Kids

He was chasing me. He thought it was a funny game, but to me it wasn’t. I thought it would be a fun game like when I played with mommy. I miss my mommy. We used to play fun games all the time, like when we would hide from the big scary monster who would stomp through the hallways and smell really bad. Sometimes my mommy would run to the monster to protect me from him. He made my mommy sad, she cried all the time and whenever we played the hide and seek game, parts of her skin would be purple or green-which was pretty cool. I didn’t know skin could be a different color! She was gone now I think. I don’t know where she went but I saw as the monster made her cry and change the color of her skin. I don’t think I want my skin to be purple or green anymore because it looks like it hurts a whole lot. When the monster left, I went to my mommy and she wasn’t moving. I think she was just taking a nap with her eyes open. I once saw a girl on the monster's bed who was taking a nap with her eyes open. She had a needle in her arm- I don’t like needles, they are very sharp. But after I went to check on mommy, the monster came back, he had a bat in his hand. So I ran out the back door and into the forest. My mommy had warned me about the forest, it was super big and creepy and I could get lost in it but I don’t think that it is scarier than the monster with a bat. I kept running and the trees and bushes were scratching my arms and I was getting tired. I think I will go rest by a tree for a minute. Then I heard his voice.

“I know you are out there kid and I will find you so you might as well come out now.” I whimpered. His voice was really loud.

“I am sorry, if you come out we can bake cookies and we can watch a movie with your mom, just like old times. What do you say buddy?” I didn’t respond, we couldn’t watch a movie now, mommy was sleeping and it was rude to wake someone up-I learned that the hard way.

“LISTEN YOU LITTLE SHIT, I AM GONNA TEAR DOWN THIS FOREST TRYING TO FIND YOU!” I got scared and I ran. I think e saw me because he got in front of me, then he lunged for my neck.

He ran away, that little shit ran away. He never listens, even when he watched as I beat his mother into submission. That woman was useless, my brother had warned me that she was just a gold-digging bitch. I should have listened especially when I found her in bed with him. She just seemed empty while he seemed fulfilled. I had resented her for it since, even when she begged me to not hurt her for her insolence; for cheating on. “It was out of my control!” she would cry to me. “He hurt me-forced me!” She was lying, of course because that’s all women ever do. She was just like my mother, a lying, heartless, tramp and that’s all she would ever be. That little kid was the only thing left of her because no matter what she did, I still loved her. Even after she cooked me trash meals, told me to stop drinking, and protected her son over me. I had brought other women into my home because she couldn’t satisfy my needs and a man has needs. And because I love her so much I couldn’t have a part of her still with me, I needed her gone. I needed her to leave me so that I could find some peace with myself. He would have been gone if he hadn’t run out the open back door. Mary, my beautiful wife, still finding ways to screw me over and protect her kid over me. As I followed him deeper and deeper into the woods with my trusty baseball bat in hand, I lost his trail. I knew that he was still around though because I could hear his pathetic whimpering.

“I know you are out there kid and I will find you so you might as well come out now.” Maybe if I played the nice guy he would come out and I could get this over with as quick as possible.

“I am sorry, if you come out we can bake cookies and we can watch a movie with your mom, just like old times. What do you say buddy?” Three minutes passed-no response.

“LISTEN YOU LITTLE SHIT, I AM GONNA TEAR DOWN THIS FOREST TRYING TO FIND YOU!” I heard a gasp and saw a flash neon green. Gotcha. I gripped my baseball bat harder and lunged for his neck.

I closed my eyes and braced for impact. I felt nothing. I opened my eyes and saw him-the monster I had been hiding from for years with his eyes open, glassy eyed and his head near ripped off. There were tears in his clothes and his leg was missing. I wonder how he would walk with one leg and why isn’t he moving? Is it because he lost a lot of the red stuff on the ground? Then I heard a voice behind me. “He can not hurt you anymore my pretty.” I turned around and was greeted with a super scary sight. It was a man with hooves but his butt was a pony and he was tall. His face was covered with the same color of red stuff on the ground.

“H-Hi,” I whispered shyly.

“Hello my lovely, aren’t you precious. Where is your mommy?”

“My mommy is sleeping with her eyes open! She must be very tired because she hasn’t woken up yet.” The man frowned.

“I see, well then, would you like to come with me until your mommy wakes up?” I nodded my head. I don’t think mommy will mind very much because she was always worrying about me.

“What is your name, child?”

“The monster called me boy, but my mommy called me her sunshine,”

“The monster?” he questioned. I pointed to him. “Ahh I see,”

“Well from now on your name shall be Servos,” I was super happy, I had a cool name.

“What is your name?” I whispered.

“My name is Bernhard and I think we will be the best of friends,” he whispered to me as he took my hand, leading me away from everything I had ever known.

The Critique Circle brought me here :) Such a heartbreaking and compelling story. The narrative, coming from a child, was powerful and riveting. The POV from the abusive father made it more interesting. Great read!
