Adventure

This story contains themes or mentions of suicide or self harm.

Born in a small, shadowed town, the middle child of mixed ethnicities, Ethel faced a world filled with hatred and mockery. In a time when being different was seen as a flaw, she became a target not just from children but also from teachers and authority figures. Her name, old-fashioned and out of place, stood in stark contrast to her siblings, Lily and Billy. While Lily danced joyfully in the sun and Billy laughed with ease, Ethel drifted through life like a ghost—unnoticed and unloved. She was a product of a moment of violence, a lingering reminder of her mother's pain, which resulted in her being met with disdain and resentment from the very woman who was supposed to nurture her.

In their cramped home, the air was thick with bitterness and unspoken words. Ethel's mother often unleashed her frustrations on her, the weight of her own choices falling squarely on Ethel’s fragile shoulders. It was as if Ethel had become a vessel for her mother's pain and anger. While her father drowned his sorrows in alcohol, oblivious to the chaos surrounding him, Ethel endured the silent screams of her existence. She spent countless nights yearning for a glimpse of love that seemed forever out of reach, feeling like a burden in her own home.

As the years passed, her life unfolded as a series of disappointments, leading Ethel to a fascination with the concept of death. It became a subject that felt like an old friend—one who understood her pain and offered solace in the form of escape. She found herself drawn to men who flitted in and out of her life like shadows, using her for their own purposes and leaving her feeling more alone with each encounter. In her eyes, they were just a reflection of the disdain she had grown accustomed to, yet she clung to the hope that one day, someone would see beyond the surface and recognize her for who she truly was.

One chilly evening, as Ethel wandered through the woods, she encountered a figure cloaked in darkness. He was breathtakingly handsome, his presence both captivating and unsettling. His eyes sparkled like stars in the night sky, inviting and mysterious. “I am Azrael,” he introduced himself, “the angel of death.” Unlike the grim specter she had imagined, he radiated a warmth that made her heart skip. Intrigued by her spirit, he revealed, “I have never met a soul quite like yours—one so resilient yet so battered.”

“Come with me,” he whispered, his voice smooth as silk. “I can show you the garden of Eden, a paradise beyond your wildest dreams.”

Ethel's heart raced at the thought. The garden was a place she had often heard described as a realm of beauty untouched by the cruelty of the world she knew. But to reach it, they had to navigate through a blinding time warp. “Close your eyes,” he instructed gently, “for the light is bright enough to blind you.”

As they traveled, Ethel felt the warmth of his presence envelop her, a stark contrast to the coldness she had always known. However, the brightness behind her eyelids was overwhelming, and doubt crept into her mind. When they finally arrived, she opened her eyes to find herself just outside the gates adorned with flaming swords. The garden lay before her, lush and vibrant, colors she had never seen painting the landscape in a breathtaking display. It was a world where love flourished, where no one suffered, and where the burdens of life melted away.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” Azrael asked, his voice laced with wonder. Ethel nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. She longed to step through the gates, to escape the agony of her life, but the harsh reality of her existence pulled her back with an unyielding grip.

“Why must I return?” she asked, her voice trembling as uncertainty washed over her.

“Every soul has its time,” he replied softly, his expression earnest. “But you have a choice. You can take my hand and join me in the land of the dead, or you can return to the life you know, filled with pain and suffering.”

Ethel looked deeply into his eyes, searching for answers. They sparkled with intelligence and understanding, offering a glimpse of the love for which she had yearned her entire life. Yet, the thought of abandoning her faith, her family—even the pain that had shaped her into who she was—felt like an insurmountable weight. She hesitated, caught in a tempest of emotions.

As she stood there, caught between the two worlds, Azrael extended his hand, his expression inviting and sincere. Ethel's heart pounded in her chest; she felt torn between the allure of forbidden love and the life she had fought so hard to survive. The garden whispered promises of beauty and peace, while the cruel world behind her loomed with shadows that felt all too familiar.

In that moment, time stood still. The choice loomed before her, heavy yet exhilarating. Would she step forward into the unknown, surrendering to the promise of solace and love? Or would she retreat to the pain that had defined her existence for so long, clinging to the remnants of a life that felt more like a burden than a blessing?

Ethel took a deep breath, her mind racing. She thought of Lily and Billy, their laughter echoing in her memory like distant chimes. She thought of her mother’s cold touch and her father’s absence, the love that had been so painfully elusive. In the garden, she saw the possibility of a different life, one where she could be free from the shackles of sorrow.

With trembling hands, she reached out toward Azrael, testing the waters of the unknown. His hand was warm, grounding her amidst the whirlwind of her thoughts. Just as she was about to take the plunge, a flicker of doubt crossed her mind. What would happen to her family? Would they be better off without her?

Caught in this turbulent moment of indecision, Ethel felt the weight of her choice pressing down on her. The garden glimmered with hope, while the shadows of her past loomed behind her, ready to consume her once more. With all her heart, she longed for peace, yet the tether to her life and her loved ones felt impossibly strong.

Ethel stood at the precipice of her existence, ready to embrace the unknown or retreat back to the pain that had defined her for so long. Would she let go of the past, or would she cling to the fragments of a life that had brought her nothing but heartache? The answer lay before her, shimmering in the twilight of her decision.
