What you are about to read is a true account of what happened one night while myself and about 12 other kids were playing a game of "Home free all". It is also a song that I recorded to the karaoke version of, " That's the night that the light went out in Georgia". I will explain each Verse and Chorus as the story goes.
Verse One
Every friday night I would go out
Meet up the street at a friends house
To play our usual game of home free all
There would be about twelve of us
We’d pick our teams without a fuss
And it went on until dark surely did fall
Yes, that's what we did. We would all stand in a circle, pick two captains and they would pick their teams. We would start around 5 pm in New Jersey in the summer. By 6 pm, the moon and one street lamp would be our only form of visible light. It was scary but fun. The best thing about the game was nobody ever really got hurt or a fight breaking out because of a dispute about something stupid. It was just good, clean, pure fun. The best I've ever known.
Verse Two
One team would hide and the other would seek
Being caught would make the situation bleak
And you’d be locked up in an invisible cell
But gettin’ tagged by your teammate
All would go free with no debate
Then home free all outloud somebody would yell
I'm very sure most kids have heard of home free all. It was like hide and seek with a twist. If you tagged someone that was hiding, then that team would pick a tree or something in the yard as a cell for the tagged person. The other also had a place that was considered their home once they came out of hiding. If somebody was caught, they would have to be tagged by someone from thjier team to free them and try to make it to their home. When you made your home, you would yell home free all. This was a timed game. Usually one hour for each team to hide and make it their home without getting tagged.
Chorus One
That’s the night I truly almost hung myself
By running into my neighbors closeline
I must say it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever felt
In all of those thirteen years of mine
Verse Three
I was one of the fastest kids on the street
I was kinda short but light on my feet
Gettin' caught was never a habit of mine
My friend John Timm was also quick too
So from my heart I’ve got to tell you
He might be able to catch me if given the time
Verse Four
That’s why whenever we did pick teams
It was like we were joined at the seems
And besties have no choice but be tight
Enough said about this antique game
You know the objective and the name
Now it’s time to hear what happened that night
That was very true. Besides my friend John Timm, I was faster than Nestle Quick. Somehow, him and I always were on the same team. I'm saying we always won, but I never had to tag him.
Bridge
I was runnin’ as fast my feet would go
Being tagged was not an option you know
As dark as it was I had to trust my blue eyes
I was doing just fine I have to say
Then all of a sudden not in a small way
My neck felt restricted and I started to rise
Chorus One
That’s the night I truly almost hung myself
By running into my neighbors closeline
I must say it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever felt
In all of those thirteen years of mine
Verse Five
Because of my speed when I left the ground
Horizontal in mid air I was lying down
Just gazing at the stars until suddenly
The clothesline brought me back down to earth
As funny as it sounds to me it was worth
The red line across my neck for all to see
Chorus Two
That’s the night I truly almost hung myself
By running into my neighbors closeline
I was so shocked I didn’t even call for help
‘Cause I was laughin’ way too much at the time
First you must understand that most houses in my neighborhood had clotheslines for hanging up clothes to dry in the back yard. I was really booking, trying to get to my home after I came out of hiding and it was dark. You can actually see pretty good in the dark, especially when the moon is out. But unfortunately, there was no light by the clothesline and it was low enough for me to get tangled in it but I did not stop running until I left the ground. At one point, I was literally, horizontal in mid air gazing at the stars. Then suddenly, I started to come back down because the clothesline would not stretch anymore. I just landed on my back. I just started to laugh hysterically. I was fine but had to go to jail I got tagged when I hit the ground. My friends had no mercy at all. The next morning I had to explain the red mark on my neck because I wasn't shaving yet. This is a very true story as I said before. You will find that my lyrics fit perfectly to the karaoke version listed earlier. Have fun with it. I did.
Outro
That’s the night I truly almost hung myself
By running into my neighbors closeline
I must say it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever felt
Also an unforgettable memory of mine
I actually recorded 21 songs, using a karaoke version to fit the lyrics I wrote to the adventures I have had in my life. There are so many more. I have enough to make another CD with at least 25 escapades I have been through and still going through. I am 69 and so glad I am still able to write about my life and make my kids happy for who their father is. Plus it helps me recall visually the antics I was involved in. The night I actually almost hung myself is number 10 on the CD I recorded years ago. Once again, enjoy.
