Mystery

Blair was standing on the middle of a decorations aisle in a busy supermarket. It was saturday so understandably overcrowded at the store. she was smelling different varieties of scented candles. Blair absolutely loved scented candles and enjoyed whiffing them for hours until she found the right one or to be exact the right ones for she was huge hoarder of them and it was almost becoming an addiction. Blair had scented candles everywhere in her apartment on the windowsills, on the shelfs,on the tables ,kitchen counters and still the cupboards were overflowing with scented candles!! well, to be honest her dwelling smelt like an odd combination of many aromas like a kitchen with many different dishes get cooked in it, all the smells would make a sensitive person puke but Blair didn't seem to care, she adored the calming and lovely scents all these candles produced. But just now Blair wasn't paying any attention to the delightful scents before her and one particular near her nose. Amongst the cacophonous noises of the babies crying, and kids running about and laughing and people talking, Blair's mind was wandering, not quite wandering but fixated on one memory; a moment in time. Back to that horrible night when she had murdered a man. It was an accident.

"Taylor!", said a husky, male voice quite loudly and very happily. Blair abruptly turned her head round, to see a man with slicked back, black hair, wearing a crisp white shirt but that face!! the same face she could recognize anywhere. Blair turned to stone. she could think only one thing: HE IS ALIVE!!!! but why was he smiling at her? did he remember who she was?

but just then a girl about her age, wearing a long, floral, light purple dress pushed a trolley past her with a mountain of grocery in it. she also exclaimed joyously,"Jacob!"

Then they both engaged in a friendly banter. But poor Blair was completely dumbfounded and stared forlornly, horrified out of her mind. but to these entities didn't event acknowledged her existence and moved on as she blinked at their backs.

Blair felt like she was in a dream. she's having that awful flashback again. it's a rainy, cold November night returning from a late night shift, she was wearing her favorite green turtleneck with a black blazer, it's near midnight and she's alone on that road. she's thinking about that horror movie she watched last night and now she's terrified of the dark and out of anxiety pushed on the accelerator. Oh god! she ran over a man crossing the road, the thin, pale face with a unusually pointy chin and black hair howling as her sky blue,Volkswagen ran over him. Blair recalls her trembling hands as she reversed out of sheer panic probably crushed his leg in the process and steered the car away. that night Blair literally ran for her life.

For next four months Blair didn't knew a moment of peace, she was absolutely sure she had killed that man for he haunted her day and night, she regretted intensely and was quite frantically angry at her herself for running away instead of helping, why did she let her cowardice get the best of her. She listened to local new anxiously for any mention of a dead body found on the road she was speeding at that night but no such news came. Though, Blair was quite convinced she had killed him, she was a murderer. That poor man probably dragged his injured body to some farm nearby and at the crack of dawn breathed his last and then some old farmer found him and buried him without bothering to inform the authorities. Blair didn't breathed this to a soul and this terrible secret was eating her from inside. she didn't practically had a family except a frail, grandmother who raised her since she was an orphaned two year old but her "Grammy" lived in Californian ranch faraway from Boston where Blair lived alone and worked in a fashion magazine. Fair to say Blair's grandmother didn't saw any change in her beloved granddaughter for she always put up a cheerful front whenever talking to her "Grammy".

Blair's closest friends advised her to seek therapy, believing quite naively that she was depressed.

Now, Blair shook her herself up from her hallucination, hurriedly putting away the candle she was holding all along and walked quickly in a dazed manner to find that man who looked positively like a johnny Depp knock off and that hipster Taylor. Blair scrambled through crowds and yes here they were looking at mugs on the kitchen utensil section. she didn't exactly knew what she was planning to do but without really thinking she went off and stood an aisle away but quite near to easily listen to any conversation they had between them. she took a shining, steel pan and stared at it and pricked up her ears to get some information. Any kind of information about this man, favorably about how is he alive.

The conversation she heard went on like this;

"so,I don't have one mug at my house", said the black-haired man.

"how did that happen"? asked the hipster Taylor, amused.

"I broke all of them",grinned the black haired man.

"you were always so clumsy. forever breaking things, getting into accidents", laughed the hipster Taylor, a merry, reminiscent laugh. Here Blair's heartbeat got fast.

"yeah i even got my leg crushed",laughed back the man sarcastically

"by the way, I forgot to ask how is your leg"? said Taylor suddenly serious and sympathetic.

"I was glad you didn't ask, I am tired of this question but as it's you who is asking, it's much better, almost healed, got of that confounded crutch last week.

Blair could see that Taylor nodding with a kind smile but she had enough. In a befuddlement she put way that pan, scurried through the swarming crowds and how she made out of that supermarket she didn't clearly remember. Just that it was drizzling when she got out and she signed for a taxi and a cab stopped promptly in front of her. she told her address in a bleak voice that didn't sound like her own and looked back at the supermarket with empty eyes as the raindrops pattered away and the cab window became foggy. Knowing that man was alive had removed a boulder off her chest, she could finally breath, she just prayed earnestly to never see that man again. A feeling of ecstasy mingled with relief and delight was bubbling up inside her but still Blair couldn't realize all she saw and heard had really happened or it was just her vivid imagination. So, she went back to her aromatic home and wrote about it in her journal and called it a 'hazy epiphany'.

The story has nice twists and turns but the flow has to be worked a bit more on to make it really fast-paced as a suspense like this should be. Great work!

Nice! I will say, though, some of these sentences run on a bit. Next time maybe try to shorten a few? I especially love the title!
