"Rain, rain go away,"
"You don't even spend time with your only child, James!"
"Come again another day."
"Don't bring this up now, because you're mad at the fact that I am- let's face Lydia-UNHAPPY!!"
"She needs her father!! Why don't you care?"
"Little Olivia wants to play. Rain, Rain"-
"She is NOT MY daughter, Dammit!!"
"Don't say that. Don't you dare say that."
"You know,"-
"We...were going through a rough patch James.."-
-"What you did"
-But I did not nor have I EVER cheated on you. Don't you dare insinuate such nonsense. Do you hear me?"
"Rain, Rain, go to Spain"
"I'm leaving. End of story. Get the hell out of my way, Lydia!"
"What about Livvy?! What am I supposed to tell our daughter?"
His voice was muffled, but just loud enough to hear the cold words leave his mouth.
"I want nothing to do with YOUR daughter."
. . . . . . . .
15 YEARS LATER
"Steve, I'm takin a 10!" I yelled, while walking towards the break room.
After grabbing my jacket, I proceeded to walk out the back door. Just before the door closed, I heard my boss, Steve begin to yell something my way, but the door shut just in time. With a long sigh, I began my usual walk around the store, while smoking a cigarette. I found my way to the near by curb I always sat at.
It was beautiful out. It had just finished raining. Every tree radiated a lush green. The wet grass was more vibrant than ever.
I closed my eyes, not wanting to leave this paradise. The smell of the earth after it rained, loomed over me. I was in love with Rain.
"Hey!"
My peace came to an abrupt end from the sound of Steve's call.
I jolt open my eyes, to find Him towering over me, with a disappointed look in his eyes. I despised this look.
Steve was normally such a "jolly" character, if you will. He was always making a joke about something, making people laugh, or even just making himself laugh. Steve was in his mid-50's. He was well built, almost like an old lumberjack. He was always rocking a scruffy look, never without a flannel shirt. I started working at Steve's convenience store when I was 15. He's been a real help to me.
I knew the reason He was upset right now was the fact that I was smoking. We agreed when I first started working for Him, that He would not allow any of those "cancer sticks" as He called them, to ruin my life.
"What did we talk about, Kid?" He questioned, snatching the cigarette from me.
"What do you mean, Steve?" I asked sarcastically.
"Nope. We're not doing this. Give it up." He said motioning me to give him the remainder of cigarettes in my pocket.
I looked away, wondering if I ran from him, how fast would he catch up to me.
" I'm not playin, Kid. " His voice was gentle, but stern.
"C'mon Steve!" I complained while reluctantly handing over the last 3 cigarettes I had, and shoving them into his hand.
He then sat down beside me.
"Why you doin this to yourself, huh? You are a bright girl. You're intelligent. This right here"- He said putting the cigarette in front of me.
"Is stupid! Are you stupid Olivia?" He questioned.
With a dramatic sigh, I leaned back onto the wet grass, not wanting to respond.
"I want an answer." He pressed.
"No! I am not stupid, there! Happy now?"
"Just enough to write a song about it, Kid" He joked.
As I stared at the grey clouds above me, I realised how small I was. How small we all were. Compared to this world, Humans were so so small.
"We're so small, Steve." I said, barely above a whisper.
I heard him let out a long sigh. Wondering what He might say to that, I sat up to look at Him.
He was looking straight ahead. It was as though He had alot on his mind.
"Yeah, Kid. We're all small." He then stood up and began walking back to the store. Before going inside he turned to look at me.
"Until we do something big." And with that He disappeared inside.
. . . . . . .
That night I couldn't sleep. My mind always kept me awake. Steve's words echoed in my head.
What did he mean? Until We do something big? Like what? That was such a broad statement. Until we do something big for ourselves? Or until we do something big for others?
"What the hell does that even mean?" I mumbled to myself, as I stumbled out of bed, not able to sleep.
I decided to go for a drive to clear my head. The streets of Seattle were clogged. There was so many cars in front of me, I couldn't even see where it started. It was loud too. People were honking back and forth, shouting profanity to one another. I looked at my car clock.
2:15AM.
Confused, I looked back at the traffic I was stuck in. This was not normal. The streets of Washington maintained some traffic, but nothing like this. Curious as to what was going on, I turned on my radio, to see if there was anything on, explaining this unusual traffic.
"Yes, this just in. You're not gonna believe this Tom."
I turned up my radio to hear exactly what all the drama was about.
"Did I hear that correct, Nancy? Did you say a Lightning bolt is stuck in a tree?"
That's right, Tom. A lightning bolt! It's insane, it's almost as if the lightning just, got stuck! I'm completely at a loss for words right now! This is insane!!!"
"What the hell?" I breathed. A lightning bolt? How was that even possible?
Immediately, I jump out of my car and look to the sky, like many others were now doing. The bolt was closer than I thought. I could see the light from behind a tall building.
"Until we do something big?" I questioned myself. Was this something I needed to do? Something I needed to see? Without giving myself any time to rethink, I snatched my jacket out of the car and leaving my car exactly where it was, since the traffic wasn't moving any time soon. And with that, I took off running.
I'd never ran so fast in my entire life. I felt as though, my legs were on fire! I ran through the traffic, dodging people left and right. I don't know what it was, but I needed to see this lightning bolt. I felt like my life depended on seeing this lightning bolt.
Any moment I could feel myself getting weak, I could see that I was just moments away from seeing the bolt, it's like the thought of it, renewed my strength and I kept on running.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the building where I had to saw the bolt shining from. I dropped to my knees from exhaustion. Doing everything I could to catch my breath, I felt my body trembling. Feeling more weak than I've ever felt in my life, I began walking towards this light.
My jaw dropped in awe. It was exactly how the reporter explained it. It was as if the lightning was frozen. It just didn't retract. I couldn't stop my body from trembling. It was uncontrollable. I was completely mesmerized by the sight.
There were a few dozen people surrounding the lightning. They were all trying to figure out what to do. There was a group of women taking selfies in front of it.
Everything was moving in slow motion. I could see them all talking, but I couldn't hear anything. It felt like my body was floating. I felt scared. Was no one else feeling this?
"Come closer, Olivia"
The voice startled me. I couldn't tell where it was coming from, but the only thing in front of me was the lightning.
"Touch the bolt, Olivia" the voice was echoing through my entire body.
I felt myself begin to hyperventilate. Hot tears began running down my face. I didn't what to do or who was speaking to me.
"Olivia!" The voice got louder.
"Who are you?!?'' I screamed to the bolt. Everyone around me, was now staring at me. Apparently, I was definitely the only one hearing this.
"Touch the bolt, Oliva!" The voice yelled.
"Why? Who are you? Tell me who you are!"
"Do it now!" The voice yelled even louder.
I screamed, tears running down my face. I began running to the bolt. I heard people screaming behind me. 3 officers began running after me. I returned my focus back to the bolt feeling its heat, as I got closer. I stopped right in front of it.
"Lady, get back here IMMEDIATELY!" Everyone was shouting at me. I waited to hear the voice.
Now, just inches away from the bolt, I whispered.
"Who are you?"
"Touch the bolt, Olivia"
I screamed with anger, not receiving the answer I wanted.
And with that I slammed my hands onto the bolt. The light that I felt exploded before my eyes, sending me flying back a good 30 feet.
Everything was blurry at this point. The only thing I could hear were my ears ringing. I could feel my eyes beginning to close. People were running over to me. I could hear echoes, but I couldn't make out what anyone was saying. Then everything went black.
. . . . . . . . .
"Olivia?"
I heard a familiar voice call my name. As I opened my eyes, I was greeted by the bright light, someone was shining in my eyes. I strained to see who this was, while squinting from the pain.
"Olivia, my name is Dr. Thelstin. Can you hear me?" This voice was different from the one I had just heard.
"You're in the hospital, sweetie. You're okay, alright? Can you tell me how you're feeling?'
"I'm..I'm okay." The words felt like knives coming out of my throat.
"Very good, honey. Do you know who this is?"
I looked in her direction. Standing next to her was the voice, I'd heard before. It was Steve.
I felt myself let out what I thought was a small chuckle. It was really nice to see him.
"Yes." I responded with a sigh.
"Very good! I'm going to go get you some water, okay sweet heart? You just talk with your friend for awhile."
After the Doctor left, I could see Steve begin to walk closer to my bedside. He looked afraid. He looked like he was about to cry.
"Are you ok, Kid?" He choked.
"I'm..fine, Steve" I breathed.
"What the hell were you doing? Huh?" he fumed.
"Did no one ever teach you what a dumb thing it is to play outside during a storm, let alone touch lightning? What the hell is a matter with you, huh? Answer me, Kid. You could've been killed, you know that?"
" I just..wanted''
"What? You wanted what, Olivia?"
"I just.."
"What?" He growled.
"I.." My voice was beginning to tremble.
"C'mon, Kid!" He shouted.
"I JUST WANTED TO DO SOMETHING BIG!!" I screamed.
BOOM! A loud crash of thunder happened right as I finished speaking. It began pooring rain and lightning was flashing everywhere in the sky.
I looked back at Steve who was staring at me with fear in his eyes.
"What is it, Steve?" I asked, now afraid too.
"You, you, you're, Kid" He stuttered and began trembling.
"What is it?" I cried.
"Look at you!" He yelled.
I looked down at my body. I was floating off of my bed. Confused, I looked outside. Rain drops right out my window were floating.
I began to panic.
"What's happening?" I yelled.
Steve was silent.
"STOP!!!!!!!" I screamed.
With that, I fell back to my bed. The rain drops fell to the ground the lightning and thunder ceased. The clouds began clearing up. The sun began to shine. Within seconds, it was a clear sunny, blue sky day.
"What the?"

You had me thinking Steve was Livvy's father, and she doesn't know. I like the surreal aura of the story.
