Part 1, Lukas
Lukas rolled his dark brown eyes at his friend. Kota was practically leaping with joy, his smile filling that cold aching hole in Luke’s heart every time he saw it. Kota’s curly brown hair bounced along with him.
Though Luke knew he couldn’t really hide his emotions from Kota, who could read people with only a glance of his dark brown eyes, he still tried to hide how fun it was to hang out with him, through scowls and glares. It made no difference to Kota Though.
“I will destroy you.” Kota spoke boldly, his distinguished eyebrows furrowing in his determination to beat Lukas in smash bro’s. Even world heroes who fight battles everyday need their down time.
“Yeah, because a pink blob is gonna beat Ganondorf.” Luke smirked as he saw Kota hover over Kirby. He stretched his arms out, his brown jacket lifting with his torso, his blue jeans sprawling outward in front of him. The small white couch creaking at the added weight.
“Wha- Kirby is a peak super hero! He could easily defeat GOD!” His tone was defensive, like someone had just threatened his entire family.
“Well, Ganondorf is higher than god sooo.” Kota smacked him on the shoulder with a smile. Luke couldn’t help but let out a light laugh. It was a rare sight to see. Someone so closed off and grumpy smiling like a dork and laughing.
The round started, and before Luke could even react Kota was already beating him into the ground. It took less than thirty seconds to end the game with Kirby winning. Kota jumped up and gave Luke a smug look.
Luke, frustrated, put his entire hand on Kota’s face, and pushed him away, Grumbling a bit, “beginners’ luck.”
“I’ve been playing for three years now.”
“Well, I have a faulty controller then.” Luke shrugged, looking out the small window next to the couch instead of at Kota, his brown flat hair swayed with his head, he folded his broad arms. Kota giggled.
“Kirby is god, I actually have a shrine of him at my house that I pray to like every night.” He joked.
“Yeah, I don’t doubt it.” Luke said, finally looking at Kota with a smirk.
Kota rolled his eyes, sitting down next to Luke with that warm smile, “you wanna watch a movie instead?”
Luke shrugged, “why not?”
Part 2, Dakota
Luke sat like a statue, straight up and down. He couldn’t blame him though. The wings underneath Lukes’s jacket must make it hard to get comfortable. There were those moments where he’d take off the jacket and show his beautiful brown and amber wings that matched his hair. Though those moments were usually during battle with people dying, but even then the soft reflection oof light of those feathers made him even more majestic than he already was.
Kota relaxed on the small white couch in the living room, the room illuminated with a soft blue glow as the TV went on and on about something Kota wasn’t really paying attention to. His mind was more focused on Luke. Glancing at him occasionally, wishing he would glance at him just the same, but he never did. Not once.
Finally Luke took off his jacket. Revealing his graceful wings as he got comfortable, wrapping his wings around himself and curling up. Kota blushed lightly as Luke looked at him for the first time since the movie started, catching him staring. Kota immediately looked away.
“What was that about?” he asked, his Gaze beating into Kota’s soul.
Kota panicked for a second, “Nothing. Your wings are just beautiful.” He said after the long awkward pause, only making it more awkward.
“Uh huh, and my mom loves me. What is that really about?”
“No, your wings really are beautiful.” He looked at him when he said it, Taking a long breath to calm his heart.
Luke, thankfully, shrugged and left it alone. His gaze going back to the TV. Kota pulled a small dark blue blanket over him, then the guilt settled in. he had just lied to Luke, Kota was probably the only person who he relied on, who he went too when he was having a bad day, and he could’ve just broke that guys trust.
“I lied.” Kota said instinctively, cursing himself internally, “its not just your wings.”
Luke looked over at him. the usual intense stare of his amber eyes making Kota’s heart flutter, “what do you mean?”
“I mean…I wasn’t just looking at your wings.” Kota shrugged, His heart beat echoing in his ears, “I haven’t been completely honest for a while.”
“well spill it.” He spoke, sitting up a bit more.
A long awkward pause fell over them for a long awkward moment, “i…like guys.” He said simply, “and I figured it out because of you…”
Part 3, Lukas
A thousand feelings were going through his mind. Happiness, confusion, fear, panic. Was it everything Lukas hoped for? Yes, but the fear of loosing him to a bad relationship, making mistakes and messing it all up cracked in between his facial expression.
“what?!” he said, too harshly than he would’ve liked it.
Kota flinched, and the guilt sunk into him faster then a dog chasing after a ball, “Lets just pretend I didn’t say anything.” He said quickly, his French accent slipping out.
Luke got up, his face looked more scowly and angry, but all he felt was the fear of loosing the only person who he really knew, or who really knew him, “HOW?! How could you like me?! Tell me You’re Joking!!”
He could see the fear in Kota’s eyes, the guilt only growing, “i-im sorry I didn’t-“
“NO!! You shouldn’t love me!! Its wrong!!” but as he turned around, there stood an empty window, the curtains swaying as Kota flew out the window, the wind flying everywhere, messing up Lukas’ hair and leaving him confused and guilty.
There he was, left alone in his small apartment with only his thoughts.
Part 4, Dakota
Dakota flew through the chilly air. The cold night wind of Alaska piercing through his arms and legs, making them numb. Tears pricked his eyes as the wind whipped around him, making his eyes dry. The ache and fear in his heart only growing.
He had never flown so fast in his life, he didn’t even care if someone saw him and decided to chase after him, or if there was a paparazzi running his direction, he was too scared to think about other people right now.
His heartbeat loudly in his chest, echoing in his ears. The feeling of hopelessness only growing and growing as he flew faster and faster. He knew Lukas wasn’t following him as he flew, but the image of Lukas’ face when Kota shared his secret with him made his gut wrench, made his mind spiral.
The wind calmed as he reached a forest, he landed on the ground softly. His arms immediately wrapped around his smaller body due to the cold. The bottom of his baggy jeans getting wet due to the snow. His curly brown hair just as disheveled as his mind. His brown eyes wide as he stared at the ground, searching for what to do.
Run. A part of his mind said instinctively, but he couldn’t. Half of the states depended on Him and Lukas. He couldn’t run from or avoid Lukas, he had to face it head on, like he did with most things, but how after how Lukas reacted?
He walked into the forest. His black converse wet and cold as he continued to walk and walk. He wasn’t afraid, he knew he could fend for himself. Ever since he knew he was part of that prophecy that ruins everything about his personal life, including his love life.
The freckles underneath his eyed quickly get drenched at the silent tears that fall. Theres no sniffles, no sound. Just the soft ringing of nothingness and soft footsteps in the snow.
If something threatened any part of the U.S right now, he didn’t think he could deal with it. He barely restrained from breaking down and screaming to the silent starry sky. Wishing on every shooting star that Lukas would somehow love him back, or just accept him at the very least.
As if he had manifested it, there it was, the alarm that an attack was on their way. He quickly wiped away the remaining tears on his face and flew back into the night sky
Part 5, Lukas
Lukas was pacing around in circles in his small living room before the alarms went off. Even after they did his mind was more on the thought of Kota having feelings for him. His guilt of what he said eating him alive.
“How could I, a guy, like another guy?! How could you even like me?? You’re insanely stupid for thinking I would like you back! Let alone loving me in the first place!!” the words repeated in his head. This is what he was afraid of.
“UGH! Why would I say that?? How could I say that??” he scolded himself as he ran through the streets, under the soft orange glow of the streetlights. The piercing gaze of his light brown eyes illuminating from the bright light spinning around the head of the alarm far away from where he was. His light brown hair shining the blinding sensation right back at the light.
He shrugged his jacket off, showing his plain white shirt, along with his tall, tan and toned physique that hugged his broad shoulders. His shirt had large poorly cut ovals on the back, coming out of those holes were large feathery wings, stretching out at least 10 feet on either side of him. They started flapping powerfully and within moments he was flying gracefully like a bird. The wind whipped his hair around.
His mind was racing of thoughts about Kota. How badly he hurt his friend, the look of pain he had cast on his face. Now he had to see him again during this battle. He knew this would be hard for not only him, but for Kota.
So why did I reject him? Even if I know I might love him the same?
He thought for a long moment as he flew. Nearing the sounds of guns and explosions. Splinters of wood and pine needles had started to appear on the ground. Meaning he was close to the battlefield. The smell of rotting flesh from the not yet buried or cremated few who fought. No one was strong enough to let go of their loved once who fought yet, so there they rot on the pavement. Blood mixed with dirt and mud, bodies covered in dirt, snow, and large pieces of wood.
Abruptly, the faint sound of men and women charging at each other, screaming, crying, came into his ears, A sound he heard frequently. Then the sound of wind flying around him…Kota was here, somewhere.
Luke landed on battlefield of mud and broken trees with wind bursting around him, making his usually well kept and straight hair a whirlwind of follicles. The bottom of his blue jeans getting muddy gross and wet
Then he saw him. Dakota. He landed slightly in front of him, on his lift. For the first time in what seemed like forever, Luke let his emotions fall on his face. His concern and guilt as he looked over at the smaller man, but Kota didn’t look back at him.
it started too fast for Luke to react. The giant planes that had lined up on the other side of the battlefield, the cargo ramps opened up and out came at least three tanks from each one, and they started firing immediately.
The frontlines were still going on, people killing each other left and right, just with more…. boom booms and explosions.
Dakota lifted his hands to emit those glowing green force fields that reminded Lukas of an arcade. Stopping the tanks in their tracks. Lukas started beating his wings again. Flying towards the people attacking the innocent people, who were so desperate for freedom they’d attack with only pitch forks and axes.
Luke flapped in the air, pointing his palms at the tanks. Within seconds, lightning flickered in the dark sky. Bright flashes of pure white lightning shot down onto each tank making them burst into flames or simply stop them from moving. Those who caught on fire had men in blue army uniforms. They scrambled as their skin formed into their skin, which only burnt them to a crisp.
Sure, it was gruesome, but this job showed far worse than that. like a sister dying at the ripe age of six…or a father simply dropping you off at the orphanage with no other explanation.
He looked around again, seeing Eris shout at the fighting crowd. Her fingers on her pale neck. Her black hair tightly wrapped in a bun above her head. She was wearing casual grey sweatpants, her pale green eyes scanning the crowd of screaming people
“Retreat!” she yelled. Over and over, drilling the annoying tone of her voice into his mind. He groaned, but it worked. Making all the people in common clothing like T-shirts and shorts run. Some bleeding, other on the floor with half closed eyes, their chests slightly rising and falling.
That’s when the other side noticed the trio. Instantly retreating to their helicopters, planes, and military cars. Luke smiled as more lightning shot down in front of or next to the vehicles. Making them swerve and crash into each other.
His mind went back to his guilt and concern for Kota. The words of this prophecy echoed in his mind.
The great myths have haunted this world for far too long, so 5 children shall be born with great power and ability. Their strength is their motivation, but their curse shall be they never get what they wish for most.
Was Dakota what he wished for most? Or was it his freedom?
Luke landed on the ground, looking over at Kota who looked away from him. His hands were shoved in his pockets. He could see the slight reflection of the moonlight in the bottom of his eyes.
“Kota…” Luke only whispered it, but it was enough for Kota to turn around and start sniffling. Bringing his sleeve up to wipe his tears.
Eris walked over with a look of concern when she looked at Kota. She looked over at Luke, giving him a glare.
“what did you do this time??” She spoke in a loud whisper as Kota was still softly crying. Making soft whimper sounds. Luke only felt more guilty at what she said, he looked down, his guilt plastered on his face. Eris’ eyes grew wide at the sight, “oh so this is serious?”
Then in came Apollo, Lukas didn’t hide his hatred. Immediately glaring at the blonde boy. The guy was too perfect. Too perfect for Kota to be friends with.
“What happened?” he said, walking up to Kota and immediately hugging him, “are you alright.
Apollo glared at Luke, “you said what to him??” ugh! He forgot how annoying his mind reading was, and those blaring blue eyes, along with his too bright of a style. Bright vlue baggy jeans, stars and suns scattered across them.
Luke was about to explain something. Then he heard it, the loud BANG of a gunshot. A sniper had shot a bullet.
Before anyone could react Luke tackled Kota to the ground. Apollo ran towards the sniper. Chasing them away. Eris screamed as the blood started pouring out of Lukas’ side. Time seemed to move slower and slower. Dakota had stopped crying, his brain choosing the freeze state instead of fight or flight. He was shaking crazily.
Luke groaned, putting his hand over the wound. His head hit the soft, muddy ground. He gritted his teeth through the pain. It suddenly became harder to breathe.
Part 6, Dakota (the final part)
He knelt down in front of the bleeding Lukas, more tears silently falling down his face. Lukas was breathing heavily, his wings fluttering and flapping frantically.
“Kota..” he said threw the pain. Tears pricking the taller boys eyes. Dakota saw the guilt and fear in that look “I didn’t mean what I said. I-I’m sorry…”
“No! No You’ll be fine! Its alright! It’s fine! You’re gonna be alright!” Kota couldn’t control the choked sobs coming from him. He knew what was gonna happen. The prophecy was right, the only thing he ever wanted was love, and that’s whats being stripped from him. if he hadn’t loved in the first place, Luke would be fine…it was his fault Luke was dying.
“Kota, I need you to do something, b-before I’m ash in the wind…take my wings.” He said, Lukes wings calmed. Lying limp next to him.
“Alright….I can do that, why?”
“As a reminder…to not let anything stop you from flying to the sun or down to the depths of the sea…” Kota only sobbed harder at his words, he held Luke in his arms, he buried his face in his shoulder, “I’ll say hi to Kirby for you…” and with that, he left. His body going limp, his breathing stopped. His eyes were still open, looking at the starry night sky. It was silent.
“I’m sorry Luke…”

This is a great story, Lex. You have all the imagination I ultimately lack! Just keep honing your skills and never give up. This is poignant and full of heroism, with all its flaws. If you've got time to edit, there are a few grammatical errors, (not starting a sentence with a capital letter, etc), which is understandable given the pace and the grip of the story. I can almost see you writing this!
A great start to Reedsy, where I hope you will spend many happy hours!

My favorite part of this story is the vivid imagery. I particularly loved the image of Lukas taking off his jacket and revealing his magnificent wings.
