“What are you listening to?”
“Bruno Mars.”
“Yeah, I like Bruno Mars too, but what’s your favorite type of music?”
“My absolute favorite is seventies music.”
“Classic Rock?”
“Yes. But I really love disco.”
“Disco?! Seriously?”
“Yeah. Don’t make fun of me. It has excitement and exhilaration.”
“I can say the same thing about classic rock. There’s nothing like it.”
“Yeah, but you can’t dance to rock music. It has movement and power.”
“You can play any instrument you want, and you don’t have to know how to play.”
“I don’t get that.”
“But how can you like disco and rock. Which do you listen to?”
“Depends on the kind of mood I am in.”
“Pick one.”
“But I like them both. I also like eighties and some nineties music.”
“That’s a wide range. Who’s your favorite?”
“There are so many favorites. But open your mind wider, you’ll see there’s so many great tunes. You’d be surprised on who you may like.”
“I like eighties and nineties, but rock, not pop.”
“Ok, listen to this.”
“Are we going to play name that tune now?”
“Just listen. Give it a chance.”
“Ok.”
“Wait. Close your eyes and feel the music. Doesn’t it make you happy…want to get up and move?”
“Play it again. Who is that? I haven’t heard it before.”
“GQ Disco Nights.”
“Ok, I see what you’re saying.”
“So, you like the song?”
“I’m not sure. But I like you.”
“Uh, ok. Well, what have you got on your playlist?”
“Ok, well, let’s see. Ok, what’s the name of this song?”
“Teenage Wasteland. The Who.”
“You’re half right. It’s The Who, but that’s not the name of the song.”
“Is this a trick?”
“Give up?”
“Yes.”
“The name of this song is Baba O’Riley.”
“Really? I never knew that.”
“See what you can learn when you broaden your horizons?”
“Funny. So, what apps do you use to download your music?
“I only use two or three apps for downloads so I could make a playlist on my mp3 player, but what I really like are…don’t laugh…but I still like cd’s. I have lots them.”
“I won’t laugh. I am the same way. I use apps sometimes, but I like cd’s also.”
“There’s nothing like the cd.”
“Yeah, with the apps there are so many commercials and if you pay it becomes too expensive.”
“Yeah. I like buying collections of songs on CDs. For instance, a collection of a hundred songs from the seventies or eighties or rock. That way I get more for my money.”
“Great idea. I get greatest hits cd’s, but I like your idea.”
“I have a karaoke machine and I enjoy drinking a beer, playing my music, and singing my heart out.”
“Oh, you sing? Are you any good?”
“I practice.”
“Oh, sooo that’s a no.”
“No. It means, I practice, and I am getting better…improving. I sing ok, with the songs, the songs on my voice level ya know. You should hear me…I may surprise you.”
“Ha-ha. Nice save.”
“Don’t laugh. It’s true. I have an ear for music.”
“But not a voice.”
“Oh. I don’t want to be famous or anything. I really enjoy singing to my music with my karaoke and I want to feel good, that’s all.”
“So, does that mean you’re going to sing for me now?”
“If you want to hear me, I can only sing with the music and a beer or two.”
“Are you asking me on a date?”
“A date? What? No. I’m just…”
“Cause it sounds like you were asking me out on a date.”
“Call it what you want. I’m saying we can continue this conversation over a beer and karaoke.”
“What bar has karaoke now?”
“Oh, no, I don’t sing in front of people. I was talking about moving this conversation to my house. We can stop for beer, order pizza, and play any music we want and sing our ass’s off.”
“Uhm.”
“Ok, sounds like fun.”
“By the way, my name is Leena.”
“Hi Leena. I’m Evan.”
“Hi Evan. Oh, this is my stop, come on. Let’s go.”
“Ok, ok, I’m with you.”
“Let’s go this way, there’s a store down the street near my house. We can get beer and snacks.”
“Hey, nice neighborhood.”
“Thanks. I moved here seven months ago. I did a lot of research about where I wanted to live, and Garden Hills has so much to offer.”
“So, I guess you’ll be hanging around for a while.”
“Yes, that’s the plan. Here’s the store. We can get the snacks and beer, and we can order pizza when we get to my house.”
“Ok. Chips. Salsa. Pretzels.”
“Great, and don’t forget the cheese dip.”
“Got it.”
“Ok. Now for the beer. How’s Miller?”
“That’s what I drink too…the champagne of beers. We have much in common.”
“Yeah. I feel like we’ve known each other way before today.”
“I’ll drink to that.”
“Ok, well. Let’s pay for these and head to your house and blast some music.”
“Sounds good. Wanna split the bill?”
“Sure thing.”
“My house is just a couple blocks ahead.”
“Wow. Nice house.”
“Thanks. The family before me took great care of it. I love everything about it.”
“So, you really are a famous singer?”
“Haha. Although that would be a lot of fun, no, I’m not a famous singer.”
“So, what do you do for a living?”
“I’m a surgical nurse. I was thinking of going to med school. I love the medical profession and really want to help people feel better. What about you?”
“That’s awesome. Well, I’m a writer. I have three books out, working on my forth and hoping that someone will notice me. I write articles for money because I like to eat and pay my bills.”
“Wow. That’s great. I’ve never met a writer before.”
“Maybe I can write a book about you one day.”
“What genre do you write?”
“I love crime fiction and general fiction. I love making up situations, creating characters, and I can lose myself while I am writing a novel.”
“That’s really cool. We both have things we love doing.”
“Where’s your music studio?”
“Haha. It’s right through here.”
“Wow. Cool room. I like the way you decorated it with various music themes. ZZ Top, Led Zepplin signs. License plates. Phillies banner. Oh cool. I really love your big old microphone. Like they used to use back in the day.”
“Look at this. My disco ball and my personalized karaoke lighted sign. These are my favorite.”
“I love it. All you need is a small bar in the corner.”
“Haha”
“Open two beers.”
“Ok, pizza ordered.”
“So fast.”
“Yeah, I ordered it online. That way I can track when the order comes. I usually just tell them to leave it on the steps.”
“How do you work this thing.”
“Here. Like this. Then I play videos and keep it muted. It’s fun watching the old videos from years ago.”
“Yeah, haha. How different TV looks compared to today. Good thing your neighbors aren’t too close to you.”
“Yeah, don’t I know it. I can play as loud as I want to.”
“Ok, let’s hear it.”
“Ok. Do you know Mack the Knife?”
“No.”
“Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly whites…..”
“Haha. That’s great. You do sound pretty good.”
“Ok, your turn. Pick your poison.”
“Uhmm.. Ok, Steppenwolf, Born to Be Wild.”
“Haha. Really?! Ok. Here you go.”
“Get your motor runnin’
Head out on the highway
Lookin’ for adventure……..
Born to Be Wild!”
“Haha. That’s so funny! I really love your air guitar at the end. Ok, Mr. Motor Rider. Park your motorcycle over there and go get the pizza by the front door. Please.”
“Hey, this pizza is great. Great…like you.”
“Hmm. Yeah, it’s the best pizza around here.”
“I’m glad I saw you on the train this morning.”
“I’m glad I wore my headphones.”
“Me too.”
“Want to do this again? Say, tomorrow?”
“I would love it Mr. Motor Rider. We have a lot more songs to sing to.”
