A story Titled: To Love Somebody

By: Iyke Michael

“I

can do this,” he exhales, “yes, I can do this, one, two, three…,” Jared said

and stood up from the wheelchair. With pains all over his joints, he was

determined to take his first step after the fatal accident that put him in a

wheelchair for two years. His two legs could not carry his body, he kept

breathing fasts while fastening his hands on the wall. The pain kept him from

standing straight, as he tried to suppress the pain, his eyes fell on the

picture frame that hung on the wall. He tried to re-live the moment, seeing how

happy he was on the picture. It was a happy family picture, with his only

sister and mom. When he could no longer bear the pain, he dragged the

wheelchair closer and slowly slumped on it. While taking a long deep breath, he

was startled by stretching of a vehicle tire. “Are you blind? Can’t you see?” A

woman’s voice yelled from outside. Jared quickly wheeled himself towards the

window.

The

driver ignored the woman and began to speak in an angry tone to someone in the

vehicle. Watching through the window, Jared focused his gaze on the lady in the

passenger’s side of the car. She was young and beautiful. She stares in thin

air while receiving those harsh words. She seemed to be fighting back tears.

She raised her right hand and readjusted the safety belt, from the look on her

face, it was as if the safety belt was adding to her sorrow. She quietly

removed the safety belt in such a way to avoid eye contact from the man.

The

young man became more furious seeing how she ignored him. He pulled a handbag

from the back seat and threw it on her face. The bag fell and the things in it

must have fallen off. She bent and began to gather those things.  After

putting them back in the bag, she opened the door and was about leaving. The

man drew her by the shoulder and turning to face him, she received a hot slap.

She quickly dropped the bag on her laps and covered her face with her both

palm. After some seconds, she uncovered her face, revealing tears streaming

down her cheeks. He was not moved by her tears but continued pouring hot coals

on her. She gave him a quick look before exiting the vehicle.

He

followed suit and ordered her to halt. She obeyed but gave him her back. He

pulled the handbag with force and pushed her down. On the ground, she cried her

heart out. Jared left his room and wheeled himself outside. “You are so

heartless, man!” Jared yelled while drawing closer to them. “What has she done

to you, to deserve such treatment? You are damn wicked. What kind of a man are

you?” Jared roared. “Look at this one talking! Why don’t you stand up and talk

to me like a man,” “You can’t talk to him that way,” She cried out.

“So, you still talk, I thought you lost your tongue. And for your information,

I can talk to this lame man, the way I please. And you can do nothing about

that,” “Shame on you Mark! I will not allow you, talk to him that way,” “Or

what?” Mark asked, walking closer to her, “what will you do?” “If it means

fighting you with the last drop of my blood, I will do it,” “You? Fight me? Hahaha

hahaha! This is new, baby, you should try becoming a comedian, because I think

you are good. Hahahahaha! Oh! God, you will fight me because of this boy, who

probably pee always in his pant.” “How dare you?” she slapped him. “What? You

slapped me?” “And I will do it again, if …,” Mark interrupted her with a hot

slap and began to hit her. “Leave her alone!” Jared roared having taken enough

of the insult. “I said leave her alone!” He repeated. Mark pushed her on the

ground before turning to Jared. “Or what? What will you do?” Mark challenged

while drawing closer to him. “You don’t want to know,” Jared threatened. “But I

do, show me what you got,” Mark said poking him in the chest. “Stop… poking…

me,” Jared ordered fuming with anger. “Oh! Is someone talking to me?” “Leave

him alone Mark? You son of a bitch,” She yelled from where she lye. “You see,

my girlfriend is defending you; I think she is just like you, only talking but

cannot do anything. You stand and face me like a man if you are one. Oh! I

forgot you can’t stand…,” He mocked and began to walk away. “Your defender

can’t even stand! Both of you are useless. Now get back in the car let’s go,”

“Mark, you must be very stupid to think I will have anything to do with you

again.” “Oh! You now have the guts to talk back to me? Fine! Now pay me back

what you owe me,” “I will, when I get the money,” “No, no, no, no, no,

sweetheart, you pay me now, or you get back to the car,” “Am not going anywhere

with you,” “You don’t have a choice,” He said and began to drag her back to the

car. “leave her alone!” Jared ordered, but Mark ignored him and continued

dragging her.

Jared

wheeled himself towards them and pulled her away from him. Mark wanted to

retaliate, but she stood in his way. He pushed her aside and gave Jared a hot

slap before pushing him out of his wheelchair. She ran to Jared to help him,

“Are you ok?” she asked while helping him seat up. Mark came again and held her in her left

leg and began to drag her. Her cries touched Jared, that he dared himself,

irrespective of the Sevier pains, he stood on his two legs. “I said you should

leave her alone!” He roared. Mark turned and was surprised to see him on his

feet. He left her and went after him. Mark threw the first punch which landed

on Jared’s face and he was off balance and fell. Mark went down with him and

was about hitting him the more. Jared raised his two legs and put them across

Mark’s neck and squeezed. Mark struggled and begged for his life. After much

squeeze, Jared released him. And once more, he stood up but was afraid to take

a step. She came and held him by the waist and he began to walk. Mark continued

coughing while watching them leave.
