Thriller High School

The Demon Plague

“It's the last one Edward! You can do it!” Harry yelled as his best friend, Edward, hesitated to shoot the last demon.

The Demon Plague was finally over after two terrible years of terrorism. The Demon Plague started in 1710, in Southern Africa after a traditional ritual to rid off demons went wrong. The ritual opened a portal for demons to leave the underworld and roam the Earth as humans. The Demons terrorized humankind, from corrupt world leaders to farmers. The only way to get rid of the Demons and stop them from taking over the world was for the chosen one to shoot them. Only the chosen one could accurately shoot the Peacekeeper. The Peacekeeper was a special shotgun that would send the Demons back to the underworld.

“Woah, look at this one Zelda.” Sidon said in amazement as he pointed to the enormous statue of Edward Walsh holding the Peacekeeper, in The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

“Hey! look we have the same last name.” Zelda responded as she looked at the shiny plaque at the bottom of the statue.

The museum was full of other excited tourists buzzing around like bees in a beehive. They are enjoying the last day of their trip to New Mexico before heading back home to Colorado. The summer was almost over and they would have to return to school. They spent the rest of the day viewing other attractions and sight-seeing.

Sidon and Zelda met in the Lobby of their hotel bright and early the next morning. Sidon put their luggage in the back of their taxi and headed to the airport. They boarded their flight, and among the passengers was a crying baby. Its cries sounded like those of a hyena.

“What's wrong with that baby? I've never heard a baby cry like that before.” Sidon whispered to Zelda.

“I don't know, maybe it's broken.” Zelda joked as Sidon let out a small giggle.

They got off their plane as usual but walked into an airport full of chaos. It was filled with cries from lost children, mother's running around frantically searching for their kids. Others drag behind them their luggage as they make a run to the exit. You could barely hear over the panic of the travelers a man’s voice on the intercom trying to tell everyone to remain calm. Nevertheless, his efforts were disregarded as people crashed into one another trying to leave.

“What’s going on?” Sidon said confused and panicked, as something was obviously wrong.

“THE DEMONS ARE BACK!” a young woman yells as she points at a Demon whose eyes are now glowing bright red, and veins jumping out of his neck, as he resists the urge to kill the young woman standing in front of him.

Sidon is frozen in fear, as he is looking at the Demon standing in front of the young woman. Everyone around him turns into a blur. He wants to save the woman, but he is completely paralyzed. Suddenly, he sees Zelda grab the woman’s wrist and rush toward him. Zelda now holding the young woman and Sidon’s wrists are dashing out of the airport.

“Are you ok?” Zelda asks the young woman as they try to catch their breath.

“Yes, I’m- I’m fine. Thank you!” the young woman stutters as she is coming out of the state of shock.

Outside of the terminal everyone is driving around frantically trying to leave as quickly as possible. The rental cars are flying out of the lot, Sidon and Zelda have to leave now but forgot to order an uber when they landed. They decide to start running away frantically. They both call their families as the news spreads to the rest of Denver that there are Demons among them. Sidon’s mom picks them up. She drops Zelda off in her driveway and makes her way home. Zelda is greeted by her family, her mom has tears in her eyes, and her dad's voice is shaky. Sidon was rushed inside.

After dinner, the school district announced that classes were canceled until the demons we're under control. Zelda and Sidon are both very good students, Sidon is the quarterback for the school's football team and Zelda is the captain of the soccer team. Not only are they athletic they are also very smart. Zelda and Sidon are great examples of the ideal student, to say the least.

Zelda calls Sidon in the morning and researches the demons. They find that the Peacekeeper is in the possession of the chosen one or Edward’s descendants. Sidon shares that the Peacekeeper glows green when pointed at a Demon. Zelda adds that the demons have a mark on their forehead that will glow green when the Peacekeeper is pointed at them.in the outskirts of her city. Apparently not all of the Demons we're gone after their last attack, there are 100 of them left. Government officials have closed down all types of transportation in an effort to keep them concentrated in the city.

“I hope they can find the descendant soon, so we can go back to normal.” Sidon says.

“Sidon, breakfasts ready!” His mom hollered from the kitchen.

“Hey I have to go, you can come over later, and we do some more research.” Sidon offered Zelda.

“Ok, I’ll go over later this afternoon!” Zelda says before hanging up. As Zelda is going down the stairs to the kitchen she hears a loud knock at the front door.

“Are you Zelda Walsh?” The man was as tall as a giraffe and very muscular.

“Yes.” Zelda replies confused. The man then pulls his FBI badge out of his pocket.

“We need to ask you some questions. Don't worry you're not in trouble.” The man says as Zelda's face fills with fear

“Ok?” Zelda leads them into the living room, as her Dad gives her an affirmative nod to let them in.

Zelda is questioned about her ancestors.

“How am I supposed to know that. I wasn't alive like three centuries ago?” The man is asking her about Edward Walsh.

“Look, you are the next chosen one, and your family knows where the Peacekeeper is. Where is it” The man demands.

“Just because we have the same last name it does not make me the chosen one, and plus we don't own guns.” Zelda says not believing the man.

“We have traced down the descendant down to you. We believe that Edward kept a diary where he wrote down the location of the Peacekeeper before he passed away.” The man continued reassuring Zelda she is the chosen one.

“We have a lot of boxes filled with old books in the attic, I've never gone through the boxes but that's the only place said diary could be.”  Zelda was starting to believe the man.

Maybe it wasn't a coincidence that we share the same last name, Zelda thought to herself.

It's dark in the attic, and you can see all the dust flying around in the sunlight that comes through one little circular window facing towards the street.

“Deputy Miller, we found it!” one of the officers calls out as he holds up an antique book. It has a red leather cover, and its pages are wrinkled.

After Deputy Miller finds the location of the Peacekeeper in the diary, Zelda changes the plans she had with Sidon and instead invites him to help her retrieve the Peacekeeper. They arrive at the park indicated in the diary and Sidon starts to dig it up. Five minutes before the sunsets they have found the Peacekeeper. Zelda did not feel she could save her city. She grabbed the gun and shot at one of the trees to prove her accuracy, but she missed it.

“How could that be?” one of the officers asked.

“Zelda, you need to believe in yourself, you can do it,” Sidon assured her.

Zelda grabbed the gun and shot at the tree again. This time she hit it. Zelda felt proud of herself and gained more confidence. While she is aiming at the tree again she sees a little green glow in the darkness behind the trees, then the Peacekeeper starts to glow green. The sun has set and the darkness is flooding the park. The Night lights in the park start to flicker, then they shut off. More and more green dots start to appear. They are surrounded by the Demons.

“It's your time to shine.” Deputy Miller said, trying to hide his panic.

Zelda acted on impulse and shot at the first dot she saw. The ground opened up and took the Demon back to the underworld. Sidon encouraged Zelda and she began to get rid of the green dots one by one. Zelda shot at the closest Demon in an effort to keep them from making the circle smaller. Zelda's adrenaline was high, she had never held a gun, much less shot one, in her life. Sidon, Deputy Miller, and the officers tried to hide their shaking as the Demons got closer. The demons were less than five meters away from them in every direction. Zelda got quicker with every shot, the Demons started to feel insecure. All 100 of them were gone within the next 3 minutes. They let out a sigh of relief and had a brief celebration. Zelda held on to Sidon a little longer, they blushed all the way home. The next day the city celebrated Zelda, and everything went back to normal.
