A confidently posed bronze statue of General Gerald Musgrave stood in Applewood's square. His outstretched hand beckoned the townsfolk to remember their savior. Nearby, Emma watched him, frozen, notebook in her lap. She idolized her grandfather. To her, he was more than a man.
The general wasn't a savior in the biblical sense but a savior in the economic sense. He stopped the highway from being built miles away from the town, ensuring that travelers would never exit to shop the many stores and shops that lined the town's streets.
Shirley's voice from the historical society meeting still echoed in her head. "Your grandfather's solo effort saved our town from becoming a ghost town. Do you recall how he stood up to the board?"
She naturally remembered, learning the story from family stories. Musgrave rerouted the highway, saving Applewood. Emma envisioned him as tall, strong, and steady. He effortlessly ensured Applewood's survival.
A troubling thought worried her as she prepared her grandfather's commemorative speech. An old man at the library mysteriously pulled her aside. His claims of secret deals clashed with her image of him.
Rerouting the highway would have devastated Applewood's economy. The board didn't foresee the community impact of rerouting traffic nine miles away.
Applewood's survival hinged on the highway's constant flow of traffic, a vital artery bringing lifeblood to the town. He powerfully defended the town's future to the board.
Applewood fully supported him. Defeat meant their town's ruin.
A senior recounted a historical story to Emma. While others didn't, Emma's grandfather recognized Applewood's future potential. He also saw the town's possible demise if he didn't fight to keep the main traffic artery flowing close to it.
"Never let fear guide your decisions, Em," her grandfather had once told her, his hand resting gently on her shoulder. "Courage doesn't mean you're fearless. It means you act in spite of it."
That was the man she remembered—a man who had stood tall in the face of adversity, who had fought for Applewood with an unwavering determination.
Emma revered her grandfather.
His resolute boardroom defense was memorable. That moment of his bravery became a lasting memory.
But now, as the old man's words about her grandfather's shrewdness echoed in her mind, a shadow loomed over that perfect image.
He bought cheap farmland, then sold it expensively to the state for highway use. A sly smile and twinkling eyes accompanied his revelation.
Emma's grandfather's legacy lingered. His foresight in construction and real estate secured Applewood's and his own success. Or was it something else? How did he know where to purchase land and when?
That was new information for Emma. Described as selfless, her grandfather gave endlessly to Applewood.
The old man's words echoed as she wrote her speech. She questioned the complete truth of her grandfather's selflessness.
Emma disregarded the revelation. She remembered her grandfather's tireless fight to save Applewood. Inspired by her grandfather, she championed her community.
The old man's words haunted Emma's sleep. She was an honest and altruistic woman.
Emma awoke, determined to uncover her grandfather's secret. She went to the library, burdened by unanswered questions.
She aimed to debunk the old man's statement.
Emma found a hidden family history in old town records. She found proof he'd gotten rich selling the farmland.
Emma suspected that greed motivated her grandfather more than anything else.
Emma felt uneasy as she searched the dusty archives. Her grandfather's alleged fortune challenged her perception of him.
The papers revealed a side of her grandfather that she had never seen before - one filled with shrewd business decisions and a ruthless determination to succeed. There were whispers of backroom deals and underhanded tactics, all aimed at securing the best possible outcome for himself and his family.
Her grandfather's contradictions emerged in Emma's investigation. Tales of his generosity balanced stories of his ambition.
Emma found a hidden journal in her family's attic. The aged pages were difficult to read.
The story captivated Emma. Her grandfather found a strange device in a cave.
The journal described an unprecedented device. The intricate machinery defied explanation.
Emma felt uneasy studying the device's drawings and descriptions. A dark force worming into her family history triggered a deep primal fear.
Flipping through the journal, she stopped dead at a photograph. In the picture, her grandfather stood proudly next to the mayor, the device on his wrist unmistakable.
The device and cryptic notes stunned Emma, turning her world upside down. After his inconsistencies, she doubted him.
The archives yielded another eerie tale linked to the device. Documents included a smaller, related narrative.
Strange phenomena occurred on the grandfather's newly acquired land, and a chilling tale hinted at strange creatures and events.
The retirement home smelled antiseptic as Emma searched for anyone who remembered her grandfather's ranch.
Wind and rain lashed the gloomy nursing home as she entered. The clash of Lysol and decay set a grim scene.
Passing wheelchairs, Emma asked patients if they remembered her grandfather. Initial confusion yielded an unexpected discovery.
When she heard his account of strange skylights and unsettling sounds, Emma had a terrifying revelation: Something had happened there, but what?
Emma's investigation changed after a conversation. Her story featured a mysterious device found in a remote cave.
The pressing questions were: what was the device, and where was it located? Foreboding enveloped Emma.
Mystery surrounded her grandfather's past. The deeper she dug, the more precise the truth became. The speech was a few days away.
The attic was the logical place to investigate back at the old mansion. The house still felt haunted by its former resident, his travel souvenirs gathering dust and cobwebs on the walls.
He disappeared without a trace, leaving behind an unsolved mystery. The townsfolk whispered about his disappearance along with the strange lights at his ranch.
She struggled to put the pieces together.
Emma learned of his profitable ranch sale and concealed her knowledge of his insider information in her speech. The mystery of the lights and sounds remained. They built a statue to honor him. Why say anything to besmirch his character? Nobody was perfect, she reasoned.
As she stood before the crowd, Emma's voice carried across the auditorium, her words echoing off the back walls. Some were there for the genealogy part of the speech, their eyes filled with the dry, dull light of long-lost family history. Many were there to hear the story of Gerald Musgrave, the town's unofficial hero, whose tale of bravery and sacrifice was whispered in the hallowed tones of Applewood.
Emma noticed someone alone in the back. Hidden behind sunglasses, he slumped. The man's familiarity unnerved her. Despite her strong speech, she felt uneasy. Something was amiss.
As the crowd exited, the room echoed with many footsteps. Captivated, the audience lingered, thanking her.
She knowingly, warmly answered every question with a nod. The old man in the shadows caught her eye repeatedly. He patiently watched, waiting for his turn.
Emma's heart pounded; she stared, disbelieving. Removing his dark glasses, he revealed piercing blue eyes.
A sudden chill made her fear fainting. She realized this wasn't just any old man. No, this was General Gerald Musgrave in the flesh. Where the hell had he been?
"No, this can't be," she stammered, her voice barely audible above the pounding of her own heart. "Grandpa?"
Amused, the old man smiled and nodded slowly. "Yes," he said, his voice surprisingly strong. "You should be 130; how is this possible?"
Emma's mind raced as she tried to understand what she was seeing. She had spent countless hours researching General Musgrave's life, poring over every available document and artifact, yet she had never encountered any mention of his immortality.
"Grandpa, how?"
With a smile, he rolled up his sleeve, exposing the alien device. He removed the device and handed it to Emma.
As Emma stared in disbelief at the device in her hand, his words echoed through her mind. "Go, little one, live your life; find yourself," he said.
Trembling, she clutched the watch-like object, her heart pounding at the implications of his words. He calmly explained, as if it were commonplace, "You can either watch or tap the screen again to participate."
As if in a trance, General Musgrave uttered the fateful words that would forever alter her destiny: "Wearing this grants immortality, a blessing and a curse."
Tilting her head, she gazed into the depths of his icy blue eyes, noticing flecks of gray in the light. "What caused you to vanish without a trace?"
He glanced at her. "There were visitors not of this world at the ranch. They told me where to find this to see for myself what was possible. Once you start your journey, you will understand. Suffice it to say, this place is no longer home as you know it."
With her mind buzzing with potential, Emma realized she couldn't refuse this incredible opportunity. She took a deep breath, placed her hand on the device's dial, and visualized her destination with her eyes closed.
In the blink of an eye, Grandpa watched her disappear. Smiling, he turned to follow the voices from the other room where the speech had just ended.
The device hummed faintly as her thumb hovered over its surface. Her grandfather's voice echoed in her memory: "Courage doesn't mean you're fearless. It means you act despite the fright."
Everything changed. Instead of a place or time, Emma's mind held a soft, elusive memory, a fragment of a dream, fragrant with the scent of unknown flowers. A dream of adventure and romance, a dream every princess cherishes in her youth before reality sets in. A prince, astride a coal-black steed instead of a noble white horse, was part of the illusion about to manifest; the sound of its hooves drumming against the cobblestones was the first sign.
She opened her eyes to a golden meadow, the tall grass swaying gently in the breeze. The air was warm, alive with the hum of cicadas and the sweet scent of wildflowers. The sun hung low in the sky, casting the landscape in hues of amber and rose. Emma felt a strange sense of déjà vu as if she had stepped into a dream she had once forgotten.
The steady rhythm of hooves against the earth vibrated through the ground, a deep, resonant sound that made her heart pound.
With a gasp, she turned, her breath catching in her throat, and saw him, his eyes locked on hers. The man on horseback emerged from the horizon, a dark silhouette against the setting sun's fiery orange and purple hues. The soft earth muffled the sounds of his horse's hooves. He rode, his confidence as boundless as the plains themselves. Each movement echoed a life lived in harmony with the land, his presence a tangible link to a bygone era.
As he approached, Emma's breath caught. His dark hair fell in loose waves around his face, his sharp features softened by the sun's glow. His eyes—piercing and impossibly blue—locked onto hers, and in that moment, the world seemed to still.
He dismounted with a grace that left her stunned, and as he stepped closer, Emma felt the pull of something she couldn't explain. It wasn't just the man—it was the moment, the way it seemed to hold infinite possibilities, as though every choice she had ever made had led her here.
"You're not from here, are you?" he said, his voice deep and smooth, tinged with curiosity.
Emma shook her head, her fingers brushing the cool metal of the device still strapped to her wrist. "No," she replied softly. "I'm… still figuring out where I'm from."
The man tilted his head, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Then maybe you've come to the right place."
She felt a warmth spread through her, a sense of belonging she hadn't felt since before her journey began. For so long, she had been searching for answers about her grandfather, her place in Applewood, and herself. And now, standing here, she felt as though she had finally found what she didn't even know she had been looking for.
"What's your name?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
He hesitated as though weighing whether to answer. Finally, he said, "Call me Ezra."
The name felt ancient, yet familiar, as though it carried a history all its own. Emma smiled, the tension in her chest easing for the first time in days. "I'm Emma."
Ezra extended his hand, palm up, and she hesitated only for a moment before placing hers in his. His touch was warm and grounding, and she felt the weight of her uncertainty begin to lift.
"You carry something powerful," he said, his gaze flicking briefly to the device on her wrist. "Something that doesn't belong only to you."
Emma nodded. "It belonged to my grandfather. He… he gave it to me."
Ezra's expression softened. "And what will you do with it?"
The question hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. Emma thought of her grandfather, his choices, and the sacrifices and mistakes that had shaped his life. She thought of Applewood, the town she loved, and the people who still whispered his name with reverence. And then she thought of herself—the girl who had always admired him but was now ready to step out of his shadow.
"I think it's time I live for myself," she said finally, her voice steady.
Ezra's smile deepened, and he gave a slight nod as though he had been waiting for her to say those exact words. "Good. Then let's see where that takes you."
Without another word, he led her toward his horse, helping her into the saddle before climbing up behind her. The device on her wrist hummed faintly, its gears glowing softly in the fading light. As the horse began to move, Emma felt the wind in her hair, the rhythm of the earth beneath her, and a sense of freedom she had never known.
For the first time in her life, she wasn't looking back. She wasn't chasing her grandfather's legacy or trying to uncover the secrets of his past. She was moving forward into the unknown, into an entirely new future.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold, Emma leaned into Ezra's warmth and smiled. The device pulsed gently against her skin, reminding her of the infinite possibilities ahead.
This wasn't the end of her journey. It was only the beginning.

Scott, I enjoyed reading this very much. It feels like there is so much potential in the Emma storyline. I want to know more! I love the way she wakes up in a new world. I love the biblical allusion in Ezra the helper. In a more general sense, I admire the way that you often work to inhabit a female character. That is hard, and it takes courage. Thank you for this compelling story. Best, Ari

Thank You, Ari; you are probably the only person who picked up on Ezra. :) These stories will be part of a book of short stories called Ephemera, Tales of the Fleeting, and Profound Vol II. I am not limited to 3000 words in the book, so I can take the story further and make it a novella or add another chapter. -Best

Interesting story. So much of it was Emma's warring back and forth with herself about her grandfather's real nature, I wasn't sure where you were going at first, but you got there. Gave me a lot of different things to wonder about.

Like any small town, gossip takes on a life of its own. The more people try to stay to themselves, the more the locals invent things. Gerald is a genuine, altruistic guy when he meets the aliens. His life then takes a turn, which ends up being Emma's future. The idea of the prompt was to leave the protagonist's fate in question.

And so the adventure begins...

This is wonderful! Hooked me right away with the intriguing situation that kept growing about the grandfather. I had to find out! Then the twist where he is in the courtroom and the main character's new journey in life, wearing the device. Skillful writing, brisk pace, good momentum, clever. Very enjoyable read!
