In the freshman year, I was just like every other girl. Obsessed with music, dancing, hair dye, and I had a pretty awesome friend group. My group wasn't exactly "popular" however. We were theatre kids, also known as, "the dorks of the school". We didn't let it bother us, and we continued doing what we loved. During the year, my friends moved away to prep schools or different towns, leaving just me.

Being alone in school frightened me, but at least I had other friends. Not as close as my original friend group, but they'd do for company. The big Spring Fling was coming in the the following weeks, and I decided to go with my new group. Unfortunately, all of them already had dates, and I'd be the odd one out. I didn't think finding a date would be so hard, but almost no guy wants a girl who's 5'0, skinny, with purple hair. I felt like a weirdo. I began asking some of my girl friends if they knew of any single guys that I could possibly ask. All of my friends were model gorgeous, and it was no surprise that they all had dates.

Gigi, the brown-haired model of the group, told me that a boy named Evan would love to go with me. He was the captain of the football and lacrosse team. Alana, Zoe and Kylie all snickered when she mentioned his name. She reassured me that he was the nicest boy, with the biggest heart. Gigi was a real friend. She said she was going to try everything in her power to get his number for me. In the following week, Gigi came running up to me at lunch and handed me a piece of paper with Evan's name and number. The other girls rolled their eyes and sneered in our direction. Gigi told me that they were just jealous that she was helping me and not them get with Evan.

That night, I nervously called Evan, my voice trembling with every word. I told him that I really wanted to go to the dance, and that my friend group all had dates, but if he didn't want to go with me, it was alright. He was one of the most popular boys in our grade, and I was basically a nobody. He asked me to tell him a little bit about myself, like what my dreams were, my fears, my likes and dislikes, my friends and what I saw in a guy like him. I told him the honest truth for every question. I wanted to be a leading lady on Broadway when I was older, I was afraid of spiders and snakes, I liked ice cream and the color purple, I disliked roses, and I told him that I hung out with Gigi, Alana, Zoe and Kylie.

I finally told him the truth about me calling. I didn't know a lot about him, and I had only seen him in the halls a few times. I told him I was looking for a date to go with so I wouldn't be alone all night, and Gigi gave your number to me. I heard him slyly over the phone mumble, "damn Gigi", and continue on to say "sure, I'll go with you, as friends though and not anything else". I was pretty happy, thanked him and hung up. I immediately called Gigi and told her the good news. She asked me if I would like to get ready for the dance at her house with all the girls, and added them to the call. I told them the good news about me going with Evan, and the girls all muted themselves for a minute, leaving me and Gigi suspicious.

"We'd love to get ready for the dance with you girls, but Alana, Zoe and I have plans with our dates already. We're sorry" Kylie said quickly, and the three girls hung up the phone.

"Hey, don't worry about them. You, Evan, Luke and I are going to have a great time. Ask Evan if he would like to come get ready with us" Gigi reassured me. We hung up the phones and I was going to invite Evan. Luke was Gig's date, and he was a star basketball player, who got along with Evan. I dialed his number and it went straight to voicemail, so I shot him a text.

"Hey, just wondering if you wanted to come to Gigi's before the dance to get ready with us. Luke will be there too! Let me know;)". I click sent and waited patiently until I heard the ding a few minutes later.

"Hi, sorry, but I have plans with my dad before the dance. I'll meet you there." It upset me a little bit, but I thought about the fun Gigi, Luke and I would have on Friday night.

The big night came and I arrived at Gigi's for pizza, hair, makeup and pictures. Luke's mom drove us to the dance, and it was nothing but laughs and jokes the whole way there. When we arrived, I stepped out of the car with my 4 inch heels that Gigi let me borrow, and almost tripped up the stairs into the building. I was wearing a silver cocktail dress that I bought at some fancy consignment shop with my mom, and Gigi was in a full length ball gown. She was stunning. I prayed Evan liked what I was wearing. Alana, Zoe and Kylie were at the door waiting for us. Or should I say, waiting for Gigi. They really didn't want anything to do with me.

I finally felt a tap on the shoulder, and it was Evan, in a sport jacket and buttoned down blue shirt, holding a corsage.

"May I?" He asked politely, and with a nod of my head, he slipped the red rose corsage onto my wrist. It was funny, on that facetime call a few weeks back, I had told him that I hated roses. Maybe he forgot, and roses also symbolize romance, so maybe it was just a sweet gesture. We liked arms and walked in the dance, but he immediately left me for a group of girls and boys. He probably just wanted to say hi, but the group was odd. It was Alana, Zoe and Kylie with their dates. Why was he talking with girls that didn't per say... like me? I forgot about it and hung out with Gigi and Luke for awhile, until Evan came back over and grabbed me by the shoulders and started giggling and dancing with me. I had chills and a tingly feeling on my neck because I was so nervous. I had never danced with a boy before. It was only then that I regretted this decision very, very bad.

"Lexi, there's a spider on your shoulder!" Gigi screamed and backed away. How did a spider get there? I suddenly realized that the tingly sensation was a hairy, big spider crawling on my neck. I was flinging my body from side to side, trying to get it off when suddenly it flew off and landed near my feet. Evan came back near me and picked it up, cupped it in his hands, and held it close to my face.

"Why are you so scared Lexi? Huh? It's just a little spider!" And I heard the girls laugh. Gigi was stunned and in compete and utter shock. Luke and her had no idea Evan was going to pull one of his pranks, but the others did. That's why they didn't hang with us at Gigi's house. They were setting this up with Evan all night. To embarrass me in front of the whole school. My hair was ruined, I cried my makeup off, the rose corsage didn't have any pets left on it due to me shaking the spider off my body. I ran out of there as fast as I could, and walked home in the rain.

Gigi and Luke called me that night, and apologized for even giving me Evan's number. I told her it was not her fault at all, but I wouldn't be going back to that school, and I was going to be moving to one of the prep schools where my best friends had moved to. Gigi and Luke both agreed to move with me, and to disconnect from the toxic friend group they were in. And that's the story of my horror Freshman Spring Fling, and to this day, I'm still friends with Gigi and Luke. Alana, Zoe, Kylie and Evan however, got expelled from the school for the prank they pulled on me, and weren't accepted to any prep school in our area. Thank God.
