Accountancy as his degree and got no merits but lessons he will never forget.
As the nice lady in Dior led him to a big silent room which is the board meeting room, he suddenly felt uneasy about the view in front of him. The lady reminded him that he will be next to the applicant talking cheeky with the manager which is a sign of thumbs up to the manager. The applicant passed him leaving with the secretary.
“Thelma, please shut the door.”
“Uh sir, you still have an applicant.”
“Oh, who the hell are you? Are you applying for a maintenance job? That’s fine. You are hired.”
“No, sir.”
“Then why are you here?”
“I am applying for your company as an auditor.”
“Oh. You better not waste my time, boy. I still have a meeting in Nevada.”
They finally sat down and this was not right he thinks as the bald man stares at him rudely. Judging his appearance by hand gestures endlessly which made him distracted from getting out the right words from his mouth.
“Is that all. All right. We will call you next week.”
“Why are you being so rude?”
“Pardon me?”
“Why are you not serious about me?”
“To tell you the truth boy, I already hired somebody in this position and you will stand no chance about it. Why don’t just do me a favor and get your ass home.””
“Listen guy, I spent my life in college studying this career and I will not go home empty handed. I need this job, please.”
“Boy, you are disgracing yourself, look at you. You’re not the right candidate so go home.”
With a sigh and unbreakable stare at the mean bald guy, he got up feeling injustice by what he had encountered today. Maybe this was really not for him. He has to look for more and move forward as his mother always says.
And with one glance at the secretary who was talking at the phone, saw her get a paper on pile and crumpled a paper with his face on. He fled from the scene and never to return again.
Everyone has their darkest days and it just so happens that Joey had been a victim for today. With a numb feeling overcoming him, he barely cannot hear what the people on the lobby was saying. And so, it hit him, depression.
He was thinking of going home, buying lots of stuff and never get out of his apartment. He needs repair and healing and he knows movies will care for him.
As he was entering the building’s 8th floor elevator, he bumped into a man. A man a bit taller than him, wearing slick suit and holding a heavy briefcase. He saw a golden lighter fell and picked it up before the stranger gets mad at him too.
“Oh, sorry man. Your lighter.”
“You work for here?”
“No, sir. I am just an applicant and I think I got rejected.”
“Oh. Sorry to hear that. See you around. Oh, what time is it?”
He shoved his polo wrist and seek the time on his watch, eleven. The man fled away like a vanishing act. Joey was left with his lighter on his hand. He wants to return it but the man is nowhere to be found or if he went inside that office, it was too embarrassing to get himself again in there as he was humiliated and insulted.
So, he went in the elevator himself, pushing the button of ground floor. He felt a little hope of relief inside but still confused about what he should feel as the elevator went to 7th.
The elevator blinked on its malfunctioning state and started to shook him. Then there was a loud blast one floor above him which he thinks the elevator really needed a fix.
“Oh, what a lucky day!”
He tried to open the door but it was stuck.
After minutes of trying, he slumped his despair on the floor. And crumpled himself just like his resume.
He felt that it was unmanly to cry in a public place so he cried anyway.
With hours of idle time spent in the box, he slept all his way dreaming of riding a spacecraft bringing him to a new world which is full of unicorn. He had never seen one so he wants one.
He saw the most beautiful unicorn he had ever seen a gold rimmed horn came charging at him because he called its name “Blythe”. Neither he doesn’t know why he said it. Who the hell was Blythe? He doesn't even know.
He was shaking in fear again because he might die if the unicorn would pierce his heart with its horn.
As he screamed, he was being held by hands on his shoulder and his arm. It was all just a nightmare he thought.
He wonders why are there yellow guys trying to get him out when it was just a technical error on the elevator.
“Are you okay man?”
“Yes, no. Actually, on the inside.”
“God bless you son. Do you have any injuries?”
“No. I got stuck that’s all.”
“Well get to the medic over there. You need it.” The yellow man pointed the vehicle at him.
The medic examined him and found no single injuries on him.
“He’s fine. I can release him.”
“Why what happened?”
“The 8th floor got blown up by some terrorist. You're a lucky man. How did you make it out alive?”
“I got stuck in an elevator. Why?”, he said in confusion.
“Don’t you know? That office got blown up and everyone was dead in there. Including the CEO.”
“What?”
“Just watch the news.”
He showed him his phone and saw the whole happenings on the news which flashed his ostrasizer's face. Pronounced dead with the rest of the employees of that floor.
