I love everything about Thanksgiving meals. There's always so much food. It makes me feel like I'm a queen back in the year 1924 with a long table full of extravagant food on top of a clean white table cloth. That's what I always imagine, anyway.
In my case, I go to my older sister's house an hour away from mine. She is 8 years older than me at the age of 23. Her house has lots of unused rooms for our family to stay in. My mom, dad, and my twin brother go there every year.
My brother Tyler thinks he is so much better than everyone else, always trying to prove me wrong. He and I are always trying to get each other in trouble. He can be so annoying, but I guess I love him a little nonetheless. He can be useful to clean the toilets when mom and dad ask and I really don't feel like it.
It's finally Thanksgiving and my family and I are going to leave the house in one hour. I still haven't packed anything yet. We're only staying for 1 night, so it shouldn't take too long
I went to my room and packed the necessities: a toothbrush, a few outfits, a water bottle, and a few other things to entertain me during the car ride. I packed everything in a backpack that I found in the back of my closet.
"Nellie!" yelled my parents. "Time to go!"
Finally, it was time to go. I couldn't wait to see my sister. The last time I saw her was a few months ago on my mom's birthday. We went to have dinner at Ravera's. My mom spilled her soup on Tyler and we all laughed so hard to the point where it was hard to breathe. It was a really fun night for everyone unless you were Tyler.
As I was about to get in the back of the car, Tyler ran ahead of me and jumped in the back. For car rides, we always want the back so we can lay down and get comfy. "Tyler! Why do you have to be so annoying? Why can't you just let me ride in the back?!" I scolded.
"Snooze you lose, sis," he replied.
I groaned and tried to get comfy for the hour ride. I pulled out my book and began to read, telling myself to stay awake. Last time I fell asleep in the car, I woke up to Tyler slapping my cheek and yelling at me to wake up. I did not want that to happen this time. Despite my protests, sleep overrode my senses and I entered a dream.
"...llie! Nellie! Nellie! Nellie! Nellie!" Tyler said as he slapped the side of my face. He continued this motion until I answered him.
"What!?" I said with rage as I pushed his hand away and turned the other way.
"We're here," he replied. Seriously, all of that to say we're here. I'll get him back one of these days.
I sat up and realized my neck was stiff from my position. I rubbed it as I gathered my stuff and began my way inside to my sister's house. "Livie!" I yelled as soon as I saw her. I dropped my stuff on the ground and ran to give her a big hug.
"Hey, Nellie!" she exclaimed as she hugged me tighter. "Teddy just got back from picking up the turkey from the store." Ted is Olivia's husband. He is the playful kind of brother-in-law. "He's about to prep it," Olivia said in a whisper. We both quietly giggled at the hilarious sight of him getting all grossed out by the turkey's insides.
At that moment Ted walked in. "What are you two laughing about?"
"Nothing!" we both said in sync. We started laughing even harder at how our tone even sounded the same.
"You guys are messed up," Ted said as he left the room.
It was another hour before the feast was placed on the table. Eventually, we all found our places to dine. We all went in a circle saying what we were thankful for before we ate. Not long after, it was time to eat. I quickly grabbed the turkey leg before anybody else could. It was my favorite part of the meal, aside from the mashed potatoes.
I was about to take the first bite when a bullet came through the window above my head. "Ahh!" I screamed.
"Everybody under the table!" Ted yelled quickly.
"What's goi..."
"Shh," my mom was cut off by Tom.
I could hear the door forcefully swing open from a kick, I presumed. Fear overwhelmed my body. Who could possibly be here? And why would they come in like that? My face must have shown the tension I felt because Olivia looked at me with a sweet smile and whispered, "We're going to be fine." How could she possibly say that? Somebody just intruded in on her house for crying out loud!
"Do as I do," Ted said with authority. He slowly crawled to the side of the wall 5 feet away. He quickly placed his hand on the wall with his fingers spread out. Part of the wall was replaced with a hole. He crawled through and motioned for everybody to do the same. Olivia followed behind everybody, continuously looking around her. As she crawled in, the wall returned back to its original place.
Ted then stood up, quickly ran to a door, and opened it. On the other side was a long tunnel, and as we ran far enough into it, there were different routes to take. Ted seemed to know exactly where he was going. Olivia stayed in the back for some mysterious reason.
After we ran for what felt like hours, we found a door without a doorknob and a white rectangle on the right. Ted placed his hand on the rectangle and a green light surrounded the door as it opened. Where did all of this technology come from? I wondered.
"All of your questions will be answered soon," Olivia said calmly.
The room we walked into was very fancy. In one area was a TV surrounded by white leather couches and chairs. Tom led us to this area and motioned for us to sit. As we did so, he began the explanation.
"It all began when we were at work. Random people approached us and explained to us that we possessed the talent required to save the world. He asked us to come work for PWE; Prevent World Extinction. We agreed because of our desire to help this earth, and he began training us. We learned to fight like our life depended on it because, with this job, it was a possible outcome. We also learned the ways the organization has tried to help and the ways they are planning to help.
"We've been on many missions, and have made many enemies. That's who our intruders were. They just were people ordered to come to eliminate Livie and me for revenge."
"So how are you going to prevent them from finding you again?" Tyler asked with concern.
"We're going to have to move again," Olivia replied.
"Well, that explains why you never like to talk about your job and why you guys have decided to move so much," I concluded.
"That would be the reason," my dad replied, speaking for the first time since the intrusion.
Just then, some fancy man with a black suit advanced in our direction and said, "How would you like to be a family of secret spies?"
"Yes!" My family all yelled excitedly at the same time.
It was from that day that my life truly changed forever, for I was now a true superhero, but more precisely, a spy.
