The Escape from the Factory
The sound of gears and metal machines coming from the factory in the clouds above the sleeping town of ponies and their families, kept a young Pegasus with an orange coat awake. The stories behind the sounds of the factory always were truly terrifying to the filly. The filly looked over at the light blue coated mare sleeping on the cloud next to her, with an anxious expression, “Rainbow? Are you awake?” Her voice was shaky as she started tapping the older mare. “Scootaloo for pony’s sake, why are you still up? You have your flight test in the morning, is everything okay?” The sleepy voice came from Rainbow Dash as she started to sit up on her cloud bed. Scootaloo looked back up at the factory as she crawled into the mare who was like her older sister, “What happens to the ponies who fail the test?” The ruby color in Rainbow Dash’s eyes glossed over as her expression hardened, “You will not fail, Scootaloo.” Scootaloo nodded as the sounds of the factory continued throughout the night. Scootaloo looked back at the older mare who had passed out again due to exhaustion from work, Scootaloo could see it written in Rainbow Dash’s face…
Scootaloo woke up alone on the cloud as the sunlight warmed her underdeveloped wings, still small but stronger thanks to Rainbow’s intense training. Scootaloo stood up on her hooves as a skinny light brown Pegasus flew to her side, “Hey Scoots.” The pair nuzzled the other’s neck fur and Scootaloo felt her anxiety wash away, “Good morning, Orion, and happy birthday my love.” Orion nervously smiled as he nudged his hoof shyly, “Lucky me to have my 17th birthday on our final test, right my little trickster?” The shared anxiety of the pair was obvious but both pushed it down as Scootaloo grabbed her locket of her parents, Snap Shutter and Mane All-good, who were off on another extortion. It was her sweet 16 birthday present and Scootaloo smiled as it found its place around her neck. The pair then turned to fly towards the flight school for their final…
The school was filled with stressed and anxious students as they started to whisper to each other about theories of what would happen if a Pegasus failed the flight test. Some said the school would feed the failures to a pack of Timber-wolves while others said the Pegasus who fail the tests get their wings clipped off. Orion and Scootaloo shared a nervous gulp as they headed towards the testing area. The instructor was already yelling orders at the students in mid flight. One of the students who was being barked at had a dark midnight blue coat with a black rose for her cutie mark. She flew perfectly from what Scootaloo could see but just as the dark brown eyes locked on Scootaloo’s purple eyes, the student then started to plummet to the clouds below. Orion and Scootaloo watched in horror as the mare refused to reopen her wings even as she fell to the ground. CRACK… The sound was followed by a scream of pain coming from the filly. The instructor looked at the next students and continued to bark orders at them like nothing had happened. Scootaloo and Orion moved to see where the student had landed, both pairs of eyes landed on the student’s body. Her back legs were twisted and bent in ways that didn’t look impossible for anypony. Orion looked back at the instructor with hateful eyes, “Are you going to help her?” The instructor ignored him and continued to call out the next student to the test. Orion angrily sighed and flew down to the student, who was trying to stand back up. The instructor yelled down at the student and Orion, “If you don’t get back up here I will fail you too, you good for nothing colt!” Scootaloo snarled at the instructor, “Oh shut up for Celestia’s sake!” After she flew down towards the pair. Orion then nodded towards Scootaloo as they forced the student’s legs back in the correct place while the student howled in pain. Scootaloo looked down at her, “It’s going to be okay. Think about something else. What is your name?” A painful grant came from the filly, “Rose.” Rose looked up at Orion and Scootaloo just as the instructor yelled their names and the word “failed”....
The three were shoved into a covered wagon and forced into the corner as a pair of masked Pegasus climbed into the wagon. Scootaloo locked eyes with one of the masked suits, whose eyes looked familiar. The ruby eyes looked back hers with horror. Orion pulled Scootaloo close to him while Rose sat alone, watching everyone else. Her dark hazel eyes were the only ones with absolutely no emotion even though the silence was filled with fear and uncertainty. The wagon came to an abrupt stop as the suited Pegasus stood up. The one with ruby eyes stared back at Scootaloo longingly as if the masked pony wanted to say something, but refused to speak…
As the failed trio walked into the dark tunnels below of the nightmarish factory, one of the masked ponies started to speak, “Welcome to the Rainbow Factory. This will be your final resting place.” Scootaloo began to think of all the rumors and stories. There’s long been rumors as to how rainbows are made in Equestria; some say dark magic from an old Ursa Minor while others say an unknown princess lived in the cloudy hills of Clouds-dale, but one thing is certain. Rainbows need Spectra for their bright colors. Little is known about streams of Spectra, the individual colors of the rainbow, that flow through large grates of the factory and into vast vats that are shown on tours. No pony knows how Spectra is made though. As Scootaloo continued to question and think of the rainbows, The red eyed Pegasus began to think to herself as well. To become an employee of the upper Rainbow Factory means sacrificing any life outside these black walls of storm. Those few who ever managed to make it out without a death by the machines became disturbed and lost all humanity, some far too damaged to bring themselves to talk about the factory. Some of us are picked out by the factory when we show too much potential. I could have had a normal life if it wasn’t for that damn Sonic Rainboom six-year-old me did. It did so much, in the grand scheme of things, she thought bitterly as her eyes looked back at Scootaloo…
The trio was led into an empty room with six glowing tubes of the colorful Spectra in the front end of the room. There in the center of the room was a mincingly looking machine. From a central stack, six hoses were connected to each Spectra tube. At the top of the stack was a single opening, red with what Scootaloo could only hope was rust even though the rest of the machine was shiny and new looking. Above that part of the device was a fairly complex looking object, with chains and gears hanging off of beams and pipes loosely hiding in the shadows of the factory’s ceiling. Above the dark machine was a metal scaffolding, with doors on either side leading out of the main room. Down in front of the device, a small collection of softly crying ponies who sat in gloom, some held onto others while others tightened their bandages. The ponies, some in their ex school’s uniform while others didn’t have an uniform, watched as the trio joined them. Just as Orion and Scootaloo sat down, there was a commotion in the group of ex-students. One colt from an unidentified school grabbed the mare that was beside him and the pair took off, headed towards one of the doors on the scaffolding. Immediately, two suited ponies launched at record speed at the couple with tasers in hooves. The colt saw that both tasers were aimed at the mare and without a second thought the colt flew directly in the path of both tasers causing him to spasm in air, and then dropped like a stone. With an audible crack as he landed, and a violent burst of twitching, all the other ponies walked back, staring horrified at what could happen to them. They all watched as the mare stopped flying and dropped to the side of her fallen love. Rose’s dark eyes watched as the mare’s dark red mane fell in front of her face as she cried, begging him to get up again. He didn’t move. Scootaloo felt Orion pull her closer to him as she refused to take her eyes off of Rose. Rose knew that she was being watched by at least three pairs of eyes, but she still didn’t show anything remotely closer to an emotion…
A few official looking ponies came in from the door on the scaffolding and the masked Pegasus with the red eyes flew up to them. One of the so-called doctors leaned onto the metal railway and began to speak, “You have heard rumors about this factory and most of them are better than the truth. As many of you have gathered, you will die here.” Before he could finish his monologue, he had clearly practiced in the mirror, several fillies began to talk over him. The mysterious pony pulled off her mask, unveiling more than her ruby eyes. She let her calling card of a mane show, the gorgeous rainbow hair of what many ponies know. Several of the fillies gasped as Scootaloo’s knees weakened as it hit her. It was Rainbow Dash. Scootaloo’s thoughts raced through her mind, and the room started spinning. Orion held Scootaloo tightly as she locked eyes with the mare who helped her fly. Scootaloo opened her mouth to speak but another pony shouted up at Rainbow first, “So this is how the Element of Loyalty spends her time, being a pawn to a cruel company. It’s sad actually because you had to work up the ranks to be able to have a second life in Ponyville.” The voice came from Rose who started to walk towards the machine as she continued, “You swore your loyalty to the Princess of Friendship, and to Snap Shutter.” Rainbow Dash looked back towards the crying Scootaloo holding her mother’s locket in her hoof. The doctor spoke up before Rainbow Dash could respond, “You have no reason to speak out, mule.” The doctor looked back at the crying pony with red hair who was still laying beside her dead boyfriend then turned to look at Scootaloo and Orion, “Grab the brown colt and get that dead mule out too,” he barked at two suited ponies.
“No!” Scootaloo screamed as she and Orion jumped up. Suited ponies cornered Orion, forcing Scootaloo into the redheaded pony. He tried to leap out of the way, in hopes of flying out of their reach, but one of the stallions kicked at him. The hooves connected to Orion’s shoulder causing the colt to collapse with a wheezing gasp. “Get back,” The masked ponies yelled as two more picked up the body of the other colt. Scootaloo felt the hoof of the red haired pony shake as the suits dragged the whimpering Orion to the front of the room. The giant machine started to come to life with a low metal growl, and the assembly of chains lifted off the top and moved towards the floor. Scootaloo noticed that they were shackles, and the official ponies clasped Orion and the corpse into them. Braving a look up with tears in , Orion turned to Scootaloo, “Don’t worry, my little trickster, it will be okay. Please don’t look, whatever happens. I love you, trickster, always.” Scootaloo stammered weakly back as the tears burned her cheeks, “...I love you too, my love.”
With a quick push of the remote in the doctor’s hoof, the chains pulled tight and lifted the two colts to the gears. The chains grew taunt and tight, holding each of fillies' limbs straight up and down. “We found out that this machine works better if the bones and ribs are broken,” the doctor explained apathetically, as the chains spun around in opposite directions, twisting the still living Orion. His screams almost covered the echoing crack of bone. One or two jagged ribs tore through his side, and his yells faded to a slow, quiet rattle of breath. The chains untwisted as the shackles opened, dropping the shattered ponies into the single opening. Scootaloo couldn’t pull her eyes away from the scene, even though he told her to look away…
Scootaloo shook her head, briefly wondering where she was and what was happening. In a flash, it all came back, and she jumped to her feet. She had fainted and all her emotions came flooding her. The red headed pony was shaking her, fright engraved on her face. The Suits were starting to approach the other ponies now, tasers and shackles up and ready for the upcoming bloodbath. Ponies started to scream in a blind panic, “They’re coming for us! What do we do?”
Scootaloo looked for an opening. All the doors were blocked, except for one. On the scaffolding. The suited ponies were slowly approaching, not rushing in order to prevent the fillies from freaking out more. Scootaloo spun around, looking for another way, any other way, but there was only one, she realized. “I have a plan,” she whispered to the nearest ponies and tilted her head up to the open door. Other ponies nodded and passed the message along as the masked ponies came closer. Scootaloo looked around, stomping a hoof in the count to signal the plan. She had lost sight of Rose but there wasn't much time for that now. After the third stomp, all hell broke loose…
The ex-students who could fly took to the air while the injured jumped at the masked ponies who were outnumbered. Hooves and wings made contact with teeth and smacked weapons out of reach. While the doctor yelled more orders at the chaos below, Rainbow Dash felt a tap on her shoulder. Rose had gotten up onto the scaffolding unnoticed by the guards, the doctor and Rainbow Dash herself. Before Rainbow could say anything Rose placed a hoof on her mouth, “Shh, you don’t want to do that.” Rainbow looked down at Rose’s wing that held a guard’s taser tightly, “I just want to talk, Rainbow Dash.” As the fighting continued the bodies of both sides started to fall into the machine which roared loudly. A masked pony screamed as his lower half started to be ripped by the gears. He reached out for help from his co-worker who then kicked at his hoof with an annoyed expression, “Failures will die to the device.” Rose pointed at the scene with still no emotion, “Choose where your loyalties lay, because this factory will toss you like that.” Rainbow looked back at Scootaloo leading the flying students towards the scaffolding. When she turned to look back at Rose she was gone again…
The doctor saw that the threat was Scootaloo and began to scream at any and all available guards, “KILL THAT ORANGE BRAT!” Rainbow Dash turned to look at the doctor in horror as the students landed on the scaffolding. Rainbow Dash counted at least 13 of them made it up here, not including Rose. The doctor then ran at Scootaloo enraged as the fillies broke down the door. “NOOO!” Rainbow Dash found herself screaming as she flew at the doctor. He lost his balance when she pushed him, which caused him to go over the railway. The doctor fell to the machine head first, stopping his screaming in an instance. Rainbow Dash ran in front of the students, “FOLLOW ME NOW!” Scootaloo and others didn’t have a choice due to the guards flooding into the room through the other doors…
After months of investigation, murder trials, and funnels Scootaloo walked past the now closed for good factory. She had just gotten back from visiting Rainbow Dash in the psychiatric hospital in Ponyville. Turns out that Rainbow Dash had suffered years of mental stain and abuse from the factory that even her second life fell apart because of it. She had snapped and tried to kill Scootaloo right after they all got out of the factory through the underground pathways. The redhead Pegasus jumped in front of the other pony. Rainbow Dash’s back hooves made direct contact with the smaller mare’s jaw with a loud ‘CRACK’. The white pony’s body hit the floor as blood slowly started to stain the fur. Scootaloo toyed with her locket as feelings of anxiety and uneasiness overcame her when she remembered where she was; back in front of the dreaded factory.
