Crime Thriller

This story contains themes or mentions of physical violence, gore, or abuse.

(I was writing like Raymond Carver so there are no quotation marks.)

There was this girl.

They’re sitting on the couch as he begins the story. Pressed against each other, he looks up into a pair of brown eyes. The owner of said eyes is tall, with brown hair that falls softly to their shoulders. The features accent his own, they could be siblings if not for the differences in their past. There was this girl, he continues, she was stereotypical but would deny it if you mentioned it. She looked a lot like you, not the same eyes. But both of you have the same high cheekbones, and teeth, but I suppose everyone has those in common nowadays. She was killer, all her friends would’ve said so if you asked. She was always there for them and her friends joked that she should become a therapist. She always laughed along, but knew in her heart that wouldn’t be possible for her.

Her family life was also good. Her parents were divorced, but she had her mom and her brother and never wanted for anything. If this sounds too good to be true you would be right. The girl had a secret. There was this voice in her head. It taught her things. The voice taught her how to kill, and for a long, long time no one knew.

I told you the voice taught her how to kill. That was a lie to some extent. The voice taught her when to kill, and how to do it without remorse. Or without much

remorse anyway. The voice did not teach her how to make killing an art, but make it art she did. For years the girl was on the headline of every newspaper, her acts were anyway. She never made the headlines, because the kind girl destined to be a therapist would never kill anyone. Right?

But she was a serial killer?

Yeah she was, not that anyone knew or suspected.

How did she make it art? I didn’t read the news back then.

Let me give you an example. The girl's 7th kill was a famous model. You must have heard of her.

Mari, I heard that she had died. I didn’t know it was murder.

Well they covered it up, but it was, she was the girls first victim where she killed and didn’t puke her guts out after. It was also the first many where she asphyxiated her victims.

That’s what you meant by art I assume?

Yeah, that and she added some… we’ll call them personal touches.

Like what?

Well for about a week, until the autopsy I mean, nobody knew that Mari had been asphyxiated. The girl had killed Mari in the first place by filling the vents with carbon monoxide. I won’t tell you how she got it, but it did the job. Only after Mari was dead did the girl enter the house and add personal touches. She took Mari to the living room and strung her up on a noose. Then she moved everything around to make it look like there was a struggle. Finally to top it all off she wrote #7 on the wall in-

Field 3

Blood?

No! Sharpie. This isn’t a horror movie!

And people believed there was a fight?

Changing the subject I see, but yes. This was her 7th kill remember. It was clean. Nothing like her first.

Which was?

Oh, she stabbed a guy that was passed out behind a bar. She almost got caught for that one, didn’t dispose of her clothes or something, but it wasn’t a problem in the end. She was still a child after all, the girl was able to explain away the whole thing as being a bystander frozen in fear. She did clean the knife though, otherwise the cops definitely would have found her out.

She didn’t regret it?

You definitely would classify her as a sociopath. She did vomit but that was more just a result of all the blood. Another reason why she switched to asphyxiation.

The door opens. Both heads turn to stare as a figure wearing a gas mask appears in the doorway.

The girl has a name, isn’t that right brother? The voice coming from behind the gas mask is distorted and it sends shivers down the boy's spine. He swallows nervously.

What are you doing here? The figure approaches, nearing them. The door slams shut.

I just wanted to pay you a visit. After all, what are siblings for? Also you know too much. We can’t have you blabbing to your pretty little lover now can we? The room

starts to fill with gas. The slow but steady hum of it rushing into the room permeates the air. Two out of three people in the room try to stop breathing, hoping to inhale as little gas as possible. The boy opens his mouth to scream. The girl walks over and puts her hand over his mouth. Clamping his jaw shut.

Can’t have that, now can we. Be a good boy and shut up. The brother is already slumping down on the couch.

That's how you knew, the lover says, you're related.

No shit Sherlock. The sister says with a laugh that sounds demonic through the gas mask. Anyway, I should be going, I don't want the police to catch me. She pulls out a sharpie and walks to the wall. She writes something and then wipes down the sharpie before dropping it. See you never. She says and leaves.

The lovers close their eyes and die seconds after.

Countdown Serial Killer Finally Found

Due to fingerprints discovered on the jaw of her brother the Countdown Serial Killer has been found. Her name is Adelaide and she has been killing since the age of eight according to our records. She is known most famously for the death of model Mari, her 7th kill. Her particular brand of torture is asphyxiation. Usually with carbon monoxide, we don’t know her supplier as of now but we will have further information soon. We are working with experts to find out what happened at the scene of her latest crime. It appears that she asphyxiated her brother and his lover, but why fingerprints were found and what she was doing there is still unknown. If you have any additional information call (541) 388-4681.
