Coming of Age Horror Indigenous

This story contains themes or mentions of physical violence, gore, or abuse.

Things were heating up in the sasquatch world. Cara knew things were building, and getting worse. More sightings, more people being followed and harassed. More people disappeared, experienced hikers and hunters who knew how to get around in the woods. She was up to her pretty dark eyeballs in wendigo, and now needed to get someone else involved. Amp was a great fighter, just a wee bit crazy. Well sometimes off the wall insane. But she liked to work with him, and could depend on him. In a fight, he was the best to have your back. That marine training really does come in handy when things get bad.

There was a hotspot she kept hearing about, near the edge of the Yukon territory, north of her. Big game hunters and wilderness hikers were chased, harassed, and one or two were missing or lost. She knew it wasn’t wendigo because wendigo didn’t throw rocks or tree knock. Or scream like someone was being murdered, or sound like a bulldozer moving through the woods. No, it was a pack of squatch, some menacing ones at that. The once elusive, playful, mostly even temperament creatures were changing,

When the big cats and wolves move out of an area, that means squatch. Even the brown bears would distance themselves as much as possible, even near a good fishing source. Too much competition plus on occasion Cara believed the creatures would group hunt these animals, better to secure their food source. This was the new normal, but it made it easier for Cara to locate them.

She would need to invest in a few new rifles. Her bow would not be enough. She hated to shoot anything that had their ancestry well known to the first nations people as friends in the forest. She had several discussions with the elders in her tribe about all of it. They had to keep their people safe, although it was the white man that was experiencing most of the losses. She knew it would get very bad for her tribe and neighboring tribes. Some were historical rivals, but the new situation meant everyone needed to work together.

The hairy people were native but they also portaled. This led her to think that yes, they were recruited by the enemy that Slay Inc. had been fighting for centuries. She also had heard from other tribes of sasquatch genocide. Just a few random stories where small amounts of evidence were found, but since they were tribal, she knew the information was legit and accurate. That was a very ominous sign, terrifying. Why would they kill their own kind?

She had messaged Amp, he would meet her near an old lumbering road. They could ride the dirt bikes into the woods pretty far. She wanted the hairy men to know they were there to provoke them. She knew once they got into the really remote woods they would be watched and tracked. She was counting on it.

Besides Amp, she had some friends with her. Some of the more experienced hunters from her tribe, Josh Eagleclaw and Mack Wind River. They were able to portal due to slight disabilities, but they were not a part of Slay. They were ready to fight, and had helped Cara with a problem wendigo in the past. They would portal to the location but be in the real world when they got there. Hence the need for rifles. It was a strong group, ready to slay.

They portaled through, and met Amp. After a few minutes of greetings and prepping, they got on the bikes and rode. It was about 50 miles before they had to ditch the bikes. One thing they hoped that the bikes would be intact when they got back. The monsters of the forest would sometimes destroy campsites and vehicles. They hid them best they could and hoped for the best. Now to hike into the deep woods. It was at least a two day hike, into the ancient woods, where all the bad stuff happened.

Slay probably could have put them quite a bit closer but it was better for them to search the woods as they went. The squatch would already know they were here probably, and they are possibly being hunted. They had planned for either scenario, being tracked or the element of surprise.

They were spread out, studying the ground for signs and covering more ground. Rifles at the ready. Super quiet, taking it slow, mostly so they could hear something sneak up on them. As it got late, they found a good camping spot and settled in. The night was uneventful, with no howls or knocks. Nothing was thrown at the camp all night. Cara thought, yep, they had not been found out yet, even with the bikes they traveled in on. She did not think if they had been seen or heard the creatures would be this quiet.

Another day of moving through the woods, Cara thought they would arrive at the location at about dusk. Good timing as they could grab a few hours of sleep before the activity would begin. They found another good place to camp, but did not make a fire this time.

After a few hours of sleep, they got up and got ready. Within a few minutes, they heard some distant howls. It was also possible that sasquatch hunters were in the area too, looking for an experience to get one on film. They would also knock and howl, sometimes to another group of sasquatch hunters. They would go back and forth, each thinking the other was the real thing. But to experienced monster hunters, they knew this was the real thing, which was good since there would not be any inexperienced people to deal with, or watch out for. A few wood knocks echoed.

They knew some clearings were ahead of them. They decided to move to the edge of one. A large runoff river was also in front of them in the distance. A good place to catch a squatch, or hunters and hikers. Sunup was just a few hours away. Sasquatch seem to be most active in the late night hours, well after midnight. They had seen a fire earlier, and heard a few shots, and knew some hunters were near.

It was about 4am when all hell broke loose. All of a sudden, they could all hear crashing noises in front of them, between them, the river and where they saw the fire. It was a few miles away, but the noise really echoed through the woods. They were in a line, and it seemed like something else was in a line in front of them, crashing towards the river. They all realized pretty quickly what was happening. The creatures were herding deer towards the river, where the deer would most likely trip, fall, break legs, or be unable to cross. The group started running through the woods, with Amp keeping an eye on Cara. It was hard, the woods were dense, but once they got behind the creatures it was easier. The big creatures had basically bulldozed about half a dozen lines through the woods. It was staggeringly scary how quick something so big could move so effortlessly and fast through the trees.

They could even hear large trees breaking and falling. It was total chaos. They heard shots and knew the hunters were awake, probably they had figured out what was going on also. But the line of creatures kept moving, corralling their prey. Cara believed the hunters would be a part of that group… a real coup for the monsters…deer meat and human captives. Now it was a rescue mission. Pounding feet and legs from the slayers, moving as fast as they could. They ran like deer. Indigenous people move amazingly fast through woods but they were not as fast as the hairy creatures. They were almost there…

The three lost hunters were in a panic, knowing that they were trapped. They were shooting into the woods at the creatures who were just starting to emerge onto the clearing. They could not believe their eyes. Whether they believed in “Bigfoot” or not, there were some right in front of them. Cara and her team were almost on them. Since the creatures made so much noise and were intent on the hunt, they only thought they had the surprised and terrified hunters to deal with. But Cara and her people were not scared or unprepared. They were the elite hunters of monsters and they knew exactly what they were doing.

Out of the forest, deer ran ahead of the creatures. They were darting and collapsing, completely exhausted. Some ran into the river and were swept downstream. Some ran along the river and were lucky to get away. The hunters saw the deer, and the slayers, and started retreating to the river. It was rushing too fast and the water was near freezing, but they had no choice. They got as close to the edge as possible, scrambling to avoid being killed by the deer.

Amp fired first with everyone following him. A rain of gunfire hit the creatures. Crazed, they turn to fight the slayers. Amp, Cara and the others hit them with dozens of rounds, quick as lightning. A few well aimed headshots from Mack and Josh brought down two of them. Part of the reason Cara brought them along, they were expert marksmen. A split second later they killed two more. Four more to deal with. Cara bought another down with her rifle.

Now they were closer to the creatures, and they were all wounded and bleeding. But unless you had a good headshot, it took a lot of large caliber bullets to kill one. And wounded animals are always more dangerous. So they had four very mad monsters to deal with. They kept shooting until the monsters were very close. Okay Amp thought, a little hand to hand combat. He brought out the biggest hunting knife he had and went at the one closest to him. It towered over him by at least 2 feet. But he was quicker, and good with any blade. He cut to the left as the creature's massive arms came down, moved quickly behind him, and sliced at the monster’s tendons. They were tough but he did enough damage to cripple the creature and it fell to its knees. He cut its throat. Beheading a squatch was not as easy as a demon, the neck was much thicker. He would get its head later.

Mack and Josh were battling 2 of the monsters. Josh pulled out his largest caliber pistol, but the creature,, sweeping its arm, knocked it out of his hand. Its eyes were blazing red. It roared at Josh, throwing back its massive head. He drew a knife, but boom! From behind him one of the hunters had taken aim with his rifle.. The monster's head exploded… hit just right, nothing left but a blood squirting stump. It crashed to the ground. Josh had to dive to keep the thousand pound beast from crushing him. He quickly jumped up to help Mack. Mack was hand to hand with the other creature, slashing at it. Josh surprised it from behind, knifing it in the small of the back. The blade dug into the kidneys, a mortal wound. Mack slashed at the guts, spilling them. The creature howled and screamed in pain. It fell near its companion, near death. The guys cut its throat as it lay incapacitated, thick dark blood soaking the ground.

Cara was with the last one, as nimble and quick as a ninja. In a second Amp had joined her, and Cara had drawn her pistol. She aimed for the head, hitting it square in the forehead. Amazingly it was still moving, and she shot several more times. A few missed, it was spinning with the head wound. Amp jumped on it from behind, and drew his knife across its neck. Cara gutted it, thrusting in the blade then twisting it and pulling it out. The type of knife that disembowels.

The hunters were running towards them. Everyone was breathing hard. The battle was over, dead monsters and blood everywhere. They would have to burn them. And get out of there quickly, as more of them could be around. She noticed they were female and male. A family group. She took some photos of them for research later.

The hunters were in shock but glad to be alive. They said that the deer were breathing so hard they were literally out of breath, and their breath was raspy. Cara figured the monsters had herded them over several miles of thick forest terrain. A planned and coordinated hunt. But the creatures had not been out of breath, their stamina was amazing. Running two legged they had run almost as fast as the deer and it hardly affected them. Cara wasn’t too surprised, she knew how powerful they were, but it did not bode well for the future. Nevertheless, they had brought down a half dozen of the massive creatures. It took many rounds of ammo. In the future, they would need a bigger team. But Cara did not know that in the future, the numbers would increase so much they would need an army.
