Warning: Some mentions of violence
Katy walked into the building, looking around. It was a snooty office, with white collared men and slicked back hair. Katy had never thought she would step foot in here, but she had gotten a call 10 minutes ago saying something was wrong. So, she had hurried over. But, everything seemed fine.
“Katy!” Pant, gasp, “how do you,” pant, gasp, “run so fast?” Diego came running in after her, panting heavily and throwing his hands on his knees.
Katy rolled her eyes. “Help me look around.”
Diego breathed a few more heavy breaths before following Katy. There were office cubicles galore and carpet half an inch thick. Nothing was out of place, or at least seemed weird, after all, Katy had never been there before.
Diego still breathed loudly, running a rose/embroidered handkerchief over his face. “My momma made it,” he said, making Katy shush him with her pointer finger held to her lips. Diego coughed and shot into a salute, before continuing behind his leader’s path.
Katy entered a conference room, still ringing with the talk of an earlier meeting. Katy sniffed the air. No, it involved much yelling and trying to get points. Sniff. Something to do with…sniff…company budget and…sniff…the boss's divorce problems? Sheesh.
Diego walked in. “Hey Katy, I found this cookie out there on a random guys desk-“
“Sh, Diego, would you just shush?”
“Ugh, fine, I guess you can miss out on-“
Suddenly, a maniacal laugh began echoing in the conference room. Katy looked around, and Diego yelped. Katy rolled her eyes, but continued scanning.
Then, a giant explosion erupted from the center of the room. Katy flew back, hitting the wall. Diego dived down, hiding behind a desk. Katy slid to the floor, slowly getting to her feet again and licking the blood off her cut lip. There, in the center of the room, he stood.
His hair was a curly mess atop his head, swerving this way and that as the wind waved through. His villain suit was just a pair of black pants and a white t-shirt, but with a tie that stood out like a stop sign. It was bright green. No, neon. Katy’s eyes started burning at the sight.
After the laugh died into a small upturned smile, his face was visible. His eyes were a piercing shade of blue. “Hello, Katy.”
I’m her best snarl, Katy replied “Hello, Paul.”
Paul looked distraught for a second, and then barked “For the last time, my name is Slicer, not Paul. Ugh, you always seem to forget that.” He groaned and rubbed the space between his eyebrows with his heavily manicured fingers. In the other hand, a weapon lay limp.
“Oh, I didn’t forget, I just don’t care,” Katy said , before launching into a well practiced ‘hi-ya!’ and kicking the weapon out of “Slicer’s” hand.
“Hey!”
For the next few minutes, Katy and Sli-Paul fought. Hands flew. Guns shit a few well aimed, but poorly executed shots at one another. A few times, Diego, poor, sweet Diego, was roped in, taking a few punches before evidently passing out and laying crumpled on the floor. The fighting soon escalated out of the office building, slowly making its way through most of Up Town CoopersVille City.
Soon, Katy and Paul were standing across from each other on the top of City Hall. Katy clasped and unclasped her fingers multiple times, and Paul licked his lips a couple times.
“Are you gonna do something?” Katy asked, not moving.
“Why, you want me to?”
Suddenly, the City Hall building exploded beneath them, and Katy shook. The building overtook her and she eventually fell into the depths of limestone and brick. The last thing before she blacked out was Paul’s laugh, as he was taken away by a giant helicopter plastered with his logo on the side.
;
Katy sat on the couch, holding an ice pack to her bruise-incrusted forehead. She stared angrily at the window.
“Hi, Katy,” Diego said as he walked in, an olive-green apron draped over his shoulders. He was holding a plate of cookies, the aroma drifting to Katy’s nostrils. Though they smelled delicious, Katy turned moodily to the side, facing the back of the itchy couch.
Diego looked at her, watching the bruise on her forehead swell in front of him. Ignoring his own thumping bruise that lay purple on his shin, he walked forward. “I made cookies,” he continued, waving the plate around a little and singing a little on ‘cookies’. Katy smiled, but quickly wiped it off and replaced it with an eye roll.
Diego continued walking forward, sitting by Katy’s feet and setting the cookies on the coffee table. “Go away, Diego,” Katy groaned. Diego ignored her, grabbing a cookie off the platter.
“Oh, they are still warm,” he said, holding it in both palms. He brought it up to his lips, taking a bite. “Mm, these are super good. Can you smell ‘em?”
Katy could.
“Oh, wow, these just melt in your mouth,” he continued, putting the rest of the cookie in his mouth. Katy’s stomach grumbled. “Oh, I heard that, Katy. Are you sure you don’t want one?”
Katy didn’t respond.
“Alright, I'm just gonna take another-“ Diego started.
Suddenly, Katy was up and grabbing a cookie, shoveling it in her mouth. The flavor erupted in her mouth. She grabbed another. Diego smiled. “Are they good?”
Katy nodded. She took one more, and after shoving it down her mouth, sat back. Diego reached over and wiped a bit of chocolate off her face with a napkin, and then grabbed the plate. “Alright, by the way, I found some info about the ‘Slicer’” he said, struggling to make an air quote with a plate in hand.
Katy sat up again. “Really?”
Diego smiled and said “Yup. His current hiding spot is somewhere in Vine Street. We can head there later tonight-“
Diego was interrupted by a squeal resonating from Katy, and her arms wrapping around his collarbone and a kiss landing on his cheek.
“Thank you so much, Diego,” Katy said, walking into the other room.
Diego let his hand go up to his cheek. The cookie plate was on the floor, cracked and vomiting cookie pieces in a messy halo. But, it didn’t matter.
Katy had kissed him.
;
Katy flipped behind a brick building, standing straight peering around the edge. Diego was behind her, playing ninja and rolling across the sidewalk. Katy again rolled her eyes, but hid a smile.
“Okay, which building is it?” Katy asked, looking around at the long line of buildings ahead of them. “Ugh, it’s just like him to choose a hiding spot in the longest street in CoopersVille City.”
Diego finally stopped rolling and got up, taking a mini ADA (Adversary Discovery Apparatus), and opening it up. Turning left and right, he said “Paul-um, I mean, Slicer, is supposed to be over in that building over there. The one behind that trash can.”
Katy nodded and ran over, diving behind trees and lampposts. Diego followed, not so cleanly, behind her. Eventually, after much stopping so Diego could catch up, Katy stood in front of the building. It was a brick 3-story, with windows spaced apart, two per floor.
Katy pulled out a small grappling hook from her belt, and then shot it up to one of the windows. She readied herself, and then began ascending. Diego watched.
“Psst! Psst, sidekick guy!”
Diego turned in circles. “Huh? Hello? Who’s talking?”
“I'm not telling! I just wanna say, Katy-Pie is looking in the wrong place.”
“What? Really? Well, then, where?”
“Yell her down.”
“Uh, Katy! Come here! The ADA is giving me a different reading!”
Katy groaned and descended. When she reached the sidewalk, she retracted the grappling hook and put her hands on her hips. “What is it, Diego?”
“Uh, um…” Diego glanced to his left, “Uh, the ADA, uh, gave me different coordinates, and uh…”
Katy rolled her eyes, for the millionth time, and said “Well, where?”
Suddenly, the little trash can in between them began to rumble. Slowly, the lid opened, in half. Light spilled over the sides and lit up a ladder that went down. Diego and Katy looked at each other, and then Katy stepped into the trash can.
;
They climbed down for what felt like hours, but was actually only 10 minutes.
Diego complained most of the way.
“Ugh, this is taking so long!”
Katy, again, rolled her eyes, something she realized she was getting better at. “Can you hush it?”
“All I’m saying is, I’m tired, I’m cold, and I wanna go back to the headquarters!”
“But we have to find Paul! He can’t get away, again,” Katy responded, wincing at the again part.
All the sudden, a giant booming voice echoed from just a few feet below, followed by the pattering of running feet. “IT’S SLICER!!!”
Katy smirked, and then let go of the ladder. She fell, only about 3 feet, landing on her booted toes. “Ha!”
Then, she was flattened on the floor, Diego groaning. “Ow…”
Katy kicked Diego in the stomach and stood up, shooting, “Get up, Diego.”
This time, it was Diego’s turn to roll his eyes. He got up, and then followed Katy. They took a few turns, walking down hallways that seemed to go nowhere.
“This is getting us nowhere!”
“Hush it, Diego! We are almost there!”
And they were. Only a few minutes later, Katy stepped through a doorway. There, sitting on a gold throne, was Paul-uh, I mean, Slicer. He twirled a knife in his hand, looking across the room, finally laying his eyes on Katy.
“Why, hello there, Katy. I see you have found my hiding spot.”
Katy snarled, “Yeah, I sure did, Paul. It wasn’t that hard-“
“Oh my gosh, I’ve told you time and time again, it’s SLICER!”
He threw the knife across the room, stabbing a stone wall. Katy watched, then rolled her eyes.
Slicer stood, throwing his new cape behind him and walking down the mountain of rocks he had sat upon.
“Well, are you ready to fight? I assume that’s why you came all the way down here, right? Not to, you know, just see me?” He said, smiling.
“Obviously not, Paul.”
Slicer rolled his eyes, and then got right in front of Katy. “Well then, let’s go.”
They began fighting. It was about 5 minutes later, around the time when Katy punched Slicer in the face and Slicer pushed Katy into a wall, when Katy looked to Diego, who was standing in the corner, rubbing a bruise from being hit in the shoulder by Slicer.
“Diego! Come help me!” Katy said while dodging blows from Slicer.
“No, I don't think so,” he responded, wiping his face.
“What? Diego, come on,” Katy said.
“No, Katy. You don’t respect me. Besides, I’ve already been paid handsomely. Quite handsomely,” Diego said, clicking a red button.
Suddenly, the ceiling above opened up, revealing the starry night sky. And, with the half-light, the gleaming faces of villains.
“Get her.”
“What!”
Suddenly, Katy was being grabbed by meaty hands and dragged. “Help! Diego, please!”
“No, I’m done, Katy. We’re done.”
With that, Katy was grappled up, taken away by a guy with a jetpack. Slicer-
“Paul!”
Sorry, Paul, stood in the dusk, staring into the sky, watching the girl he had fought and feuded with and loved be taken away.
And all he could think about was how to get her back.

Emma, this story was such an entertaining read—I loved the playful banter and fast-paced action! This line especially made me smile: “Oh, I didn’t forget, I just don’t care,” Katy said, before launching into a well practiced ‘hi-ya!’ and kicking the weapon out of “Slicer’s” hand. Katy's snarky confidence here really made her personality shine, adding fun and depth to the hero-villain dynamic. Your characters had great chemistry and the plot twist with Diego was brilliant—thanks for sharing this engaging story!
