"Um Princess Liane?" I heard behind me. I turned around and it was a young girl in a beautiful ball room dress.
"Oh hello little one. Are you the princess herself?! You look beautiful." I squated down to be eye level with the little girl.
"I love your dress too!" She squealed.
"Hello I'm Liane's mother. Liane is a really big fan of your book and the movie. A factor is the princess has the same name as her." The little girl's mother said.
"Is that so?" I said to the little girl who nodded happily. "How would you like a free signed copy of the book and for the premiere of the play, The Adventures of Princess Liane: The Lost Cave how about you sit in the front row." I said.
"Really?!" The girl said excited. I got up and walked behind my table and sat down. I grabbed a book and wrote down on the inside, 'To Liane, the most adventurous princess of them all, I wish you a successful journey to the never ending adventure ahead. From Princess Liane herself.' "Thank you!" She said as I handed her the book.
"Thank you very much." The mother said. "We have to go on and stay close to the door now Lia." The mother said. They walked away and I sat back down at my table. I was looking down at my phone checking emails for a brief moment.
"Do I have to pay for these books?" I heard a woman say. I was finishing up an email and put on a smile.
"No ma'am the-" I stopped mid sentence as I looked up. My mother... Standing right in front of me... A person I never thought I'd see again...
"Surprised to see me?" She said with that smile I remember. It showed up in my nightmares for years.
"Uh Lola can you watch the table for me for just a moment? I need to speak with this woman here. She's a bit lost." I said calling over my assistant.
"I could hel-"
"It's alright Lola I'm already up and she speaks another language. I got it." I said.
"Okay Mrs. Delton." My assistant said. I walked to my dressing room in the back away from people and she followed.
"Embarrassed of your mother?" She said as I locked the door.
"What are you doing here?" I said turning to her.
"I can't come and see how my daughter is doing? After all these years of not even a single phone call, or text message, or even a letter." She said. "Everytime I tried to call I had to go through an assistant and you wouldn't even take the call." She said. "Can at least get a phone call on Christmas?"
"I owe you nothing." I said. "I'm not the one that ruined everything." I said.
"How was I supposed to react when my daughter told me she wasn't going to become a Lawyer like we planned? And on top of that you told me you would never marry and have a single child." She said. "Looks like you lied about that." She said which made my blood boil.
"I told you I would never marry a man and I didn't want children of my own because I wanted to adopt. There is enough children without a warm house hold in this world." I said. "You kicked me out because of it." I said.
"I didn't think you'd stay away." She said.
"You told me I was going to hell for disobeying you and gods will. I was sixteen Josie!" I said.
"Don't be rude and call me by my first name." She said.
"You lost that respect a long time ago." I said. "And as for me marrying someone, I did marry someone, an amazing woman that didn't look down on me wanting to go to college to become a writer. And I have two kids that you'll never have the chance of meeting." I said.
"Come on Kaylee, we got off on the wrong foot." She said.
"The wrong foot? You cut both of them off before you could even take a step." I said. "Why are you here?" I said.
"I want to make amends Kaylee. I felt bad for how things ended with us. After losing your father i felt alone and I didn't know what to do." She said.
"Why are you talking like he's dead or something?! Dad is not dead! YOU pushed him away and YOU filed for the divorce after cheating on him." I said.
"How do you know about that?" She said.
"Because unlike you Josie, dad accepted everything I wanted in MY future. He's the one that paid for me to get some good editors and a publisher. And now I've built myself up." I said.
"I know that and I am so proud of you for it." She said.
"Why now?" I asked.
"What?" She said.
"Why do you want to make amends now and try to rekindle our relationship?" I asked.
"Because your my daughter and I messed up on not giving you a chance. I shouldn't have made you leave. I should've believed in your dream." She said pulling me into a hug. I almost wanted to believe her if I didn't already know why she was here.
"Funny you say that." I said pushing her away. "Dad asked me to come over two days ago and he showed me a voicemail you left him. Saying how selfish I was to cut you out of my life after getting all this money and fame. How you saw me, my wife, and my two kids on a billboard for being a rising childs book writers and you were angry because of how happy I looked. You said I shouldn't be happy knowing I'm basically ruining my life by not becoming a lawyer. Well mom, I am happy. Happier than I've ever been and its not just because of my beautifully diverse family. But because I'm making other little girl's feel like they can be themselves. Adventurous, kind, rough, and can love who they want. And all those boys and girls out there love me for it. So I don't have to have a happy life but the fact of knowing I make their lives happy makes me feel like I've got the world in my hands. I will NOT let you walk into my life judging my every move just because you want a few pretty Penny's whenever you ask." I said.
"No Kaylee I am deeply sorry for what I did all those years ago. It's been what, ten years already?" She said. "I cannot change the past but how about rebuilding a future." She said sounding desperate. Then there was a knock at the door.
"Mrs. Delton the play begins in ten. Your speech is in five. We need to get you prepped and on stage now." One of the coordinators said threw the door.
"I'm coming out now." I said. I unlocked the door and opened it. "Tell security to escort this woman off of the premises please Sebastian." I said. "I don't know the woman so do what you need without harm, I don't want a lawsuit to deal with." I said walking past him and out to the table. "Lola pack up the books and put them in my dressing room until the play is over. Meet me backstage in two so I can go over my speech really quickly." I said walking past the desk. "Can you please help my assistant with the boxes under my table please so she is not alone." I asked a few workers that were standing by the entrance door talking to the security guard that was checking to make sure everyone had their necklace on. As I walked in a little girl and boy with their mother was standing at the door looking stressed.
"Is there a problem?" I asked before walking in.
"This woman said she thought this was free to get into the play. I was told not to let anyone in if they don't have their little necklace pass with their name on it." He said.
"I'm sorry for the trouble Mrs. Kaylee." The woman said. "Come on guys maybe next time." She said.
"Wait." I said. I turned to the security guard. "They will be let in and led to an available seat. Of they are questioned you tell them that this is distant family of mine that has come to visit and if they are treated any less than the people that did pay there will be a problem. Is that clear?" I said. The security guard was silent for a second.
"Yes ma'am." He said. The family came back and the kids hugged me. Their smiles made me happy and warm. A feeling my mother will never understand.
