   A Gift Of Time

  By Lee Kendrick

Shortly after his friend Albert Dawkins's funeral, astrophysicist Jason Goddard received an unusual gift from Albert, delivered by Royal Mail. It took two postmen to carry it. His eyes lit up when he opened the packaging!

He had always been interested in the pyramid structure. It was always a talking point when he visited his friend in Inverness, Scotland. Whenever he questioned Albert about this strange contraption he always looked coy and was secretive about it.

“Jason, there will be a time when I will explain exactly what the structure is; for now, just be patient with me, please!” He pleaded.

That was the last time Jason saw him some three months ago before he passed away in hospital with a short illness.

With the strange object came a letter, it read:

 Date: July, 24th 1966

“Dear Jason, when you read this letter and get this contraption I will have passed on. I know how much you were interested in this machine, and finally, I will tell you exactly what it is and get you out of your mental torment! However, before I do I want you to promise that you will not speak of this to anyone, even loved ones!”

“I am leaving this to you in my Will Because no one else but you will understand what its purpose is, especially as you have a degree in Quantum physics.

Back when I was a professor of astrophysics at Dundee University, and you were one of my students, I knew all those years ago that one day I would pass this… what I call…down to you to carry on this important research!”

“I wish you all the best and that you have as much enjoyment with it as I did for the past fifteen years!” And yes, truly, I do believe we continue living after this earthly life in another realm!” Hope to see you there!

Best wishes

And excited for you

Your dear friend,

Professor Albert Dawkins

To make it easier for him to carry Jason dismantled the pyramid into four sections and took each part upstairs to his bedroom. After connecting it back together, he stood back and marvelled at it, remembering when the professor first showed it to him some ten years ago.

Now, it was his property, and he was excited and anxious to see just what it could do!

He decided tonight he would test it!

After checking over the professor's manual he had finally discovered exactly what the professor's machine could do. Flabbergasted, he couldn't believe the professor had succeeded in making a machine that thousands of scientists had failed to do. He was now ready to try it out for himself. Reading the last steps of the manual he found there were three important things he had to do first while in the pyramid:

First, he closed the aluminium door and switched on the white light. He then placed on headphones and began to put the three steps into practice: Number 1 was already done because he hadn't eaten for a few hours.

Number 1: Avoid eating anything for at least a couple of hours.

Number 2: Lying down on a makeshift bed with a cover and pillow he began to do a few minutes of breathing to relax his body and mind.

Number 3: Visualise where he wanted to go.

Having done all three criteria and deep in visualisation after ten minutes the white light now turned to blue. Suddenly, Jason could hear a vibrational sound and soon began to feel vibrations running up and down his spine. In a flash, he felt himself lift out of his body, and in seconds, he had travelled to the place he had visualised.

He had travelled back to his parent's home in Edinburgh when he was a boy of Ten.

It was a time when he and his sister, aged 8, were sitting on the settee watching a “Watch-with-Mother" episode on the black and white TV. This brought back fond memories he had had with his sister. They were the only two children their Mammy had had. At the time Dad was at work as a tram driver in the city of Edinburgh.

“ Come on Jason and Mary, time for lunch, up the table now with yer!” She said placing cutlery on the table.

As soon as Jason heard his Mammy's voice he felt emotional, as a sad, tingling sensation zoomed through him. Even though he had left his body back in his home in Inverness. Seeing his Mammy come into the front room and place two plates of sausages, mash and peas down on the table for him and his sister made him feel as though he was crying, even though he couldn't feel any tears run down his cheeks.

Jason couldn't control himself and shouted out:

“Mammy! Mammy! It's me, Jason. Can't you see or hear me?” he pleaded.

Strange for a moment she seemed to look over where he was hovering near the ceiling by the TV.

“Did you hear that sound, kids?” She asked.

“What sound Mammy?” Mary asked.

“It was like an electric voice as if someone spoke!” She said looking all around the front room.

“Mammy, we never heard anything!” Jason said as he bit into a sausage, covered in tomato sauce.

“Ooh! It's nothing, kids, I'm just imagining it,” It’s probably because I'm a wee bit tired!” She said.

Jason willed himself to move around the room, reminiscing his life and what it was like as a boy. He felt sad that both his parents had passed away a few years ago; and his sister, two years younger than him, was now 24 years old and living in York, in Northern England.

Suddenly Jason felt a tugging sensation pulling at his navel. Seconds later he felt a spinning sensation and came back to his room! He checked his watch, and what seemed like only a few minutes to him when out of his body, an hour or so had passed!

With his eyes now open he started to process just what he had experienced.

It was fantastic, the feeling of freedom was exhilarating. The Professor had made a machine that meets the participant halfway as he relaxes, visualizing; he had discovered a frequency that vibrates the body to shake out consciousness into its astral counterpart. There, one can use it as a vehicle to travel anywhere at will, or almost anywhere! He decided then and there that after lots of research, he would let the world know all about it!

Jason was so invigorated he couldn't wait to try the procedure again –he was spoilt for choice. But because of his commitments for the day, he decided to use the machine again at the weekend. Later he phoned his sister, Mary, to arrange to visit her the next day.

It would be some six months ago since he had last seen his sister, Mary being so busy with his research working at Dundee University.

Mary welcomed Jason with a kiss on his cheek.

“Hello, Mary,” said Jason, returning the kiss.

“Where's John and the kids?” He asked.

“Oh, John is working doing electrical maintenance at the local hospital. And Lucy and David are still at school.”

As they both sat down in the front room Jason began reminiscing:

“ Mary, I doubt if you'd remember this it was such a long time ago! Do you recall when we were bairns having our lunch just after watching “Watch -With -Mother!” one day when … “ He said. Then Mary cut in:

“ Oh my god! Don't say it; I think I know what you are going to say, Jason!” She said excitedly.

“ I remember Mammy saying something odd about what she could hear - like an electronic voice in the living room. She looked spooked about it!”

“Aye, aye that's exactly what I was going to ask you!” Said Jason looking surprised.

“Why do ya ask?” Mary responded.

“Well, Mary It all came flooding back to me as I sat on the train travelling here. I just wondered if I had imagined it all! I'm so glad you do remember it!” He said …feeling a little guilty that he couldn't tell her his real motive for asking her, that he'd had an “OBE” (Out of body experience). At the same time, he felt overjoyed that there was real proof that he'd had an astral projection, but with a difference… he had also time-travelled to the past! He had read books about people having experienced astral projections but never incidences of travelling back in time!

Back at home after he had visited his sister, Jason read more of the professor's manual to learn more about the pyramid and the professor's travelling experiences. Then he came across something remarkable, the professor had had an amazing experience while out on his travels he described what he had experienced:

“ As I slipped from my body, It was very noticeable. The vibration I normally felt throughout my body was different. It was like from driving a Mini Cooper to suddenly being in a Formula 1 car. The power within me had revved up, maybe tenfold or more!” Before starting up my machine and placing on my headphones, I had set up the frequency five times higher than before to test what would occur.

I had planned my route for the trip to the year 2000, in London. As I opened my eyes there was something different. Usually, I would look down at my body as I hovered above it, and to my shock and surprise, I felt myself still in my physical body. Now I don't mind telling you I was petrified! I realised that with astral projection, at some point, I would return to my physical body, but how was I able to do it now if I had no body to go to?

Anyway, whilst I was in London in the year 2000, I thought, I may as well enjoy myself and do some sightseeing!

The first thing I noticed that was different about this London than back in the 1960s was the double-decker red buses were larger and more stream-lined with electric doors; Next, the people were wearing different clothes; noticeably, most people didn't wear hats., as they do in the 60s. Then what I thought was fantastic was everyone seemed to be speaking into a small box-like object…they all had their own personal telephone called- a mobile which they kept in their pockets or bags.

After what seemed like hours I began to feel drained. Now I was worrying how I would get back home. Suddenly I caught sight of my hands becoming transparent. I decided to hide myself in one of those red telephone boxes, in case someone saw me dematerialising. I felt myself ready to pass out when the Next thing I knew I awoke back in my room in the pyramid.

What I discovered most importantly was that setting the frequency from 10 or above on the dial and visualising where you desire to travel to will take you to the future, the opposite that being under 10 will take you to the ppast. But not only that.. instead of projecting out of your body you actually teleport in your physical body to any given destination!

I have also discovered there is a limit to how long you can Time Travel for. I had neglected to Set the time dial for anything from 1 hour to 24 hours. Because I didn't specify the hour, I became drained of energy much quicker; otherwise, my energy would have stayed up, right until the time I would've set it for. And I would have arrived back into the pyramid with plenty of energy!”

After reading about the professor's London time trip, Jason felt excited at what potential the pyramid had. And started planning another OBE or a timeslip.

The following day Jason prepared a special experimental trip to see if he could use the device in a helpful way. He got into the pyramid and set a time, date and location of a major accident he had found out about that occurred on that day. Then he set the frequency to a 9 for a past time slip.

Jason hoped to Visualise and lock onto the specific accident/disaster and go straight to the target.

In just minutes of visualising, Jason felt a strong vibration run through his spine. The next thing, he reached the target destination, exactly where the accident occurred today, two hours later at 5p.m. on September 3rd, 1963. He had worked it out the day before there was a major pile-up on the M 1 English motorway. The accident was caused by a landslide after heavy rain; some large boulders had rolled down onto the motorway, hitting a lorry and causing dozens of cars behind to smash into each other. Killing a dozen people and injuring many others. Jason thought to himself if somehow he could disrupt things someway, maybe, just maybe, he could prevent the accident from occurring.

Looking at the exact spot he could see some heavy boulders, some fifty feet on top of a hill next to the motorway. As he thought about what he could do, heavy rain fell, soaking him as he was just wearing a light jacket. He hadn't counted on the weather. Racking his brain for what he could do, he suddenly spotted a yellow road-works vehicle. Seeing There was no one about he got into the vehicle and prised open the key ignition panel to get to the wiring. Bringing the wires together he was able to start the engine. He drove it and parked it in the lay-by so the boulders would hit the vehicle and hopefully stop them from smashing into the road and missing the lorry, thus preventing the pile up. As an added precaution Jason let all the tyres down and pulled out the wiring. Hoping it would delay things enough to block the road, and act as a barrier when the boulders fall!

With just an hour to go, Jason stood under a tree and waited with bated breath.

The road was getting busier as the time reached 4.45p.m. At 5 p.m. It was then that Jason observed a large brown lorry heading up the road. The rain was now torrential. He kept an eye on the to see any movement there was no movement yet. A sudden squeaking sound, prompted him to stare up.The larger of the two boulders, some ten -feet in diameter, was gradually slipping, then began to roll down with the smaller boulder, at maybe six feet in diameter, slowly following behind it. There was then a deafening sound as both boulders came hurtling at speed towards the road. Jason's heart raced as both boulders collided with…

The yellow roadworks lorry toppling it over just as the brown lorry passed by and dozens of cars drove safely behind it. Jason gave a big sigh of relief and felt ecstatic– a feeling of power came over him as he had saved all those lives, preventing the motorway pile up! He felt he had done his job and so closed his eyes to travel back home. An electrical sensation surrounded his body as dematerialised and teleported back to his home in Scotland in his own time.

When he arrived back home in the pyramid he quickly checked the newspapers to see if the news of the motorway accident was still in the newspaper. He felt a great relief when he couldn't find any sign of the accident in all the papers. From now on Jason made up his mind then and there that preventing accidents and disasters would be his mission in life!

Now in his 60s, Jason had saved many thousands of lives using the time machine. He continues saving people regularly!

One day, while Jason was on his laptop, something caught his attention on YouTube; a YouTuber was talking about "The Mandela Effect"

Hundreds of people were commenting that they were sure they had seen news reports about an accident reported on the TV and in newspapers of a motorway pileup, killing many people and injuring others on the motorway in England, back on September 3rd 1963. Yet when they enquired about this to the TV news stations and newspapers they catagorically denied any such event ever took place!

Known as the Mandela effect:

The Mandela Effect is a phenomenon

Where many people have misremembered a fact, event, etc. It was thought that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. Yet he was released in 1990!

However, Jason knows what really happened! And to this day he still wonders if he did the right thing tampering with time to save lives!

Howdy from the Critique Circle! Neat story you've got here, Lee. I enjoyed your creative take on the traditional time machine, and I was unfamiliar with the Mandela Effect --- the tie-in here was compelling and fun. As for my suggestions, you are very reliant on exclamation points. Though I understand that you use them for emphasis, allow your lines to stand on their own and trust your reader to understand their importance. I would also suggest diving into a few more of the sensory details of your narrator's experience. We had a few del...
