After a long week in court, Miriam and the rest of the women in her office decided to go on a hiking trip in the countryside. They had booked a small cottage on Airbnb and hoped that they wouldn’t get murdered by someone in the woods right next to the cottage. It also mentioned in the ad that the owner had a cat and would like them to feed it and give it attention from time to time. Miriam didn’t mind at all, of course, being a huge fans of cats herself. Unfotunately, the building that she lives in doesn’t allow cats so she was extremely excited to spend the weekend with a cat.
A lot of the women decided to cancel and have a spa weekend in the city instead, eaving Miriam alone with the cottage. She didn’t mind, however, as she did find most of the people in her office annoying anyway. She had to go out and buy wellies specifically for this weekend. Being someone who lives in the centre of London, she doesn’t see much use for them on any other occasion. They were neon green and she had painted neon pink and black leopard prints on it to make them unique.
When she got into the small cottage she put the cookie dough, that she got from the Tesco down the road, in the oven. She wanted the house to smell like cookies in the hopes of impressing the neighbours. She had a hike booked for 9am tomorrow so she planned on having a early night so she wasn’t exhausted the following day. She pulled out a book and went to sit on the couch when she heard the doorbell ring. Groaning, she trudged to the door. Opening it, she was greeted with the most beautiful woman she had ever laid eyes on. Her pale skin was decorated with a sparkly pink blush, her forest green eyes contrasted against her pale pink eyeshadow, her bubblegum pink lip-gloss glistening in the sunlight. She presented a bright smile, the kind that made her eyes crinkle and her nose scrunch up.
“Oh, hi, sorry. I was looking for Mrs Fisher.” The woman blushed, gripping onto a basket of freshly baked bread.
“Oh, no, she’s not in, I’m afraid. I’m Miriam, I’m renting the cottage for the weekend.” She rambled, nervously, taken aback by the girl’s smile.
“Oh, well I just came by to give her some bread that I’ve baked. Seeing as she’s not in, perhaps you would like to share it with me?” The girl offered, presenting the basket, a heavenly smell omitting from it. As if she has lost the ability to speak, Miriam nodded furiously and stepped out of the way to let the girl in. She led her to the kitchen where she laid out some plates and they ate in silence for a while. About 10 minutes go by when the silence was broken by the girl’s soft giggles.
“I’m sorry. I just realised I haven’t given you my name. I’m Rosie.” Rosie extended her hand for Miriam to shake.
“So, Rosie, what do you do for a living?”
“I own a florists. I just love flowers. What about you?”
“I’m a defence lawyer in a big law firm.” Rosie couldn’t help but scrunch her nose up upon hearing this. At first, Miriam thought that she was disgusted by her choice of career but then she heard a small sneeze and a gentle giggle follow.
“Sorry, hayfever.” She apologised, brightly and Miriam had realised that she was completely infatuated by the way she spoke. Her voice was soft and gentle yet it was also warm and bright. She always spoke with a warm smile on her face and fidgeted with her fingers while she spoke. They spent about an hour, just talking about this and that in the hopes of getting to know each other.
“I’m going for a hike tomorrow and I have a spare space booked if you wanted to go.” That was a lie, she actually had 5 spare spaces booked. Rosie’s bright smile grew wider as she grinned sheepishly.
“I would love to.” With that, they both said goodnight, knowing they’d both have to be up early. Miriam, however, was unable to sleep, the excitement of being able to spend another day with Rosie causing her to giggle like a schoolgirl throughout the night.
Miriam’s alarm went off at 6:15am and she woke immediately. She threw on her hiking gear and her walking boots and ran out the door to Rosie’s house. She knocked loudly, not knowing if she was awake or not yet. She was greeted with a sleepy looking girl, also dressed in hiking gear and pastel pink walking boots that looked like they had been hand painted. One of the first things that Miriam had noticed is that Rosie also looked completely stunning without makeup as she did with it. Miriam couldn’t help but feel a little bit ashamed to be presented with such beauty.
“Ready to go then?” Rosie asked, shaking Miriam from her thoughts. Rosie still sounded a little bit sleepy and she thought it was absolutely adorable.
They were halfway through the hike when rain started to fall. Miriam hated the rain, having had experiences of being caught in it on the way to work and having to look unprofessional all day. Rosie, however, loved it, she loved the way that the water glistened on the plants in the sun, she loved the way that summer rain smelled, she loved the way it tasted, she loved the feeling of wet grass on her toes. As she was explaining this, Miriam did something she wouldn’t normally do with someone she hardly knew; she leant forward and gently placed her lips on the other’s soft lips. She tasted like strawberry jam and Miriam had found her new favourite flavour. She pulled away gently to take in a breath, keeping their foreheads connected as they both breathed the same air. Miriam wasn’t one to believe in romantic moments like this but ask her now and she’ll tell you she’s converted.
They finished the hike like normal people. It was like they had known each other for most of their lives, when, in reality, they had only met 2 days ago. When they got back, it was time for Miriam to pack and move back into city to continue her regular life. She didn’t bother to unpack, knowing that she’s only have to leave in a few days anyway. Rosie, being the good girlfriend that she is, was piling plates of various baked-goods into the her girlfriend’s arms.
“We should do this again some time.” Miriam suggested, a flirtatious smile gracing her lips.
“Perhaps, you can stay at my place though, instead of wasting money and staying next door.” Rosie giggled as she helped Miriam place her bags in the Uber. They swapped numbers, took a few selfies to be used as lock screens and shared a long hug. Miriam bend down to initiate a kiss when the moment was rudely interrupted by the Uber driver’s loud car horn, signalling that he was ready to go and getting impatient. Miriam didn’t know what she was expecting from this weekend, but it certainly wasn’t a girlfriend. Not that she minded, at all, however.

Millie, Great descriptions, lots of info...odd that the group would still pay their shot. Also, you made a big deal about the cat being at the cottage and needing care. Then you never mentioned it when Miriam arrived. Question about title...really did not seem to provide insight into the piece.
