Greenwich Village had become a food desert. Oh, sure, there was plenty of sustenance to be had IF you were a risk taker. A gambler. I wasn’t. You only get one strike in that league, and I was terrified every time I had an at-bat.

I had gotten used to being alive. I liked it—no, I loved it—and it was light years better than the alternative. I know some know-nothings referred to us as the "living dead," but they had no idea what they were missing. So, with my back against the proverbial wall, I began to do some serious research.

You can imagine my surprise when I found out the absolute safest place for me to continue to hunt and find game was the porn industry.

In that discipline, the scourge was a serious problem detected early in the 80s. They had to devise a solution quickly if, as the saying goes, the show must go on. Billions of dollars hung (no pun) in the balance.

So, they devised two rules: (1) Condoms were required, and (2) frequent, documented testing was absolutely necessary. Actors who didn't follow these rules quickly found themselves persona non grata on all X-rated movie sets.

I reinvented myself from a bicycle quick-delivery maven on Wall Street to a stagehand in the booming porno world of Southern California.

I quickly learned that there was a clear dichotomy of actors in the porn industry. Porn stars were treated like gods and goddesses both on and off the set. They had proven that they had that certain something that consistently titillated consumers and made them open their wallets. With the advent of the MILF and Mature categories, there was also a clear career path into the Future. No longer was the typical porn star career limited to a few youthful years. It could go on for decades for those who worked at it and kept themselves in shape.

Of course, the lifespan of the average actor was woefully short. If a title was unprofitable, the actors were blamed, never the producers and directors, who were loath to admit they might have developed a boring script and story. If one or two of the titles you acted in failed to connect with the porn-buying public, your career was over.

Being a quick study, I instantly learned to avoid the stars for sustenance and to concentrate on the low-level actors. These often came from the world of prostitution and/or incarceration, were laden with prison tats more often than not, and, when they disappeared, the reaction from friends and family was usually "good riddance."

I found that drugs were a big problem. If I started dating an actress who was hooked on methamphetamines or some form of opioids, they wouldn't last long. One or two dates with even moderate bites and bloodletting, and they'd expire. I found a park in Santa Monica with lots of bushes that were convenient for dumping bodies, but when one of them was found by a kid on a skateboard, several stagehands were questioned as "known associates." I was released after I convinced the detectives I had no idea where the puncture wounds on her neck came from, but I was scared shitless during the interview.

So, I set my sights on finding a low-level porn actor who was in perfect health. It didn’t take long for me to discover Janeen Sage.

Janeen was popular in the industry. She had small parts in a string of money-making titles, none of which I had ever seen. I worked on several sets where Janeen was scheduled to make an appearance at the climax, usually as a cuckold or cuckolder in a lesbian relationship, but I never got to see her “act.”

Janeen was arguably the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Her friends in the industry referred to her as “Janeen the Dream”. She was six feet one and weighed one hundred and eighteen pounds. She had blonde hair, blue eyes, and legs that went on forever. Her breasts were small but exquisitely shaped and firm. She worked out every day and was in tip-top shape. All this fit right in with my plans.

We became friends and then had our first date. After a romantic dinner, we went to see Back to the Future, which we enjoyed enormously. Our favorite part was Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown delivering the line “Six billion gigawatts!”

We were still laughing as we walked into my place, where Janeen said, "Give me a minute. I have a surprise for you." I said, "Sure,” but what I thought was, "That makes two of us." Janeen went into the bathroom, and I sat on the sofa waiting. A couple of minutes later she came out and did a twirl in the middle of the living room. She was stark naked and had a body that immediately had all my parts dancing.

She was trans, but, hey, nobody's perfect.

I pitched. Janeen caught. When I tried to use protection, Janeen told me not to bother because she trusted me. It was at that moment I realized I was falling in love. Afterward, I offered role reversal, but she said she had an important scene tomorrow and wanted to ensure she was fully armed. I said, "Fine," and proceeded to tell her my big reveal. To my surprise, she was anxious to try it. She said she had always liked to try new things (as you can probably imagine), and this was something that had never crossed her mind.

She leaned her head to give me complete access to the nape of her neck. I nibbled. The scent was heavenly. Then I bit, but only for a second. When it was over, Janeen asked if that was all there was to it. “Yes,” I said and explained that I wanted this to be a long-term relationship, and I would never drink more than her heart could produce before the next meal, in this case, breakfast. I also reminded her to please keep up her workout regimen.

This went on for quite some time. We both fell madly in love. We were in the middle of planning our wedding vows when one day, Janeen came home from a porn shoot with a dark look on her face. I could tell something was amiss. "What's wrong, baby?" I asked.

“I got fired today.”

“What for?”

“I have E.D.”

“Oh, God, it’s my fault.”

We tried Viagra, Cialis, and a slew of those eighty-seven-cent knockoffs that are "guaranteed" until they don't work. I told Janeen I would stop using her blood and find sustenance elsewhere. She wouldn't hear of it. She said the thought of me biting somebody else's neck made her crazy jealous.

So, our time in the porn industry came to a close which turned out to be a cloud with a silver lining. Janeen turned out to be a natural mathematician. She got a job at an accounting firm and quickly worked her way up to assistant director. As for me, now that keeping food on the table (so to speak) was no longer a problem, I found work in the entertainment industry as a game show host.

No one ever learned my identity or Janeen's true gender. When Janeen began to age, and I didn't, I covered that fact with makeup. Eventually, I gave Janeen the gift of eternal life.

I really like this. Very well written. The ending does feel a bit rushed, though.
