Fiction

Although Mr.Watson was in his early thirties, the recent events had put years on him. He barely slept last night, he was highly concerned about the theft cases occurring in the town. People had started talking behind his back, how he was long in the tooth for a mayor.

It seemed like yesterday when he was elected as a mayor by these people 4 years ago, they all were very exuberant. Ms.White his secretary, a highly ambitious woman in her late twenties, assured him that everything was going to be fine, but he knew otherwise.

It was 4 in the evening and he was going through the bulky files of complaints on his table. With every file, he could feel how terrible the situation was. Knock knock.

"Come in", he answered tiredly.

"Mr. Watson, sorry to interrupt you but Mr. Richardson is here to see you," said Ms.White with her usual smile.

Mr. Watson sighed and nodded at her. She smiled and went outside, a moment later Mr. Richardson came in. He was a young and cunning man, most likely to be the new mayor. He came in with a mysterious smile and sat down on the leather couch.

"Good Lord, mayor you don't like too well," he paused, " But can't blame it on you, eh? The situation right now everyone is talking about you and not in a pleasant way if you ask me."

"I think my dear Richard I am aware of the current situation very well, thank you for your concern but we are doing all we can do" And heaven knew it was true, the old man was doing all in his power but it seemed as if the good Lord was not on his side.

"Hmm...I see, yes yes yes I can clearly see" He said smirking and looking around the office."You see I care about this town just as much as you do but sitting in your office is not going to help you or the people. People are getting angrier by the moment, they want their goods back, they think you are too old to be in this position any longer, they want young blood to take over, a leader who can really solve their problems."

"And who might that young blood be?"

"Well, it is not my decision, I am just a spokesman but truth to be said, everyone thinks that I shall be the new mayor. But don't worry I'll make sure that people don't turn against you, I respect you and will be honored to be your successor."

Mr.Watson smiled knowingly and said, "Well, you don't have to worry when your time will come you will be the mayor but for now I am your mayor and I don't intend to leave anytime soon. Now if you must, I have a lot of important things to do."

Mr.Richardson didn't utter a single word, he just nodded stiffly at him and walked straight out of the office. Just as he left Ms.White came in from the look on her face mayor knew that she heard everything.

"Sir, I think you should consider his offer. We know that the situation is out of our hands, there is nothing that we can do to stop these thefts. I think you should retire while people still respect you and think of you as a nobleman." She tried to persuade him.

"My dear Ms. White, let me tell you something over the course of my life I have come to realize one thing that nothing can defeat you as long as you have complete and strong faith in yourself, and I am a man of very firm faith dear. I am not going down without a fight, I am doing everything in my power to stop this riot and I will stop at nothing." Mr. Wastson replied in a firm tone. She looked at him, smiled warmly, and walked out.

Sitting in his office alone Henry Watson realized that how lonely it was at the top, then slightly shaking his head he went back to study the files.

The next morning, he woke up with a loud voice coming through his window. Rubbing his eyes, Mr. Watson frowned when he saw the time it was four in the morning. He walked towards the just at the moment Mr. Black, the sheriff, came barging in his room.

" Mr. Watson you are under-arrest for the recent robberies in the town. We have found your torch and watch at the place of crime, you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be held against you in the court of law."The sheriff said as the policemen put the mayor in handcuffs. Mr. Watson was baffled by the sudden situation before he could say anything they took him out of the house.

"thief"

"liar"

"You were supposed to protect us, not rob us."

"Punish him."

People were yelling at him, throwing pebbles at him. He had no idea how his belongings got at the scene of the crime. He looked around frantically, he pleaded through his eyes that he is innocent but no one looked at him as their hero now. The eyes that once held love and respect for him were now full of hate and anger. In the huge crowd, he saw two familiar faces smiling at him. Mr.Richardson and Ms. White. He froze at his spot, he was pulled out of his thoughts when someone threw a stone at him. The sheriff took him toward his vehicle and pushed him inside.

Young Andrews looked at his father, Adam, the cobbler, and said, "Father why are they throwing stones at the mayor? Isn't he a good man?"

Adam sighed sadly, looked at his son, and replied, "He is a good man, son, but it ain't a good world."

Moral:

Being a member of this materialistic world we should know the fact that this world is for those who serve them after a man stop serving this world he is of no use.
