Insecure, reticent, socially inept, yet occasionally waxing wise, I've often wondered if maybe I'm just wired weirdly. In 4th grade I won a spelling bee. In 7th a boy classmate & I had a Radio-Telephone entry that won our school's Science Fair. In 8th my Sierra Club essay won a chauffered limo trip to a banquet, as well as a girl classmate & I co-created our school newspaper. Bored, unmotivated & depressed, my study habits with few exceptions were mainly abyssmal. Except for winning pool trophies, managing a friend's campaign for president & costarring in a senior class play, I did mediocre in high school & flunked out of a university.
A decade later my brilliant friend called for dubious advice, saying she switched her major from Nuclear Engineering to Computer Science so I dove into rife computer languages. Job offers came that kept me busy. Meanwhile, I failed to be a mountain man, got arrested at Rocky Flats protesting, helped a Rainbow Gathering, did odd jobs, picked apples, became a martial artist & Kānaka Maoli. Eventually, I joined Mensa & made it to Phi Theta Kappa membership. I wrote over 1,200 long book reports on a wide variety of topics.
A roller coaster of wayward travels & wild affairs took me to 49 states, 3 bordering countries & radical philosophies. I was also somewhat a psychonaut, poet, song & sci-fi buff. 9/11/2001 wiped out my commodities trading account. I learned culinary & medicinal herb gardening, raised rabbits, chickens & worms. During Covid lockdown, I taught myself Java & wrote HaikuSavant, a Japanese poem generator. "Let’s think about ethnic diversity for a moment. This is a concept that should bring people together but has instead reinforced existing prejudices through misuse.^ Ethnic diversity is a property of the whole human race, but all too often white people use both the word “ethnic”, and the word “diverse” to refer exclusively to people of colour. Consider phrases such as “the diversity hire” to describe a non-white person employed in a majority-white company. While at least a dictionary definition of “ethnic” includes reference to being in a culturally-distinct minority, there’s no such excuse for “diverse”.
"What we see when someone from a majority group (neurotypical people, white people in the UK) uses “diverse” to mean “unusual” is an eradication of the ethnicity or neurotype of the speaker. They do not class themselves as a part of diversity because they do not recognise the relative unusual-ness of their own identity. Instead, they think of themselves as “normal” and hence everyone else as “diverse”. The desire to other is strong enough to overcome the fundamental meanings of the words in question.

There is often value in using more specific language – such as “I am dyslexic” or “I have ADHD” – but in any case everyone is entitled to their own preference. "That said, it is essential to recognise and adopt the language preferences of individuals talking about themselves. While we refer to non-neurotypical people in this article as ‘neurodivergent’, many individuals might describe themselves as neurodiverse, or using other language altogether, and these preferences should always take precedent when referring to a specific person."
