Crime Suspense Thriller

Sandra stirred, still wrapped in the scent of her most recent lover. She breathed in his expensive cologne and the still lingering smell of their sweat on his sheets. Slowly she traced the lines up his resting form as he lay deep under the sheets. Her fingers curled around his thick brown hair as she pulled his head down to look at her. It was those eyes that had drawn her in, had warmed her to her core, that had led to this moment.

She had been warned about boys like him, the ones with the quick smile and even quicker hands but she could handle herself she thought over and over again, be smarter the next time. But each time she ended up here, staring up at the next face on her long list of broken hearts with only herself to blame.

“Good morning” she whispered, resting her head on his chest. He wrapped his arm around her, tracing lazy circles up and down her spine. She purred softly as she looked around the room. Glass cases filled with expensive watches lined the shelf along the wall, top of the line laptops rested on his oak desk and every other available wall space was taken by lavish artwork, some of the finest she had ever seen. She could get used to waking up in a room like this.

“Good morning, last night was…amazing” he released a heavy sigh as he relived his favorite moments. He sat up pulling the silk sheets with him. He would do anything for those eyes. “How about some coffee?” He asked, then frowned as he looked at his new phone “or since it’s already past noon maybe some lunch?”

Sandra pulled the sheets back over her as she sat up. “Coffee sounds great,” she said, smiling coyly. “Mind if I use your bathroom to freshen up a bit?” He nodded and pointed down the hall. “Third door on the left” she whispered a hurried thank you as she brushed a kiss to his cheek after grabbing her clothes.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket as she locked the door behind her. Sandra bit back a smile as a simple message flashed across the screen. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, her heart thundering as she replied.

The smell of fresh coffee met her as she wandered down the hallway and into the kitchen. She marveled at the spacious kitchen as he handed her a cup of hot coffee. She took it in both hands, sipping gently, silently watching him through the steam. Now it was her turn to surprise him. Her cup landed with a soft clink as she set it down on the counter. She laughed as he stumbled when she pulled him in to kiss him, nearly spilling his drink as he set it down beside hers.

She cracked open one eye as she slowly reached a hand over his coffee. A tiny ripple moved across the steaming liquid then disappeared as quickly as it came. Her smile came easily as she put a hand on his chest and backed away picking up her coffee. A feline smile spread across her face as she watched him enjoy his drink.

She knew what was coming next and couldn’t wait. Her heart thundered as she patiently tapped her manicured fingernails on the table. Her pulse quickened when he turned on the news, the anticipation roaring in her head.

“In other news, escaped convict Sandra Lang, also known as Poison Widow, is still at large. She is considered extremely dangerous and armed. If you have any information leading to the capture of Sandra Lang please contact police.” The man sitting across from Sandra stiffened, eyes going wide as a picture of Sandra flashed across the screen.

“I can’t believe it” she whined “that’s a terrible picture. They didn’t even get my good side.” She shrugged as the man looked over. He gasped, trying and failing to find the right words. She couldn’t decide if it was from the poison now coursing through his veins or the fact that he had spent his last night on earth with a wanted woman. His hands shook as he clutched his throat. She watched gleefully as coffee and corpse clattered to the floor.

Sandra jumped from her chair as someone knocked on the door. “Oh don’t get up, that’s probably for me” She laughed skipping into the foyer. Three men grinned as she opened the door. Two pushed passed her while the third moved closer, a hand breath away from her. He pushed a strand of stray hair away from her face, tucking it behind her ear.

“You had me worried love” He said, planting a kiss on her forehead “We should get to work before the police get here” Crashing noises echoed from down the hall as the two others had found the collection of Rolex and other valuables she’d listed in her message. She nodded and began moving through the house, taking anything and everything that caught her eye starting with the wine cellar.

Tires squealed as the truck peeled off down the driveway. Nearly every inch filled with stolen goods. Sandra sat back and watched the house disappear in the rear view mirror. They had taken enough to be able to disappear for a while, but not forever. She looked around at the men celebrating and grinned wickedly.

“Pull over here” Sandra said pointing to an abandoned parking lot on the outskirts of town. She hopped out of the truck pulling a bottle of champagne with her. “Time to celebrate boys” She said raising it above her head “To our finest heist and to never seeing the inside of a jail cell again” They all laughed as she took a swig, then smoothly wiped her hand over the top of the bottle before passing it on. The men all drank until the bottle was finished.

Sandra never looked back as she took the keys and drove away, leaving the three dead men in the parking lot. What a waste she thought as she hit the open road of perfectly good champagne.
