Kamo City's Fall (Conquest of Noone)

Written in response to: "Write a story that includes the line “This is all my fault.”"

Drama Fantasy Fiction

The Siege of Kamo lasted for almost 6 years now. Smugglers would reach the city, but would be too injured and scared to leave the city. Many parts of the city resulted in riots and even cannibalism. However, while the city was consumed with chaos and death, the royals hid in Kamo Castle.

One day, a stranger in white and golden robes entered Kamo Castle and spoke to King Kramous. "My master wishes to aid you by destroying your enemy; however, you must give up your idols," said the stranger. King Kramous laughed. "Your master must be a fool if he thinks I'll give my love and loyalty to the Great Lion Gods. Tell your master, the false god that calls himself 'the True God'. That if he knew 'my heart', he would have known why I reject his offer now," said King Kramous. The stranger bowed and then left the castle.

Commander Crackfoot, a foreign military advisor from the Yellow Meadows, stood in the corner of the throne room. "Why did you do that? A deity was willing to give us help. You have doomed your people and your city," protested Crackfoot. "You have done nothing but complain about every action I take. I haven't heard from you about better alternatives. I am tired of your voice. Guards take him to his room and keep him there until tomorrow's routine walk around the castle walls," ordered King Kramous. "YOU ARE A FOOL!" shouted Crackfoot as he was dragged out of the throne room and then escorted to his room.

Once in his room, Crackfoot paced back and forth. "That fool. He doomed everyone here. He should have taken the deal. This siege has gone too long. Now I'll bet that the stranger is going to the Imperial camp and will offer the same deal to him. The only thing I hope is that he rejects the deal, too," he said to himself. He took a chair, stood on it, and looked out the window. He saw the siege equipment, the trenches, the tents. "What are you planning? What is your next move?" asked Crackfoot as he continued to stare out the window. He was given a small dinner and went to bed.

When morning came, Crackfoot woke up and stared at the window. He then saw a bright light hovering above the city walls, and then it disappeared. A rumbling was then heard, and the walls broke apart and began to collapse and fall into the moat surrounding the city. Crackfoot rushed to the door and started banging on it. "GUARDS! THE WALL! LET ME OUT!" shouted Crackfoot. Immediately, several guards burst into the room and looked out the window to see dust clouds forming around where the wall was. "Get the king to safety. We need all remaining soldiers and guardsmen to meet at the courtyard and throne room," ordered the Guard Segreant. "Commander, you'll need to leave the castle as well. Find the king and go with him," ordered the Sergeant. Crackfoot nodded and then ran throughout the castle to where the King's chambers were.

He knocked on the door. Princess Zarmos, a former Adimeral of Kamo, cracked open the door. "Why are you here? Shouldn't you be leaving?" asked Princess Zarmos. "I'm here to escort you to my homeland. You'll be safer there. Are there any secret passageways or underground tunnels we can navigate?" asked Crackfoot. "There is a tunnel network, but we don't have a map on us," answered Zarmos. "Well, how close are you to being ready to leave?" asked Crackfoot. "My mother is almost done packing the first chest. We still need to pack 2 more," answered Princess Zarmos. "We don't know how long it's going to take before the first wave of enemy troops reaches the castle walls, so if I can help pack, I will," said Crackfoot. "Thank you, but you're better off just standing guard," said Princess Zarmos as she closed the door. Crackfoot stood there for a couple of minutes. His heart began racing, and thoughts flooded his mind. He tried to act calm, but could only feel fear. After some time, the Princess and Queen came out carrying chests.

Servants came to the chamber and began to carry the chests for the royal family. Several Royal Guardsmen also came and escorted the entire group. They also ran passed King Kramous. He hugged his wife and daughter. "This is all my fault. I am so sorry. You never deserved this," he said, hugging them. "You're not coming with us?" asked his wife. "No. I need to fight for my people. I need to die for my family. Like the kings of old days," said King Kramous. The Royal family cried for a bit, then separated. The Queen, Princess, Crackfoot, several servants, and Royal Guardsmen began racing down hallways, stairways, and soon entered the tunnel system. A couple of magicians used their powers to make light. Some led from the front, some fell to the back. Crackfoot was toward the front.

Then the tunnel caved in, crushing a couple of servants and almost crushing the Princess, but the cave-in separated the Queen and Crackfoot from the Princess. "ZARMOS! ARE YOU ALRIGHT!" shouted the Queen. Muffled sounds could be heard, followed by screams. "ZARMOS! ZARMOS!" cried the Queen. Crackfoot grabbed her hand and began to lead her through the tunnel with the guards and servants. The Queen cried the entire time.

Then they came to the end of the tunnel, which was a massive drop above the moat that surrounded the city. "There should be a dock with small boats," said one of the servants. "This must be one of the fake tunnels. However, we do have rope. We could climb down and climb around toward the dock," said another servant. "Bad idea, the Nocee Empire will see us and shoot us," said one of the Royal Guards. "We could split up. Some of us will climb around while the rest use the tunnel system; that way, a small number will be harder to spot," said Crackfoot. "That could work," said another Royal Guard. "Fine. The servants will go with Commander Crackfoot. The Royal Guards and the Queen will take the tunnels," said the Royal Guard. "Makes sense to me," said Crackfoot as he began to tie the rope around himself, then the servants, and even the chests. He began to climb around the cliff. He and the servants finally reached the dock and dropped down. They found small boats and began to push them into the water. As they did so, the Queen and one Royal Guard came out of the tunnel running. They hopped into one of the boats and used oars to move. Crackfoot with the servants used their oars and paddled away. As they did, half-orcs, goblins, and dwarves stormed the dock and began firing spells and arrows at the boats. One of the arrows hit a servant who cried in pain, and a magic missile hit the royal guard, who died instantly. The Queen cried in horror. Crackfoot jumped from his boat, swam to the Queen's, and began to paddle. They reached a natural rocky archway, so the attacking army was out of range and couldn't see. They took the river until they reached the sea, then paddled along the coast until they reached one of the coastal cities of the Yellow Meadows. The Journey took around a week, and they were exhausted from paddling. The citizens took them in, nursed them, and sent them to the Capitol City, where they were taken in as refugees.
