Sad Mystery

It was just an ordinary night for the Dela Cruz family, it was 7 o’clock in the evening when they heard a vehicle stopped nearby. It was followed by voices talking about something.

Juan Dela Cruz immediately stood up with a frown on his face. He looked outside the window just to see a truck outside and five people carrying boxes and furniture.

“Someone is moving in to old man’s house.” He whispered but somehow his wife heard him. “He just died last week! Who sold his house?” Maria raised her voice, Juan covered his ears and glared at his wife. “Don’t look at me like that Juan. You should talk to May and Jun.” Maria sighed, her hands resting on her hips.

Juan did what he was told, he went upstairs to talk to his children. “May and Jun? Let me in.” he knocked at their door and after knocking thrice, the two opened their room.

“We have new neighbors who moved in today, the two of you know what to do right?” asked Juan. Jun pouted before looking away, refusing to answer his father. “Do we have to do it?” asked May, while holding her Barbie doll tightly. “Yes, your Mom and I will be back before morning. The food is at the fridge.” Juan looked at his son and sighed, “Jun, we’ll buy the toy car that you want. Is that fine with you?” Jun’s face immediately lit up and he gave a nod to his father.

Maria and Juan prepared to leave the house but when they were at the garage, their new neighbor saw them. “Hey there! I’m Christina! This is my fiancée Mark, we just moved in.” the woman named Christina greeted them, Juan saw how his wife stiffened. Maria was frozen and she couldn’t speak, “I’m Juan and this is my wife Maria. It’s nice meeting the two of you but we have to go.” Juan looked at his wife and gave her a comforting smile. “Oh shame, we were about to ask the two of you to join us for dinner.” Maria was the one who talked, “Oh, we have work. We work night shift at the hospital.” Maria bit her lower lips nervously, glancing at her husband.

“Oh, really? See you guys tomorrow then!” Mark waved at them goodbye as they drove off.

Juan let out a sigh of relief before looking at Maria, “You look so nervous earlier, they can’t be suspicious about us Maria.” His wife just bit her lower lip, “We have children now Juan, we can’t let them know, we can’t.” she told him, her voice was shaky and her hands were trembling. Juan held his wife’s hand with a reassuring smile.

“No one will know, I promise you that.”

When the morning came, Jun and May woke up and as they headed downstairs they see no signs of their parents. “They’re not yet home! Don’t worry Jun, I’ll serve the food for us.” May opened the fridge and took out the chicken that their parents bought for the two of them.

“This is our favorite right? I’ll go get the strawberry juice too. Sit down and wait for me to finish Jun.” May took the strawberry juice from the fridge and pour some on Jun’s glass and on her own.

“Let’s eat!” Jun smiled and started digging on his food.

After eating, the two opened the television on their living room. “Let’s go outside. Mom and Dad is not yet here, we can play with Xian and Cherry again!” Jun pulled his sister’s hand for her to stand up.

May decided to join her brother outside but before they went out, she made him wear a jacket. She also wore a jacket before going out.

“May and Jun! There’s a cute puppy here, see?” it was one of Jun’s playmate, his name is Xian. Jun immediately ran to him and pet the puppy, May followed her brother and did the same when she saw how adorable the puppy was.

“It’s so hot!”

“Is it?” asked Jun and May, before Xian could answer they saw their parents exiting their car. “Jun and May! What did we tell you?! Put that puppy down Jun!” Juan carrie Jun while Maria carried May.

“Oh here he is! We’ve been looking for our puppy, thank you for finding it Juan and Maria.” Says Christina, Juan shook his head, “It was the kid who found it, right Xian?” Instead of answering Juan, Xian ran off.

“What can we do for you guys? George is very important to me and Christina.” Mark held his fiancee’s hand before petting the puppy. “It’s fine, really. Sorry but we have to go inside, Jun has allergies to dogs.” Maria told them before entering their house.

Mark and Christina looked at each other with their mouths open, “Are we pushing it too far? I just want to be friends with them.” Christina sighed, “Baby, let’s give them the food we cooked, maybe they’ll like it.” Mark put his arms around Christina’s shoulder and they headed home.

“How many times do we have to tell you not to go outside when we’re not home!” Maria held her husband’s hand, “Juan, enough. Jun and May go to your room, your Dad and I will talk.” Maria and Juan went to their kitchen when they made sure that the kids were already upstairs.

“We have to tell them the truth.” Maria whispered.

Juan shook his head, “They’re just kids! They won’t understand.” Maria sighed before massaging the bridge o her nose, “We can’t keep lying to our children Juan!” She shot back.

“So you want to tell them that we are…” before Juan could finish his sentence they heard footsteps on their living room. “Jun and May I told the two of you go to your room, didn’t I?” Maria and Juan made their way to the living room just to see Christina and Mark holding a Tupperware. “Hey I cooked Garlic Chicken, the door was opened so we went inside. Sorry for that.” Maria’s eyes widened and she elbowed Juan’s stomach, “Sorry but Maria and I are both allergic in Garlic, thank you though. We are actually a little busy let’s talk tomorrow Christina and Mark.” Juan sent the two away and looked at Maria.

“I told you, we have to let the kids know or else..” Maria started crying and Juan pulled her towards him so he could hug her.

“Shh, okay we’ll talk to them.”

Juan and Maria went to their children and they saw them playing with their toys.

“May and Jun we have something to say.”

“What is it Mommy?” May looked up at her mother innocently, Jun on the other hand was busy playing with his toy truck. “We’ve been hiding something from the two of you.” Juan caressed his son’s face with a sad smile on his lips.

“We are..” Maria, bit her lower lip, she can’t say it, she doesn’t want her children to be hurt, “We know…” May smiled and hugged her mother.

“We know why we only eat raw meat, we know that the strawberry juice was a sheep’s blood. We know that we are vampires that’s why we have to apply sunblock and wear jackets when we’re outside.” Juan and Maria was frozen when they heard May, “How did you know?” Juan asked gently.

Jun put his toy truck down and looked at his father, “Xian told us that his mother was saying that we are vampires. I don’t mind it though, I think it’s cool.” Maria hugged her children and cried.

“We’re sorry for hiding it from the two of you.” Juan hugged them and kissed the top of their heads. He smiled down at his children and say, “We can move out from here. Somewhere, where there aren’t many people. Is that fine with you?” he asked his wife and his children, Mary nodded. She just wanted to keep their secret to live.

“Too bad, it’s already late.”

They looked behind them just to see Christina and Mark pointing their guns at them, Juan hid his wife and children behind him.

“Run, I’ll take care of them.” He whispered to his wife but before they could even move, Mark and Christina already fired their guns, killing Juan and Maria instantly.

Jun and May, hugged their dead parents body. “We were not doing anything bad!” they cried. Christina and Mark just smirked. “That’s why we don’t have to wait for you guys to do something bad. Sorry kids.” The couple fired their guns once more and they smiled when the kids fell on the floor, lifeless.

“Another family of vampires was taken down.” Mark chuckled. Christina nod her head, “Let’s get these bodies burned.” The two pour the gasoline on the Dela Cruz family’s bodies before throwing a match stick on it.

They went out of the house and watched the house burned, the house of the Dela Cruz family that dreamt nothing but to live peacefully.
