It was a misty and chilly morning. I woke up suddenly, taking a moment to recollect my thoughts. I glanced at the blue clock on my light blue wall. Did I mention I loved the colour blue?
Anyway, where was I? Oh right! the clock said 6:30 a. m.! I walked over to the bathroom, gladly confining my bath to a simple splash of water and soap, and hurried out, struggling with my mackintosh.
It was the same weather as it has always been in Illinois in the winter - the season I liked the most because of the peaceful and serene scenery that filled me up to the brim with calmness. It was exceptionally cold today. I put my cold hands into my pocket and felt something hard inside. I took the thing out. It was a compact device with little colourful buttons on it labelled in strange writing, I couldn’t comprehend.
I thought it was just a play toy carelessly kept in my pocket by my little brother as I remembered him scouting for one of his toys yesterday. I pressed a green button and waited for something to happen. I walked a few more steps. Unexpectedly, I felt a wave of emerald green pulsating light wash over me. I felt pulled forward by an external and invisible source, as if 'The Invisible Man' was pulling me by my shirt's collar.
I immediately fell to my knees and was surprised to feel them sinking in the ground. I opened my eyes to see layers of sand stretching in front of me. Dazed, I turned around to see massive limestone gates with enormous walls seemingly stretching infinitely in both directions.
I looked at my watch. At first, I thought it was malfunctioning. It said 3:00 p. m. in Alexandria, EGYPT!!! I again closed my eyes, expecting to be back on the pedestrian sidewalk, taking my morning walk. The truth flooded into my head, "I've gone back in time. Into the pages of my History textbook. The little device was a time traveller! Oh! The remote!".
I suddenly remembered about the remote. I took it out and pressed an orange button as two menacing guards stepped up to me. I felt another wave wash over me in orange light, then, with a deafening splash, I landed into water.
As I tried to reach the shore, I saw a bullock cart pass by. I stopped the driver and realized that I was in the Renaissance period because of his attire and strange accent and had just crawled out of the Arno in Italy! I waited for my clothes to dry, then accompanied him to the city of Florence.
On reaching there, I was amazed to see the beautiful architecture. I had just seen Florence in paintings, not live! I quickly sought out the great Leonardo da Vinci's Workshop and showed him the remote. I explained to him the situation I was stuck in, after apologizing for barging in during one of his historic experiments. He sadly told me that he couldn't help and treated me like a stranger as he didn't believe me.
"He had a good reason not to!'", I murmured as I walked out, disappointed. In a frenzy, I pushed a black button and waited for the whole process to begin again.
I again landed in a desert with a cold climate. I got to know that I was in Mongolia and was almost trampled by a horde of horses being ridden on by none other than Genghis Khan himself!
I escaped a narrow death as I pushed a deep blue button and was transported to a beautiful ceremony and realized that I was standing in front of Queen Elizabeth I during her Coronation!
''Guards! Seize the boy!" she ordered, as I was pulled by a firm hand belonging to an elaborately dressed man and taken through beautiful and luxurious hallways until I was thrown rashly into a dirty, dark room lined with hay. Tired and helpless, I soon drifted off to sleep...
I awoke with a jerk. I expected to see the dungeons I was thrown in, but surprisingly, I was back in my bed!
I, then, understood that it all had been a dream! Ha! And I thought I was going crazy!!
I hurried down to the kitchen to help myself to some breakfast. I stopped in my tracks and gasped. What was that remote doing on my seat at the table??...
