Fiction Funny High School

A pin dropped, and we could hear it. Damn that cat. My father cleared his throat and we exhaled.

"Very...interesting news you have, Miry", he said. I looked down at my plate, half of the spaghetti lay there, the cream slowly getting dry, remaining untouched. I had no appetite now.

"I have some demands at work right now, so I will have to excuse myself early from dinner", I said as I stood. My father nodded, and as I walked past my sister I considered giving her a pat on the head. I gave in and more awkwardly gave her a pat. Her face was red, and you could see her face flush. I went to my room and closed the door.

About five minutes later I hear the shuffling outside my door, and I knew dinner had ended early. I could hear the clinking of dishes as Ma prepared to wash them, her famous spaghetti gone to waste. I relaxed in my chair, rethinking the conversation during dinner. I heard a soft know on the door and knew it was Miry.

"You can come in," I said. She opened the door and came in. Honestly, why does she think she needs that stuff? I asked myself. Looking at my sister I smiled a little and rebooted my computer.

"Was it that awkward?" she asked. I nodded.

Three days later, I was walking home. Miry was staying later in school, fulfilling her job as a student council person. My friends were rooting for her, as they did with me at my games. The evening was great, a soft breeze lifting my hair up. I walked to the mailbox and grabbed the mail. I saw a card with very sexual pictures of women and saw it was mailed for Miry. I flipped the back and saw words detailing everything. I had no interest in reading this and knew for a fact Ma would go livid. I decided to keep it for Miry. I ended up forgetting. Damn that cat.

A week now, it has been. When I came home that day after seeing the mail, I found out the cat broke my mug and lamp on my desk. I was walking down the street with a bag in my hand. I had to waste twenty-two dollars to buy a new lamp. I looked into the windows of a nice restaurant and saw one of my coworkers there, making a move on a guy sitting across from her. I took out my phone and took some pictures. My boss and coworkers would go wild over this. I put my phone back in my pocket and kept staring at her. She was wearing a deep red dress, and it wasn't doing a very good job of covering her. Her figure was truly attractive, and I could see the guy taking notice of that fact.

I came home closer to midnight, bleeding from my nose. It got broken by the guy. He lured her outside and was aggressively grabbing her. She thanked me when the cops got involved. I took the lamp out of the box and started assembling it. I opened a drawer on my desk and saw the envelope. Not today.

I woke up to the cat sleeping next to me. It was 5 a.m.

It's two weeks and three days now. I still haven't given her the envelope. Ma was in my room, bringing me a plate of eggs and bacon. I thanked her. I was about to eat the last piece of bacon but Miry came in looking worried.

"Can we go on a walk?" she asked. "Sure" I responded.

We walked to a park. Far from our house by twenty minutes. We were silent all the way. Once in a while, one would comment about the weather or school stuff. I saw children playing around and was reminded of my childhood. When I used to make fun of Miry, or she would make fun of me. I changed the things she said about things. Like short hair, so I grew it. Long nails and I cut them. Maybe that's what the awkward dinner announcement was about.

Did she suddenly remember my nasty comments? Hopefully not. Father would be disappointed. I was supposed to be someone she could look up to. Actually, it seems I have always looked up to her. Ironic. I kicked a pebble that was on the sidewalk as she guided me to a bench. We sat down and we were quiet for a time.

"So, about dinner that dinner from two weeks ago, wanna talk about it?" I asked. Her face flushed and I could see the embarrassment. Funny how she found the courage to tell Ma, Father, and me during that dinner.

"I-I don't really want that", she said. Well, this was a surprise.

"What do you mean you don't? Then why did you bring it up?" I asked, confused.

"Let me tell you the whole story first. I wasn't the one who, looked it up, I guess?" she said as if I was the one who knew or not. I did not. I nodded so she could keep going.

"Well, it was a week before that dinner. I was on my computer and went to the restroom. Cat got in my room and when I got back, she somehow opened a tab and searched that, and that was that. I quickly closed it before Ma came in, but I couldn't stop thinking about it." she sighed, took a breath, and kept going, "I mean, maybe before I thought about it, but I wasn't sure."

Well, that explained a lot. She was quiet now. So was I. Finally, I asked about the topic, with a sarcastic tone.

"Boobs? You really wanted to implant yourself boobs?" I laughed as her face slowly became red as to resemble a tomato. A tear escaped my eye, and I felt sentimental. "You know you're pretty just the way you are, actually, I know some guys who don't have the courage to ask you out" I told her.

Her face was curios and I knew she appreciated it. After a while she left and I was alone on the bench. I could see the ocean from there, and was slightly annoyed. Standing up, I picked up a rock on the pebble and threw it with all my might.

"Damn that Cat!!"
