Helen comes to me every Thursday at 3:15pm. She is seventy two years old and lives with her widowed sister. Helen suffers from injuries she received in a car wreck many years ago. Her back is bent from the muscles pulling her spine into a twisted shape, much like a tree that has been damaged by high winds, never to stand tall again. But Helen will. Stand tall. I’m confident of this…not because I’m cocky or arrogant…but because I understand the process. It’s not a mystery. All living things vibrate with electromagnetic energy. Atoms vibrate…vigorously. The frequency is the tricky part. Frequency must be adjusted carefully and with great caution. Big adjustments cause big problems.
Helen’s sister, Anne, has brought her sister in for her weekly session. They enter slowly, holding onto each other, through the front door of my modest abode nestled in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. I moved here over a decade ago to find peace in the natural beauty of the mountains. The quiet forest life brought a deep comfort to my soul.
It’s a beautiful day for healing. Im sitting cross-legged on the padded mats scattered across the dirt floor. For my services, there is no need for fancy furniture or expensive tables. A light mountain breeze softly pulses the white cotton curtain through the open window, carrying the mountain scents into my cabin. The smell of pine, rich damp soil, and the natural scent of organic decay that is always present in the mountains settles my soul in a way that no urban setting ever could. No money will exchange hands today. Or ever. That is not why I heal.
Helen smiles and raises her arm in greeting. She is always cheerful and looks forward to our time together. She’s wearing a soft, cotton, floral printed shift dress that provides ample room for movement. Her silver hair falls around her face, delicately framing her blue-green eyes. Anne doesn't make eye contact - as usual. As an energy healer, I’m used to the side eyes, the skeptical smirks, and the eye rolls. These reactions do not deter me from helping my fellow human who suffers. It’s a calling, you might say.
“Good afternoon, Helen. How are you feeling today?? Any better? You’re looking well.”
“Oh my goodness! Yes!” Helen claps her hands together happily. “I bathed and dressed myself this morning! Can you believe that?!”
I smile at her. “Of course I can. I’m very happy for you Helen. Come sit by me and let’s begin our work.”
Helen is helped down to sit on the mat by Anne. I hold my hand up to help her as she sits. I take her fragile hands in mine.
“Your hands are always so warm.” Helen says this every time we touch.
“Take a deep breath, Helen.” I gently help her lie back against the cushions I’ve provided. She adjusts herself with small movements…getting comfortable. I continue our meditative journey. “Imagine you feel warmth coming from the earth. It’s coming from the center of the earth and you feel connected to the earth and all the life energy living there. You feel the warmth generated from the earth’s core rising into your body…through the bedrock…through the dirt, the clay, the stones.”
As I coach Helen into a meditative state, I simultaneously feel my own energy changing…growing lighter.
“Allow your life energy to connect with the warmth you feel. Every part of you touching the earth is now filled with a beautiful light energy. It slowly seeps up into your bones, your muscles, and to your core. You are light and you are one with the earth…the vibrations of earth’s energy fill you and carry you to a higher place”.
I adjust my position to sit beside Helen with my hands outstretched, hovering over her head and lower body. I feel the vibrations begin in my core. Helen is fully relaxed. I speak softly to her.
“Allow the earth vibrations to enter your body now. This is the vibration of life…of creation. When you feel it, begin humming the healing song.” Helen immediately begins a soft throaty hum…almost a purr.
“Very good Helen. Now you must continue to hum the healing music until I ask you to stop. If you understand, raise your index finger.” Helen’s right hand was resting easily on her diaphragm, and her index finger lifted slightly.
“Thank you Helen. Now, I will begin the healing journey. Maintain the song.”
I relax and begin my journey…I find the vibration and step onto the string. Helen’s soft hum is very distinct from other vibrations. I will be able to find my way back to her. As I move down the string, I can easily see the tangle as I approach it. Her back muscles and the delicate nerves there are a mess of tangled energy. The strings there are dissonant. I work slowly and carefully to disentangle the strings and hold them in place - each being carefully recalibrated to resonate at a higher frequency. Healthy strings create a beautiful symphony of sound…these strings pulse with pain and discord. So much pain. I inspect the work I’ve done in previous sessions. The strings have a memory. They want to return to their original vibrational tune, but they are stretched and warped. They can be adjusted but they will never be the same. I make small adjustments and move back to the tangle to work again. So much more to do but there is hope. I can feel Helen’s beautiful song…I will have to return soon. I can’t stay here long…and Helen can’t sing much longer. I pull on a small tangle of strings to loosen the tension in them. That will certainly provide relief. A few more sessions - maybe as few as two - will have her standing fully upright. I find Helen’s song and travel slowly back to the cabin and Helen. I am tired from the healing. I love walking the strings…
