TW: murder
The Kasarani auditorium was packed to capacity. City dwellers from nearby as well as party goers from far and beyond had all gathered on that much awaited day for the dancehall concert. Dancers in tight small shorts could be seen shaking their derriere to the sound of the music that boomed from the several large speakers. Those doing business could be seen busy attending to the guests that had visited their booths. Some wanted food while others used food as an excuse to socialize. However, most of the buyers were in search of their favorite alcoholic drinks. Another group of rowdy young lads passed by Anita as they carried one of their passed out friend high in the air. They disappeared into the crowd chanting, "incoming, move or we move you by force!"
Anita was trying to trace her friends whose mobile phones were on voicemail. She had been invited by her friends Clara, Janet and Steve but separated once they were at the concert. She had declined at first claiming that she had some school research to do. After much persuasion from her peers, she reluctantly obliged.
Anita kept moving closer and closer to the stage, scanning the vicinity in a bid to catch a glimpse of any of her peers. Accidentally she bumped into a man who was recording the performance on-stage. The man turned around to face his intruder.
"Sorry!" Anita mumbled.
"Atleast buy me a drink so we can have some sort of truce," said the man.
"Okay and I am really sorry. I just can't seem to find my friends in this whole mess..."
"Call me Max."
"And I am Anita but my friends just call me Annie."
The two, newly acquainted, strangers walked to the alcoholic drinks' booth side by side.
"Two shots of Irish whisky on the rocks please," Anita made her order
"And I shall have three shots of vodka on the rocks," said Max.
After three more rounds of alcohol, Anita had already forgotten about her friends and was lost in some deep and flirty conversation with Max. By now, there were almost four people in the booth they were in since almost all the attendees had gone to witness the main performance. Max who was now seated in close proximity to Anita began touching her thighs hence bridging the distance between the two "love birds" which culminated in a kiss. The kiss seemed like one pulled out of a Days Of Our Lives episode. The two "love birds" could not stop staring into each other's eyes, like little naïve children who had just had their first kiss. They both ordered another round of drinks and imbibed until their eyes became droopy. Anita then felt like she needed to get on her feet and test her sobriety. On two feet she was as solid as a rock. Max then told her to lift one leg up and that was when she came crambling down onto Max's arms. They both laughed at Anita's clumsiness. The liquor was working its magic for both of them. The mood was right and the music on the background swallowed every other sound around them. For the two of them, it seemed like they had attained a state of nirvana in each other's company.
Anita excused herself so she could use the washroom and left Max by himself, sipping his vodka while scanning the now almost deserted viscinity. On her way to the washroom she ran into a familiar face, Justin. Justin was Anita's first love from highschool and with all the alcohol in her system, all the good memories of their time together flooded her brain like a storm. After exchanging some pleasantries, Justin realised that she was drunk from the way she was staggering and politely offerred to escort her to the washroom in case someone had followed her. Anita agreed on the condition that Justin was to wait at the door.
Fifteen minutes turned to twenty and Max decided to go and fetch Anita himself. Upon reaching the entrance to the ladies' washroom, he found himself staring at a scene he had not seen coming. Anita was busy kissing on another man, so passionately that she did not realise Max was right there. However, Anita's "new catch", upon opening his eyes, was met with a very intense gaze. "Do you know him?" Justin asked.
Anita turned her head to meet a dejected and infuriated Max. His blood-shot eyes did not blink at all as he looked at Anita and then the other man, then back to Anita. A mix of jealousy and betrayal flooded him all at once. He charged at them both and took Anita's lover by his throat.
"Stop it Max! Right this moment! Can't you see you are drunk? You are going to hurt him?"
Max was not having any of it as he strangled the man even harder. "I shall not hurt him. Today he meets his maker, then you are next Anita! You think this is a game?"
Anita tried to break the grip on Justin's neck but to no avail. She rushed out of the washroom and met a security personnel on her way out. "He is going to kill him...in the washrooms...please help him," Anita pleaded amid sobs. The security man rushed to the scene and found Max on the floor, beside a lifeless body of Anita's first love, still breathing fire.
"We need back up in the ladies washrooms in the west wing of the stadium! I have found one lifeless body of a male and the suspected murderer seated beside it on the floor. Please hurry!"
In a few minutes, a crowd of people had thronged the area to witness the scene. However, the security personnel closed off the area as they awaited for police to arrive.
Upon their arrival, they took away Max,Anita and the body of the deceased and sped off. The rest of the concert was called off and all revellers ordered to leave the premises in thirty minutes.
