Contemporary Black Fiction

(TW: racial slurs)

We have learned to fly like birds, to swim like fish; but we have not learned the simple art of living as brothers."

Martin Luther King

In a city whose name I don't want to remember ……

--- Hey, you, come here!

SILENCE

--- Hey, you, come here!

SILENCE

--- Citizen, please!

--- Good morning, officer.

--- Good morning. Are you deaf?

--- No.

--- Then why didn't you answered me?

--- Ahhh! I have a name. My name is not. Hey you.

--- What's the matter, black clown?

--- It's true, it really is true.

--- What's true?

--- It is true that I am black and I am very proud to be. I'm indeed a clown but I make more money than you doing my clown kinds of stuff, but I also have a Masters Degree in Social Communication, and I am a writer, do you understand, hey, you, come here?

--- Identrifilation.

---- What?

--- Identrifilation.

--- What? I do not understand.

--- Identrifilationnnnnn.

---- Ahhh, I get it! Here you have my identification.

--- Give me here, black clown! Name.

--- If you can't read, why did you ask me for the ID?

--- N****r.

--- What is up?

--- You are disrespecting me.

--- Am I disrespecting you? Not official. Disrespect is you that the state pays you a lo money and you cannot read. At least spend half your salary and buy yourself a dictionary or a brain.

--- You are disrespecting me. I am the law!

--- Does your boss know that you can't read?

--- Not you, you, respect the law!

--- You see.

--- What do I have to see?

--- He saw how bad one feels when they don't call him by name.

--- City ...

--- Does your boss know that you, I mean, you can't read?

--- What the hell do you care?

--- Of course, I care. You're wasting my time. Are they raising your salary for wasting civilian's time?

--- Name.

Silence.

--- Citizen. Won't you tell me your name?

--- Agree. M- i- guel M- a- r- t-í-Nez Olivares

--- Why do you talk like that?

--- Didn't you want to know my name?

--- Yes.

--- So…

--- So ... Why the hell are you talking to me like that?

--- Lieutenant.

--- Captain.

--- Okay. Spelling my own name is a crime?

--No.

--- Uhmmm! I see. So...

--So what is it?

--- Nothing. I just asked you if spelling my own name was against the law.

--- And I just said no. What's the problem?

--- None. Now I'm calmer. I thought I was breaking the law by spelling. As in this country, laws and ministers are changed every five minutes.

--- Watch your tongue, n****r!

--Article 19.

--Arti what?

--- Every individual has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the right not to be disturbed because of his opinions, the right to investigate and receive information and opinions, and the right to disseminate them, without frontiers, by any means of expression. Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

---What the fuck are you talking about, black clown?

--- Freedom of speech, Lieutenant.

´---Freedom of speech?

--- Yes, Lieutenant. Freedom of expression. I-can-say-whatever-I-like.

--- Don't talk to me like that anymore. I am not ignorant.

--- It is true. You cannot read, cannot listen, but you are not ignorant.

--- Are you making fun of me?

--- No, I say what I see.

---Changing the subject. Why am I called?

--- Are you in a hurry?

--- Sure, time is gold.

--- It's a routine checkup.

--- Ahhh! I see.

--- What the hell do you see?

--- One thing.

--- What the hell is it?

--- You ask me for my ID because I'm black.

--- What the hell did you say?

--- You -ask -me -for- my -ID because I'm black.

--- Shut your mouth, black clown! I am black just like you.

------ That's what bugs me, damn it.

--- Watch your tongue!

--Look who's talking! The walking dictionary of bad words. How many blacks have you asked for ID today, in the month, to do your routine check-up?

--What the fuck do you care?

--Of course, I care! Since when are you a white people slave?

--- Shut the fuck up...

------ By blacks like you, racism has been strengthened in this country. Blacks like you deny their roots to be accepted by whites. In the end... Never but never forget that being black here is a disgrace. Our only right a coffin and that is if we make an inviolable contract with the cemetery director: the best tombs are also for whites.

--- Shut up shut up!

--- Then you get angry when the people accuse you of being racists, abusers, ignorants, corrupts.

--- What's wrong happens to you? I am not corrupt.

--- You don't, sergeant.

--- Captain, damn it, captainnnnn!

--- What's wrong, does the truth bother you?

--- What truth! Lies are what you saying

--- Is it a lie that there is corruption here? Is it a lie that here violating human rights is part of the routine? Is it a lie that mistreating civilians is part of the internal policy of the state?

---Who permitted you to criticize the government, n****r?

-----Article 19.

--Arti what?

------ Every individual has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the right not to be disturbed because of his opinions, the right to investigate and receive information and opinions, and the right to disseminate them, without frontiers, by any means of expression. Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

---You like to disobey the law?

--- No, I'm just telling the truth.

--- I want to see if you'll tell the truth with a swollen face.

--- Long-life Justice!

--- If every time I tell the truths that the press and artists with fear do not dare to say, they will beat me and put me in jail, well.... ¡ It's so many years of telling lies, pardon, omitting reality!

--- It's enough, damn it!

---Don't touch me!

---N****r, don't fight, you are in contempt!

---Don't touch me!

--- Ok. Will you accompany me to the station?

--- No problem. I have nothing to fear.

--- We'll see if you should or not.

--- I can make a phone call?

--- No.

--- My family has the right to know where I'm going.

---Ok. It will be your last call black clown.

--- Thanks, sergeant.

---Captain, damn it, captainnnnn!

The alleged offender takes out a mobile, dials a number, and ...

---Hello. With Satan, please.

---This is Satan. Who is?

--- Satan, I am God.

--- Speak fast. I have a busy day.

--- Satan, you were right. Blue madness attacks only blacks.

This was an interesting use of using only dialogue. I love the plot twist that the police captain is also black, I had imagined him to be white! It’s very topical at the moment, I was left wondering why the person being held by the PO was so calm in the face of such blatant racism. An interesting read!
