Honestly, it started as a joke. Samantha texted the group chat inviting anyone who wasn't heading home for the holidays to her apartment for dinner. The sarcasm was evident even through text.
Harley replied first. 'I'll be there, sounds better than my family.'
Soon the group chat was alive with replies.
'See you there, Samantha.'
'Do we need to bring food?'
'Ooh! I'll make a pie!'
'Not to toot my own horn but my mom taught me to make a pretty good turkey.'
'Everyone bring a dish and we should have enough for everyone.'
It was official, Samantha, Bethany, Cassy, Kyle, and Harley were going to have the best Thanksgiving meal ever.
When Thanksgiving day came Samantha's apartment was alive with hustle and bustle of five college students setting up for a meal.
"We need decorations." Blanche announced the moment she walked in the apartment. Soon the five students were attempting to follow a turkey drawing tutorial. Laughter filled the apartment at Kyle's drawing. Samantha learned that Bethany wasn't a bad artist.
They set the table with one paper turkey at each spot. After googling how to cut a turkey (Kyle knew how to cook one very well but cutting it was a lost cause) they began to eat.
"Let's do the common Thanksgiving thing and go around and say what we're thankful for." Samantha said. "I'm thankful for all the scholarships I won." She smiled at the group.
"I'm thankful that I finished that calculus class last semester." Blanche said loudly, holding her glass in the air. The others clinked their glasses against hers.
"Here, here." They all agreed.
"I'm thankful I stayed here with you guys." Harley said. "My family gets wild around the holidays, sometimes you just need a break." Bethany nodded in agreement.
"Plus it's more enjoyable here." She grinned. "My little cousins wouldn't have drawn a turkey that looked like an elephant." She bumped Kyle's shoulder. He scowled.
"It wasn't that bad!" He protested. Cassy held it up, everyone, including Kyle, burst into uncontrollable laughed.
"Okay so it's pretty bad." Kyle admitted. "I'm thankful that I'm not getting an art degree." He joked.
"You wouldn't have gotten accepted into art school." Cassy told him. He shrugged.
"I'm thankful for good friends that will support my descisions." Cassy raised their class in the air. A chorus of 'awws' rang out from around the table.
"I'm thankful for Kyle's bad art skills." Bethany cheered. The others clapped.
"Glad to be your entertainment for the night." Kyle stood and bowed.
As the night began to wind down the five friends sat in the living room talking.
"I think this is the best Thanksgiving I've ever had." Samantha admitted. The others nodded.
"It's been so relaxing. No little kids running around." Harley sighed happily.
Bethany and Cassy nodded in agreement.
As the night became darker and later Kyle's head shot up. "Only twenty seven days until Christmas! Who's ready?" He asked loudly.
The group groaned good-naturally.
