Speculative Urban Fantasy Contemporary

"We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you breaking news from around the world. At precisely eleven minutes past the hour, a countless host of angels appeared—everywhere."

The generally stoic and business-like anchor woman had grown to loathe her role as a harbinger of bad news and she herself was surprised when, giggling with relief, those impossible sounding words scrolled across the teleprompter. "Please . . . don't misunderstand my emotions," she ad-libbed with an astonished grin. "I've never felt such intense joy. It means so much to me to be one of the voices sharing this unprecedented news, though we have it on good authority that everyone watching this message now, is fully aware of the miracle that occurred earlier today."

Captivated by the brilliant enormity of what they were seeing, the world had stood gobsmacked by a new reality that few saw coming. It was an event that people of all walks of life had been predicting for thousands of years, but most of them got it wrong. It was a prophecy that had been debated through time by the greatest of minds, and even they were truly clueless as to what deeds would separate sinners and saints when Gabriel finally sounded his triumphant horn. Turns out, divine forgiveness doesn't come with any strings attached; it applies to every single soul.

I had been one-third of the way through teaching my Tai Chi class on that warm January morning when, at 11:11, a solitary music note swelled through the ether. Later agreed upon by musical savants as a trumpet playing a pitch perfect F♯5, the invisible source of the crystal clear tone seemed to originate from the western sky. Our class was gathered beneath a large ficus tree on the rolling lawn of my neighborhood park when the angels appeared all around us, brightness blotting out the background. Their glow resembled bio-luminescent water lapping at the shore of a midnight beach.

Partially paralyzed, people stared wide-eyed, turning their heads just slightly from left to right then up and down to take in the vast spectacle before them. It was like a pause button had been pushed on life. We all hung on to every ethereal word as the angels spoke in unison, each one making eye contact with their designated person on the planet. Napping babies woke up in quiet wonder at the trumpet's blowing, and surgical patients deep inside the abyss of anesthesia awoke for the show then drifted right back under.

Filling the atmosphere, promises of unity encircled the globe instantaneously for all to hear, wherever they were. The chorus of voices was broadcast in a way that required no microphones or cameras. If you were human—you heard this message and you saw the hosts who delivered it. Denial was impossible. The seven hundred-plus megahertz vibration level of the angels' voices enveloped each person's Spirit with the familiar resonance of our forgotten beginning, before our souls incarnated onto earth.

The angels declaration was forever etched in my mind: "Bless the ones who cherish the meek and mild souls of Mother Earth. Bless the ones with unwavering reverence for both flora and fauna, those who ensure the circle of life on this beautiful planet will continue long into the future. Bless those who encourage curiosity about the cosmos and for seeking your place within it. Bless the darkness inside of those who have acted against the will of their Spirit. May you all feel your souls lighten and brighten with the glow of knowing that the tides of humanity's evolution will rage nevermore."

Unlike the prediction of panic and mayhem everyone knew so well, fire and brimstone were absent from the incident. In place of the chaos that was supposed to either damn our souls or reward our Spirits, mass serenity fell across the lands. The miracle was finally upon us all. The only cameras that caught the event were security and CCTV. Scrutinized afterward by thousands of experts, the recorded footage confirmed the mesmerized state of humanity. The angels, however, remained invisible to every lens around the world. And it was the absence of their image that solidified their existence to every human on our planet. Not one person, anywhere, denied witnessing the event. The truth of our existence sent a wave of relief through the core of every being.

As the message made its way through the dense and simple minds of people, truth and remembrance of our celestial roots consumed our hearts. Fear was replaced with curiosity. Anger dissolved into empathy. Mistrust melted into a pool of understanding and acceptance. Most important, inside the soul of each mortal—ego let go of the reins. Many, many people were compelled to write down the angels' words after the event and while everyone compared notes via social media platforms of all kinds, not one discrepancy was found among them regardless of the language it had been delivered in. No one doubted what was happening, nor did anyone try to disprove it as a hoax or a malevolent mind game. It was truth, and everyone knew it. Not a day goes by that I don't hear the echo of their message within my Spirit.

They said: "Each and every one of you volunteered to be here at this moment in history when the eyes of mankind finally see, as one, beyond the threshold of the third dimension. Our unified presence will purify your hearts today and we bestow the Beatitude gift of divine sight upon you, now and forever—revealing the shield that keeps the fourth dimension hidden from your eyes. No longer will the shadow spirits threaten you, for their transparency is now on display for all to see. Religion will cease to divide people. Instead, spiritual beliefs will unite ideologies to a common purpose: Love. The errors of your ways cannot be undone, nor can they be repeated. Because of this, you will see, hear, and feel an exponential change in human nature for the greater good of all."

The shift was palpable, as if Mother Earth herself had expelled all of the oppressive energy of fear and anger from her very roots—pushed it up through dirt, grass, concrete, and steel. Pushed it through each chakra, from sacral to crown, of every person on the planet. When the masses let go a collective exhale that day, it seemed as though gravity had released her grip. My bare feet were firmly planted on the ground, toes splayed and digging into the soft grass, yet my body felt weightless.

I took the deepest breath of my life, filling my lungs, my back, and my belly with angelically charged oxygen. I held the enormous breath in as it traveled along nerve pathways and synapses from the tips of my toes to every hair on my head. The sensation was difficult to describe and we all experienced the cleansing process in slightly different ways, but the consensus was that something akin to a slow-motion electromagnetic pulse had neutralized the massive amounts of negative energy stored in every single human body.

The event caused an immediate correction to the imbalance between soul and Spirit. Within just a few days, ill-perceived priorities were replaced with meaningful pursuits. The world went through a quick reorganization. A few weeks later, people had abandoned the grind of toiling for money, trading their misdirected lives of ego-driven goals for lives dedicated to their Dharma: the unique and true way of serving both themselves and others. A New York Times cartoon likened it to the world as a Rubik's Cube in the hands of a champion solver, spinning the colors in myriad directions that appear random but prove miraculous. I thought of it more like a spider's web that had been swiftly reconfigured to connect the delicate threads of humanity, providing newfound pathways between kindred souls while severing the tethers of incongruent pursuits.

Dubbed by the media as a form of "purification," the angel's en-masse presentation was proven to have eliminated fear energy from every cell in our bodies. In turn, our personal vibration was raised to much higher levels allowing us to see the invisible beings who've been beside us all along. With hordes of fancy equipment, scientists have continued to measure the level of vibration humans are maintaining, and on average people went from a rate of one hundred megahertz or lower (prior to the purification), to a steady average afterward between five and six hundred megahertz. Love, joy, and peace reside in this emotional-energy range . . . far out of fear's reach.

There would be no forgetting what took place that day. After their initial concert-like contact with us, the light beings could only be seen when you focused your attention on them, talked to them directly, or called upon them silently. Otherwise, they remained invisible to us. Our new, higher vibration is still limited by the capacity of our brains to process fourth dimension information, so the angels must cross through the shield whenever they appear to us on earth. Humans were not given the ability to cross the shield or move through the fourth dimension. One could, however, see into it, like looking through a stained-glass window, as long as you focused with pure intention on it.

Unlike the angels who reside mostly in the higher dimensions, shadow spirits dwell in the fourth dimension and are now very visible to our simple brains due to their incredibly low vibration rate. For this simple reason, fear has gone from acting as our adversary to becoming our advisor for examining and uniting the desires of one's soul and Spirit. Revealing the frailty and powerlessness of fear was quickly speculated by many psychologists and theologists to be a powerful turning point in human evolution. The gift of divine sight that we have received has, indeed, been a two-fold blessing: shadow energy can no longer hide in the darkness, and the angels can now be seen and spoken to whenever and wherever we want.

The angels had explained that their 'Oath to Free Will' would still be enforced by the timeless One—that's how they refer to the most divine deity we call God, Shiva, Buddha, Allah, Yahweh, or Akal Murat among others. So, unless we initiate contact, the angels will leave us mostly alone except under life-threatening circumstances. And even then, they'll step aside if our chosen exit time has arrived.

This was a significant piece of information that the angels had given us about the predetermined end of our lives on earth. They told us how we came here with three option dates to leave. Each voluntary soul who decides to condense and live in a human vessel selects its "return flight" Home before beginning its earthly assignment. The effect of this revelation alleviated the ancient uncertainty we've all feared: Death. After the purification, every human knew beyond a doubt that death was nothing more than a doorway to another world.

The celestial messengers' closing chorus resounded with faith, a steady rise and fall of intensity giving the decree a lyrical quality. "Remember always—we walk among you, we listen to you. We feel your energy and you will feel our presence forevermore. Never hesitate to ask us for help, for guidance, for healing, or for happiness. As you adjust to your newfound peace, as you cultivate joy and engage in the reciprocity of real unconditional love, give thanks every day for the blessing of having a life—the most sacred gift of all."

The trumpet, which had been whispering the same F♯5 note behind their words, elevated to a piercing crescendo as we saw the angels fade from sight. Wasting no time to verify their promise, in the first moment of pure silence I had called out, "Sachiel! Are you here?"

Appearing like fog on a breeze, the luminous angel—who had been sent to save me from a deadly brain tumor twenty years earlier—moved through the shield to stand before me. The love emanating from this stunning being overwhelmed my heart and tears of gratitude poured down my cheeks. My legs were shaking as I sank to the ground, eyes locked on the angel. I didn't know what to say. Words couldn't possibly convey the depth of my emotions.

Sachiel knew this and he said, "Dearest child, your journey as a volunteer was too important for us to let fear manifest to lethal levels in the vessel of your body. I materialized before you on that street corner long ago as an invocation and a validation to buoy your faith in the ethereal world. You remained faithful to the Volunteer's Oath while never knowing the details of it, and the angels are grateful for your dedication, in spite of the challenges you have faced. Preparing the souls of earth was a monumental task that owes much of its success to the thousands of volunteers who, like you, have always known that a great and powerful purpose called their name."

I felt his truth. Holding out his hand to help me up, I placed my hand in his. Delicate, fizzy energy stirred the hairs on my arm and tickled the bones in my hands like a friendly electrical charge. Before that day, I was prepared to live this life with no universal confirmation of my faith in the angels. I imagine I was not alone in feeling that way. We all know the truth now, and the world—thankfully—will never be the same again.

Entering writing contests was my New Years Resolution this year. It feels really good to cross the first threshold of that promise to myself. I'd love to hear about any #angel experiences y'all have had, or think maybe you've had. While this story is a work of fiction, I truly saw the angel on the streetcorner who warned me about my brain tumor. I am a #believer - are you?
