I always hated ice. Not the playing in the snow and making earth angels kind of hate. It was more that my molars weren't much enthused by cold drinks and ice-cream. I also seemed to have an unnatural affliction to brain freeze.
I told my sister Terry once, "If I am gonna fuxkin die in the apocalypse, it would probably be from ice and brain freeze". She laughed and threw her plushy dog pillow at my head.
Who knew that the end of the world would have had me facing one of my greatest fears. Well, this is how it all began. It was also on exactly the same day my boyfriend William came back from college down East and the same week I missed my period.
William was my boyfriend since grade school. First kiss, first bump, first quarrel. He wasn't the caring, considerate, preppy boyfriend type though. We all lived in this small town called "Lamblit" and everyone knew everyone's mama and auntie. That meant William's mama knew he was gonna take my virginity before I did.
So William was shy, weird and reserved but brilliant in the head. Thats what my dad said and thats why he was cool when William stuck his 9inch dick inside my holyness when I turned 16. Small town people and small town problems.
So it was strange to everybody the day when William turned up in the bright red Porsche that afternoon. He looked different when he jumped out of the posh sports car and jumped unto my late great grandma's porch that Tuesday. His skin was paler than usual and he now had this kind of lean to his walk.
We just thought it was some new city style and William was finally growing up. I didnt know what it was that made me know something was wrong that day. It could have been that cough that William seemed to have been ignoring or the way his hazel brown eyes now almost appear blue.
I remembered the clock on our old mantle had turned 3:30pm and William was on our porch with my dad laughing, coughing and making jokes. He was neither hungry, thirsty nor tired and seemed to have been wired up. Even that was unusual because Will was an old town country boy and loved his stomach just as much as his books.
I found his body language more odd by the minute and asked my dad to excuse him. I grabbed his hand and took him upstairs to my bedroom, shoving him inside before slamming my door.
"Ok, what is going with you. Where did you get that car Will, are you sick?" I whispered forcefully at him. William just stared silently and blinked without saying a word. His nose then began running a strange blue liquid.
I jumped back and motioned to him to look at his nose. He snapped around and grabbed the mirror at my bedside. Blue liquid started to run from his nose and unto his hands as his eyes got bluer and bluer by the second. Scared, I recoiled ready to shout for my parents just metres away downstairs.
William rushed towards me and covered my mouth, blue liquid seeping accidentally from his hands and into my lips. It wasn't a strange liquid but the color made it seem that way. The taste was just the same though and I recognized it quickly. It felt and tasted like cold blood.
I tried to scream when the knowledge reached my brain but William's hand muffled the noise. He looked at me pleading with a finger raised to his lips. I stopped short, eyes still wide as William's skin seemed to have gotten paler in that last minute.
"William you're sick, what is happening. Please tell me!" I shouted silently at him, his hands lowering from my lips. He looked around at me and sat slowly down unto my bed. His blue eyes shining through glassy tears.
"I don't know what happened Emily, some people came to school and offered me a position at this big company in the city. I thought it was my big chance. They gave me the car and I now live in the subs Ems. I did the company medical yesterday before coming down, it must be a bad reaction " he said, shrugging his shoulders.
I looked at the man my father always jeered me was the smartest boy in Lamblit and hissed my teeth loudly. " Reaction? Will your fuxkin nose is bleeding blue and your skin feels like ice paper meng". William just stared at me blindly and coughed.
This time when he coughed he kept going until I thought he was about to choke. The coughs continued until blue blood started to spurt out of his mouth and nostrils. I screamed and cried out for my parents. Moments later the banging on the door made me realize that I had locked it. I quickly flew towards the key and turned the lock.
As my parents rushed into the room, a loud crash behind me swiveled our attention towards my bedroom window. William had jumped through the window and somehow landed unscathed down below on our front lawn. We ran to the window in time to see the white almost bluish skinned human running towards the forest.
The being made a last look towards the house. It was then that I saw Williams dead skin and frozen blue eyes peer back mournfully at me. My boyfriend had turned into a fuxkin zombie.
Lamblit went into lockdown after that. The news kept reporting on missing people in and outside the cities and within just an hour, there was an unexpected panic. Folks were seen trying to pile whatever belongings they had into cars and motor homes. There was a mile long traffic leading out of Lamblit and the noisey barks from search dogs took over the early evening serenity entirely.
William never showed up since then and my parents were eagerly trying to comprehend the last hour of events. The red Porsche was still outside almost mocking our distress with its shiny lacquer. My mother was busy on the phone trying to call neighbors and extended family. My dad just sat there listening to the radio while making notes.
"What are you doing Dad, we have to get out of here?" I tried to signal to him. He only looked at me blindly and continued to write inside the little green notebook he had. I backed away slowly thinking that my father was somehow in a state of shock. It was not until my mother got off the phone that I remembered something.
"Green, my dad's eyes are green right ma?" I looked around the house and then towards the porch once more. My mother walks over to me confused before stating the obvious. "What do you mean Emily, of course your father's eyes..", before my mother could answer, we hear loud snarling sounds from the porch.
I hold my mother's arm tightly trying to assure her. We both walk slowly and slilently towards the window looking out to the porch to try to see my dad. Moments later, a pale ravenous figure darts in front the window growling. The man's eyes were ice blue and his skin chalk white. His once brown and grey hair now shone black against the pale dead skin. The creature began eating away at the meshing of the window before a howl in the distance grabs his attention.
The man darts from the window, down the lawn and into the forest. We stand and watch hopelessly as my zombie father scamper away and into the bushes.
